A "never seen that happen before" moment

Went hunting tonight and on the second drop the dogs struck quick and treed within about 250 yds of the truck. Went walking through the woods towards them, both sounded like they were on the same tree and really settled in a treeing hard. But then when I got about 70 yds out they took off from the tree straight away from me through an open field like they were shot out of a gun, barking every step. I don't think it was a coon because they've had them jump out before and the coon's always dead by the time I get there when that happens, and besides they would have easily caught even the fastest boar coon on the ground across the open field. I let them run about 300 yds and then called them off because the were going to cross a busy road.

Any ideas as to what they were running? Fox? bobcat? I've only been coon hunting for about 3-4 years now and this was a new one to me.

sounds like a bobcat, if they would have keep running and treeing and leaving as u was going into the trees u would know.

Thanks Nathan, that's kinda what I tought too, but couldn't keep going or would have taken a big risk of having a dog flattened on the highway.

I would definatley say bobcat. This sounds like an almost exact experience I had. Did you have youre light on when it suddenly took off?

Here in central ohio we aren't suppost to have those suckers but one night I took my good male and female out. Neither ever ran trash and I mean ever but I guess a bobcat puts off almost the identical scent as a coon. That's just what I've heard. I went right behind my house and cut my two dogs. They got struck quick and bam my male htrew his big locate. Started in to the tree and my female was split about 10 yards. Me and my buddy noticed a big lump in the little sapling that my male dog was on and as soon as I put my light on it BAM it jumped out and my male took off right after it. Didn't see him again for 2 days. Bad experience, I seen what I believe to be the same bobcat 5 weeks ago right own from my house. He looks to be about 25 lbs.

You can just about bet your bottom dollar it was a bobcat.

Thanks for the info guys. From what I've heard before I thought it was a bobcat, but haven't had too much experience with them as they have just started populating this area in the last 15 years or so. I've only actually seen a bobcat on 2 occassions and that's out of a lot of hours in the woods. But they are getting more plentiful. I wonder how many there have to be before the state of IL will open a season on them...HMMMM?

I have run an animal like that before. Never was able to see anything in the tree as the dogs would strike away from the tree hot before I got there each time and I'd get lucky and leash them up at a tree sooner or later. What-ever it was was going from tree to tree I thought since the dogs were not tree happy and there was nothing to be seen in the tree. I was told by some old timers it was a "Haint" ! Anyway, I never got the proof! Camera's don't capture 'haints' anyway do they?

I've always been told that it was bobcats that did this.The only thing I don't understand is how do bob cat hunters tree them with their dogs and they don't seem to do this all the time. does anyone know the answer or ideal on that? I never have been bob cat hunting so I'm not sure.

I wouldn't know either as I only have had this happen at night. I have seen this disussed before on message baords and I believe some cat hunters have said they will stay in the tree in daylight.

I've seen young dogs that weren't 100% broke yet run a deer that may have been bedded down while the dogs were treeing, but you kicked up on your way to the tree.

Sometimes deer ripping past a tree will pull them off. Could have been a bobcat too. It's hard to say without them actually treeing a 2nd time. Could really be anything?

Was there any snow on the ground?

what was it ?

I think it would be a BOB CAT but you never now i heard of them winged coons that can fly from one tree to the other and make the dogs look like they slick treeded LOL . BOBCAT for sure .

its more than likely a bobcat. i had a dog that i condidered at one time turning into a bobcat dog rather than keeping coondog. coons were 10 bucks... bobcats were 100 bucks. but i kept her coondog. she ran about 2 or 3 though. shot 1 out and whooped her with it. my cousin got it mounted. ask ladycathunter. she can tell you if she is still on the board.

its probably one of them black panthers every one is talking about in our great state..lol

Definatly a chupacabra or Nocturnal flying squirrel

nine times out of ten that was a bobcat. Once in a while late in the season a coon that has been treed alot will do that.
