.

Here is what I feel would work find the closest person with a coon pen and see if you can work a deal for a week and just let the dog live in there. It is amazing what that setup will do for a dog that won't hunt.
anyone with a pen will say don't let it live in there. I agree but way too much to type details on how long in and how long out. The guy with the pen will know

I wont waste time one one who doesn't have the desire to go hunting by itself, not to mention one who is shy.

So if I am getting this right, this dog has only treed 3 or 4 coons in her life???? If that is correct she may get it in gear after a few more.
Is she always hunted with the same dog or dogs that she wont go with??? Because if she is, maybe one or both of them are mean.
As to the subject of shyness...a little bit can be good and even desirable because that could prevent some one with bad intentions from getting their hands on her. Too much is bad. When you say "real timid" if it's to the point that she cowers around and don't want to come to you I would give it up. She is to old to be acting that way for you to think it will go away.
Maybe we are splitting hairs here..."real timid" could be what I call "soft" which is just a dog that really responds to correction, cant stand to be hollered at and absolutely hates to get shocked, even on low. "Real shy" is a dog that would just as soon run up under your truck, pi$$ down both legs and shake all over as it would to come to you for a treat. If that's the case I think you are better off with something else.

Dog will not hunt out

I had one I did a couple of things he did not go alone or with other dogs I hunted him alone in the early morning had to walk him would hit a track and run it and if he treed I would get to him quick gave him lots of TLC it was not about treeing another coon . He was afraid of the dark for sure , he kept improving ,still not great. Another mistake I made with him was I gave him to much freedom when we went hunting, like when we went hunting ,did not lead him to what and where I wanted him to go or do . I took all his freedom away,he was a pain, he made me a patient coon hunter. I had no choice my granddaughter loved this dog, so at 77 I learned . He turned 2 in April and is hunting good alone and with other dogs , will split and tree and tree till I get to him , very accurate , no junk, World beater no ,patience my friend and good luck to you.

Quirky, timid, shy etc comes from old blood in fox hounds, old timers would breed them that way so they couldn't be stolen. It hasn't been tillk the past 50 years that people started believing that all dogs should like to be petted.

It does not effect there hunt at all, ever try to pet a coyote?

If your dog has only treed one or two caged coon. It does not know yet what its job is. Hunt the dog by itself in the thickest coon you can find. Do that for 30 nights then reevaluate the dogs progress. All pups have good and bad nights, over time they have more and more good nights. It just like anything. You don't learn to play a guitar over night, neither do coondogs, its takes hours and hours and hours of practice.

If your looking for at best a dog that an just tree coon than you can keep working !! If your looking for one that rates in the top percentile coon dawgs than cut your losses and move on !!! They are born with hunt and desire either they have it or they don't and if they don't save yourself a lot of time and aggravation!!!!

At this time she's the only thing I got too work with , I'll have a littler of pups from a different female in July. So for now I'll keep working with her. What's a little more wasted time lol

i aint no trainer but if thats all i had to hunt and time dont matter i would hunt her every night if i could.i would bond with that dog so the dog will trust you more and when she trust you she will be braver.hunt her so much where she will feel more at home in the woods then in the dog house.i would walk her up and down creeks were theres a good chance she can strike one hot and if she was to tree i would get to her as fast as i could and let her know thats what you want her to do.good luck with her.

There's allot of truth to that. When I was a kid I always wanted to give the dog a quick pet if it walked by me. My grandfather would wack me in the back of the head (playfully) and tell me don't touch the dog boy "you'll ruin him" and when he picked a pup he always wanted the shiest pup in the litter.
I don't think it was actually so much that he worried about it getting stollen as he just didn't want the dog wanting attention, he just wanted the dog focused on hunting. IMO

wont hunt

Try roading the dog ahead of a four wheeler in the afternoons or in the morning , let it run what ever it sees , best way to start a young dog on anything , walking is fine too if you are in good shape..

Their hunt??? What about my hunt???? If the dog is so shy it wont come to me when it's time to go home and cannot be trained to do so then it is no good to me.
I know you believe you can train out all the problems of the dog world, and that is a good thing...I would way rather sell one of my puppies to a guy like you {if I was a breeder} at least I know they would get as best a shot at it as they could get.
Thankfully, there are not very many severely shy dogs out there...but I have seen a handful in my time that just would not be changed. I would very much like to have the time I wasted on them back to use on a better prospect.

Possum treeing pup

I have a 15 month old well bred gyp that I started at 12 months. She doesnt care about a caged coon . She will go hunting out up to around 400 yards on her own . Trouble is she trees possum nearly every turn out! Coon are thin here but they are here. She's gotten where she trees pretty hard and I didn't want to shock her or switch her at the tree and take a chance on messing up her treeing. She isn't shy but she isn't a dog that you can whip the crap out of and send her charging back out to hunt.Id appreciate any ideas how to turn her attention to coon. Thx. GC

That type dog is kinda the personality of the dog I have. They are people dogs. They listen. They aren't shy but they are sensitive. You are right by not shocking her. Find a couple good natured coondogs to hunt with and see if she will get to treeing coons with them. Once she LOVES treeing coons and shes treed plenty, then you can start working on the possum treeing but STILL take it easy on the dog and understand how severe you got to be to get her attention and teach her. I defentily don't recommend the shock collar.

if youve had her since she was 4 months old and shes 2 now and still not hunting,i believe i would be hunting another dog.

Posted by Fisher13 on 05-12-2015 08:42 AM:

4 to 6 times a month is not near enough in my book, when I start a pup, I try to hunt them 1hr a night 4 to 6 times a week but that just me, for 2 to 3 months straight. That being said, I would expect her to be begin ranging once she knows what her job is, is capable of treeing coon. Her desire to tree coon, should begin to take over, and she forgets about being afraid in the woods. Over time they will check in less and less. Very few go like the dickens right from the gecko.
There are a lot of dogs out there that lack hunt but do have a lot of competition. They will hunt hard in a cast, but won't hunt alone. There are others that are the opposite, they hunt there best alone, but put in a cast won't want to hunt. Then there are lazy dogs, ones that just lack drive period. With out spending time with the dog it's impossible for any of us to tell what's going on. Only you can determine, what the issue is.
