Rabbit Population (Central Ohio)

This seems like it has been an extremely good year in central ohio for rabbits!! I can't recall jumping as many rabbits every time i go gun hunting as I have this year EVER! Anyone else think so too ? If so what do you think contributes to this ??? We jumped I'll bet 20 rabbits yesterday. The dogs had 11 different jumps and We saw at least 9 "squirters" and went out today for 2 1/2 hours and jumped 6 with 3 squirters. Great running. I've been jumping them in places I used to not even fool with anymore, and having good jumps,and runs...Is it just me or my imagination or anyone else think it's been a pretty good year as well.

Hey Shawn, I think the rabbit population this year is great. Trevor and I have jump rabbits in public hunting spots where in the past have not. Having good hounds to get rabbits up and going is always a plus. Trevor and I went yesterday to a place on public hunting lands and I shot only one rabbit at the end of the day but, don't take that in the wrong way we let the hounds run rabbits all day and could of shot 10 or so. We are trying to get Candy girl and Zac in excellent shape for future hunts that will be coming up. Hey just letting you no my 12 week old pup ran her frist rabbit and did a nice job. I took her to a pine tree farm, the rabbit there are crazy in numbers. Yes Shawn, I think the number of rabbits this year have been awesome. See ya soon Jim

I agree shaun I think rabbit population is ok...but i still don't have any at the place I really wish would get good again...maybe it is my dogs though.

i live in hare country don't know anything about cottontail country but like a guy said in an earlyer post shot1 could have shot 10 thats better for the hounds and the rabbit pop. its good to kill a few infront of them but save your hunnyholes.some guys like to show still pics. of tailgates full of rabbits now days i like to watch the video of how that rabbit could have been dead

hahaha wow it's gettin deep..I'm gonna need to up upgrade to a set of chest waders now!!...lol i kinda figured thats what you were talking about Prater. It was nice when it held rabbits!! I've been out hunting everday since Saturday and been jumping rabbits at every spot i've dumped the dogs seems like the numbers are definitley up..usualy it slows down about december, january after hunting pressure has been laid on them, but I've been jumping a good bit of rabbits at every spot i turn the dogs loose on public ground...

i have video posted on here on hare, how does that compare to cottontail hunting? with good dogs on hare i don't need awsome population because i can run the same hare for 3-4 hours when scenting is great,they dont go to ground they stay up and run.how much trouble do you have with rabbits that just dont want to run?

We dont run hare in ohio, some cttontail run some hole up,theyve been running good all week, watched them jump 1 rabbit yesterday they had no idea they jumped it and acted like they couldnt smell it, they alil happy tailed but that was it, but the rest they ran hard..

where i run my dogs on cottontails it is not unusaul to cottontails that 2 to 3 hrs or more,also they cover the ground and run like a hare

ya, olinger i know you don't run hare in ohio you don't have any. the few cottontails we have here live around houses and gardens and give almost no resistance befor they hole.

Thank god there are rabbits ....i still will shoot 1 ....2 max just for the dog workin and thats all the rest are just left to be run another day !!! My bag limit is 1 or 2 after two i unload the gun ....always have.

have jumped 34 rabbits in the past 3 days, not counting today out pleasure running with a couple buddies. Yesterday and today we had chases that lasted over 2 hours. This does'nt seem very common for this time of year. The only time I get runs like that is late march early to mid April. Anybody else having the same sort of thing this past week ?

We have been jumping a bunch of rabbits! Almost all of them have been long runs. Seems like scenting has been REALLY good lately. Wet weather maybe ?

yeah, buddy of mine lives over close to delaware ohio and he said lots of places he runs has lots of sitting water and most of the holes are filled in with water, but we have hills around here lol so i'm not sure about that, but they have been jumping and running alot. I've been running 3 dogs all week, and 2 of those are now lamed up with ripped and missing pads on there feet. so I'm now down to one running dogs and 2 started pups, one of which has forgotten what a rabbit is lol.

shaun, that great!! sounds like you are having some good running...you must be running the hair of the rabbits to get sore pads on bare ground.
