talking up dogs?

Would you think more of a stud dog or a bloodline if the owner or breeder of the dog was promoting it in the hunts and as a stud or if someone else that doesn't the dog or if it was someone that hunted with the dog was talking it up?
I have looked into a few bloodlines and I certainly will look closer at a stud dog or a certain bloodline if it isn't the owner promoting it and talking about how great it is.

Vote your opinion!

Stud dog owners

I get a chuckle out of the stud owners that get on here and Btt their thread 4/5 times a day and you have 4/5 pages of them talking to themselves about how good their stud or pups out of him are.
Some of them get comical.

that is my point, I had a forum on here on what types of crosses have worked well with a certain bloodline, I actually took a look at the ones that people posted about other people's dogs, but when everybody and their brother started posting about their own stud dog... I didn't even bother

I will only breed my female to a male if I feel that he will compliment her qualities and is better in the areas she lacks, so I have to hunt my female with him first, I also want to hunt with pups off that male to make sure he is throwing good dogs

a reproducer doesnt have to be a coondog, a reproducer produces coondogs... IMO a dog should reproduce better then what they are in order to be called a REPRODUCER...

I'll come right out and admit it.......I'm a sucker for a stud that produces winners and the way I come to that conclusion is PKC's Pup of The Month standings, PKC Sire of the Year standings, PKC National Pup Leader standings and the UKC PRP leaders, pup, sire and dams. Since I am only interested in winners, as opposed to meat dogs or basic coon treers, it makes sense to keep track of what reproducers are putting the winners on the ground.

i agree with ya Jim as long as they are putting up plus points with all the wins. maybe i should say the majority of cast wins being plus points , haha.

I voted other, I always go hunting with a stud before breeding a female to it. There are several English studs in my general area and I have buddies that call me all the time asking what I think of this stud and that stud and I always give them my opinion, but I also reccomend that they go hunting with them to see for themselves. Remember, believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.

Other

Hunt with pups! Look for similarities from pups from different females.

Also use each and every tool available to breeders to narrow the search. Jim mentions some.

One thing I like to do is look up ads or Pups On The Way from 2-3 years ago. Call and ask the breeder how their litter turned out. You would be surprised at how frank people can be.

Oh I should have added that I have been turned off from dogs with ads that make outlandish claims.

Simple ads with a come hunt invitation and see my studs offspring go catch my eye before anything else.

Here is an example. Mr. Frank Giddings didn't make Jay the dog he was by blowing or big ads. I know what sold me: Tell, Frankie, Stone, and Tuck just to name a few.

You guys that say hunt with the dog got it wrong. Your not buying the dog your buying what he produces. Lots of great dogs never reproduced worth a tinkers dam.
Hunt with as many of the dogs affspring as possible and from as many different females as possible

An simple example would be mouth, just becaue a stud dog has a big, loud mouth doesnt mean he throws that mouth and maybe he was the only one from his litter that was loud, but if you hunt with several of his pups from different females and they all have his mouth you can be pretty sure that he throws loud pups.

I voted other. Jim hit on a few points, look to see what is throwing winners. Look to see if those winners come from females that are bred about the same. I know some studs that have thrown awesome litters with certain females and nothing from others. Hunt with offspring, look for common traits among them. The best way to judge a stud is by his offspring. See how many he has, how many are turning the crank. Go back like one guy said and call past litter owners, they will more then likely tell you the good and bad about the litter they raised. A stud dog owner/promoter will tell you the same thing. Well the honest ones will tell you " don't know how they will turn out, he has threw some nice ones here and there." The promoters will tell you " he throws early starters with huge mouths that can drive a track and real tree power. I mean blow the leaves off the tree and have a coon every time." In reality what they are saying is " if you got a female that is ready to breed and the stud fee in cash, I will let him park on top of anything, and you might get one out of ten that will even bark at a coon."

Hit the nail on the head! I could care less about what a stud does in the woods Im worried about what it throws! Ive seen several studs I wouldnt hit a hog in the @$$ for but they reproduced nice dogs..

Maybe I should restate my question, you are more willing to go look at and hunt with the stud dog if _____ is talking about it or talking it up.

Yep that tells you more than hunting with it. They all have good and bad nights. So if there isn't one local you hunt with a lot and a lot of it's pups you hunt with a lot. I think the records is the best way to tell the most.
I am sure there is a lot of good ones out there that people just don't have have the money or know how to promote and that is a shame but can't be helped.

Partly that too. I hunted Walkers for almost 40 years. If something were to wipe out my dogs of the breed I hunt now I would look at the Coonhound Bloodlines Section on Historic Reproducers and then Current Reproducers to see what followed on down and then see if I could find a bitch form that list that was recently bred to a current Stud. I play percentages. Of course monthly Full Page Glosssies advertising would also urge me on. I am a sucker for the big names too. One big recent win probably not do much for me. Then I would just hope the pup turned out to hunt more like what I like to hunt than the last ones I had.

ALWAYS hunt with a stud dog to evaluate it yourself. There are way to many Tomothy Ball marketeers these days.

Posted by Jon Millwood on 11-29-2011 12:46 AM:

Another thing to think about when picking a stud.. How many of you think most studs that get bred a lot are kept hunted up? How many of you think the stud owner would be willing to risk something happening to there dog by turning it loose, especially if theyres bitches lined up down the driveway to breed.... I know theyres a few dogs that are winning and breeding but most wont risk it..
