Can "Petting" affect "Performance"?

Ever since my 1st beagle (as a kid) I was told "not" to make pets outta my "hunting" dogs.So I don't and never did.I handle them as pups so they are not skiddish.I give them a "pat" on the head when they do good and that's about it.Do you think that daily petting,scratching, and "loving on" young hunting dogs "can" affect their performance in the field or woods?Do you mind "other people" in your young dogs pen petting on them frequently? I'm curious to hear what YOU were taught and (or) think about this.Thanks!

pet them pups.There are 7 kids that live around me and they handle my pups regularly,They take my grown dogs for walks on the dirt road.It really can make a dog handle well.
It doesn't affect the hunting ability in my dogs at all.

You cant pet/praise a young dog enough when it does a good job,I find they will hunt and tree that much harder the next time out

This is something i feel very strongly about. There is a difference in a dog hunting for itself and a dog hunting for you. I have owned both types. A dog is not a machine like many coonhunters believe they are. They are a living breathing thing. My old female bluetick (princess) hunted for me. Once a dog stops hunting for themselves, and they start hunting for you, they improve tremendously. And I dont mean due to kicking, beating, and shocking. I mean cause they want to !! PET THEM !

to much peting takes out hunt, but petting a dog after it does a go job is ok ,but to much of it can hurt , just some of what I have seen over the yrs of trainning , everybody is different, and so are dogs

I have had several of the "One Man" types messin with Bragg blood... They need to be your buddy or your spinning your wheels trying to work em...

Yeah, I competition hunt !! All Fall and Winter long.. My Blues compete with the local coon.. My Blues win a ton !!! We use and recommend MOONSHINER LIGHTS, Peggs , Ok.

I don't believe making pets of them hurts hunting ability one bit. What it DOES do is practically eliminate the culling process. When you make a pet of them, especially a family pet, and it turns out to be a dud or not the hunting dog you are looking for, you have purty much saddled yourself with a dud. Of course not every coonhunter is serious about culling and that is fine but if you are looking for winners or one of those top notch coondogs, you better be prepared to go through a few getting there and making pets of them will really screwup your chances of getting there simply because you or the family can't move on.

i voted yes but let me explain my answer.petting your dog will greatly improve its performance,simple facts a dog that loves you is going to work harder for you.

I believe the comment of not petting the hunting dog is directed towards strangers, the hunting dog doesnt need to be petted by just "anyone" that will make them easier to steal! But if its your dog then yes pet away they will perform alot better for you, but especially when they are puppies I wouldnt allow others to pet or handle them.

Petting without a balance of discipline is bad , humans have way more brains than dogs and spoiled kids can't even overcome that kind of raising very often ... a dumb dog don't have a chance.

Petting and bonding is good , but some dogs take advantage of it ... as long as they fear you at least a little more than love you then they will still work hard ...

The 2 I have now have slept in my bed with me their whole lives.... I really wish i could do something to take a little hunt and drive out of them sometimes after walking a couple if miles when the coons aren't moving.... To answer you're post, that is a very incorrect oldschool way of thinking. My "house" dogs hunt as hard, deep, and long as any other dogs.

I dont want my dogs petted by other people, in the kennel i pet them when I feed them I always play with them when they are pups but never in the woods unless it is after they have done what they are there to do. treeing me a coon. I belive there is a time and a place for it. I also will not let them play with other dogs when they are pups. (yard dogs)

Strangle Hold slept in many motels with me and was a family pet. She is one of the hardest hunting hounds I ever been to the woods with. One of the best hounds in this area. I just sold her and prolly will regret it. Everything I own is a pet. I have absolutely no problem winning my share.

I pet all my dogs a lot. I don't do it to make them better nor do I worry if it will hurt them. I pet them because I like dogs and dogs like getting pet. (if they don't, they won't stay here!)

There are times I will not pet certain dogs. Some dogs can be too enthusiastic about certain things and as a trainer you have to recognize that and do what it takes to tone those things down, whether by not petting them or by outright disciplining them.

i have always petted my dogs never have had any truble with them going hunting i dont want mine to scared of me but they know if thier doing something wrong they will be corrected i just starting a 8 mon old beagle she dont stay under my feet but if she does come back i pay her no atteion just move on she will go back in the brush with the old dog i want my dogs to know that im the boss and i treat you really good but dont mess up you gonna get a good whoppin or a shot of eletric jmo
