-- A Human Shy Female to breed or not? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928324430)

Posted by Fisher13 on 06-20-2013 09:44 PM:

A Human Shy Female to breed or not?

I have a 7 month old pup. That seems to hold of all the qualities, that I would like in a hound. She is still a pup, and has a long way to go. However she is a natural, smart, and has a ton of drive. Independent and not afraid of the dark.

However in a non hunting atmosphere she is stranger shy. She doesn't like strangers, for about the first 5 minutes. Once the person has been around for a couple minutes she will warm right up to the person. She begin to act like herself playing and horsing around and what not. Some strangers she warms up to right away, for some reason it seems to be ones that smoke. Once she knows a person, she usually never forgets that person and will approach with them eagerness that one would expect from a puppy.

The bottom line, is I would not trust leaving her alone in the company of strange children or strange people.

Does this mean that she does not meet the ukc breeding standards?

I like her personality and feel safer having her around. I don't have to worry about an unwelcome stranger entering my home or taking her off a tree somewhere. I don't trust strangers and don't feel that a dog should either.

I am trying to decide if I want to get her spade or not.

Comments or opinions are welcome

About 2 years and 200 nights in the woods will tell ya if she is breeding material.

Ya I know, its too early in that sense, but she shows a lot of promise.

Since she is staying in the house, I'm trying to decide if I want to get her spayed or not.

I'm pretty sure she will make grntch, just like her momma, but I don't think the shyness will go away

I'm more or less trying to understand, how shy is to shy to not breed.

at this point if I liked her I wouldn't worry about it.... you still have plenty time to make that decision.... I personally like a dog shy of strangers as long as they are not shy of me

She knows all of my family, and close friends, she is not shy of any us, or my kids, because she has been introduced and knows and remembers these people.

Its only a complete stranger that she will shy around.

She is very out going and playfull around the house

how old was she when you got her? reason I ask is most dogs are not born man shy, they turn shy becaulse of some experiance.

My old female is shy. Even with family. When I was showing her. She stood like a statue. Not because I worked with her cause I didn't. Was because she was scared to death to move around strangers lol. For yrs I was the only person that could handle her off a tree. Never had to worry about anyone getting her. Best dog I've ever had. I can live with the shyness myself. I never bred her and now figure that was a mistake. Had nothing to do with the shyness though. Im just not a breeder.

i would say if she is spooky or shy i personally would not breed her. Ive seen it done before and she will throw it in her pups. Jmo.

if that were the case towards its owner I would agree but in this situation I disagree

At 7 months old if a dog is breeding material or not is the furthest thing from my mind except maybe being pretty sure she will make gr. nt champion.

I have a female hear who is shy towards people and I'm the only one who can handle her. I just had a litter of pups off her and they all are real friendly outgoing and none of them are shy at all. But time will only tell if they stay that way but me and my family handle them daily and I believe that helps make a difference.

i know in theory it sounds good but ive seen the exact same thing done with same type of female and some of the pups turned out shy and timid. A dogs temperment is one of the main things i would consider before breeding. Just one guys opinion lol￾

I have also seen shy pups out of dogs that didn't have a shy bone in their body... according to the owner I don't consider this dog shy... to me shes smart

Posted by Fisher13 on 06-21-2013 02:50 AM:

Roxy is very smart, the smartest hound I have ever owned.
I'm not sure how she will finish, But from what I understand, a dog that is shy around strangers shouldn't be bred.

Unfortunately she shows signs of having all of the other desireable traits, as far as having brains, heart, drive, independence and natural ability.

She just treed her first coon all by herself at 6 months on her second night in the woods alone and has never seen a live coon, and maybe only a half dozen drags, and very limited hunt. I had no intentions of starting her young, due to the other project I got going.

I realize, I don't know how she will finish out, but she shows all the promise in the world, and all the money in the world could not buy her.

I know she will not grow out of shyness of strangers, because I know her momma is the same way. The gentlemen, that I bought her from said her momma is the best coon dawg he has ever owned in his 15 years of hunting. He said he likes the fact that a stranger cant go up to his dog and take her in the woods. However everything I've read or have been told in the dog world, is that shy dogs shouldn't be bred, which is why I am considering getting her spayed.

I have decided to multiple times, because of her shyness, but then she will out do her self in the woods.
This is why I need more clarification now, on the shyness standard. If I am going to spay her, I would like to do it before her first heat.

I've had her from 8 weeks on, nothing has happened to her, she just don't like people she don't know. Until she becomes comfortable around them usually a couple minutes. She will normally remember the person and be friendly right away.

The vet said I def shouldn't breed her, but of course she hates the vet.

Posted by oldblueboy706 on 06-21-2013 03:14 AM:

I bred the female I have for her hunting ability, accuracy and mouth. Not her people skills. I know some would probably not have bred her for her one flaw out of the woods but its what they do in the woods that should matter. When she is in the woods u can't even tell she's shy its only when someone tries to get her out of her pen she will hide in the box unless she sees me and knows its ok.

You also have to look at how she was handled from day 1- week 8 before you got her... If she wasnt handled daily that could play a part in it... However since you said her mom was the same way I think it's definitely a trait she could pass on to her pups... As for not being able to break her shyness I disagree... IF you wanted to, from how you have described her, I feel with work and putting her in situations where she around people and gettin positive interaction from those people like treats pets on the head she could possibly be pulled out if her shyness...I've done it myself with a very timid shy dog. Now you'd never known he was like that. JMO though. Good luck with your decision!

If she ran around attacking people or something. It might be different. Way I see it. Its my dog and nobody that's not familiar with it should be touching it anyhow. I sure wouldn't spay one because of shyness. Just might be the best dog you've ever had and you might want another just like her one of these days.

My old Sassy female was shy around strangers in the kennel but acted like a different dog in the woods. Some of her pups acted the same way. One of my hunting buddies kept Sassy at his place for a couple of months and she was fine with him, a week after he brought her home she would run for the dog house when he came by like she never knew him.

I wouldn't worry about her acting this way IF she has everything she needs to have in the woods.

When the time comes and you want a pup/pups out of her breed here. It's good asking opinions on here but DON'T let these guys make your decision for you. There's probably only a handful of serious breeders on here that actually work hard to better their breed. The rest are just blow hards or guys that mean well but don't know much more than you do about breeding.

I personally like a dog that has a little "stranger danger." I prefer a dog that isn't going to just load up and go home with anyone.

Like someone else mentioned- breed for hunting ability not people skills.

Obviously if she was so skittish it was interfering with her hunting, then I would get her fixed. Doesn't sound like it is.

You can get her spayed at any time if you want to wait and see how she turns out.

some pups/dogs are shy around strangers, however as long as she isn't growling or biting anyone then I wouldn't worry about it, if she is hunting an has no problem with the woods then I would not be afraid to breed her. shyness is something that some dogs have problems with an others don't. give her some time she might grow out of it with age and experience.
