These are the GRE Booster Amps and they do work. Years ago, I used it with the ICOM and it greatly increased the range of tracking. Others used them with other tracking systems to increase range.

Tracker built a Booster Amp in their Xtenna antenna for the Maxima that is similar to the GRE Booster Amps to increase range.

The GRE Booster Amps are used in the radio world.

Saw that, but $15 to ship to me. Also, doesn't look like it comes w/ the cable that the other one comes with. By the time you get it all figured out, the $73 one looks pretty good.

if you have a radio shack near you ,you might be able to cut some cost on cables/shipping,
,the one here has all the adapters,cables..
had to buy some adapers for wireless ant. and seen them,
has the same bnc connecters that my LL.electronics receiver takes..

GRE Booster and Long Range Antenaa

Has anyone tried adding a GRE booster to the Garmin Long Range antenna? I think it would be just plug and play. The telescoping part of the antenna is connected by a BNC connector so the GRE booster should connect directly to the piece you hold in your hand and then the antenna should plug in the other end of the booster.

Just wondering since I don't know enough about antenna logistics to make sure that this would not cause problems. I am not trying to steal anyone's business, but I already have the long range antenna and this Garmin system is about to nickel and dime me to death with all the "accessories" I need for it to work "properly".

Already have this booster on my QuickTrac. with 2 of the adaptors. Going to switch it to my Garmin right now.

Thanks for your confidence! Personally, I would not use it because it is cumbersome. You are not going to carry all that in the woods with you are you? We already know we should not be transmitting around our Garmins (while they are on) with marine radios, and outside of that, the preamp will not hurt the Garmin and then that wouldnt really be the preamp, it would be the marine radio!

I bet if you had a three element yagi you would get as much if not more range with it than you would this preamp and the garmin long range hand held antenna, let alone the preamp and rubber duck combination pictured!
Another upside is that the yagi really can't fail you unless you run over it with the truck or something similar, because there are no electronic components to it.
The first thing we learn as ham radio operators is that if we have a budget to get a station on the air, we must use 90% of the budget on the antenna system (not preamps), and the remainder on the radio and accessories.

I also looked into buying a Yagi Antenna. I called and spoke with a gentleman that makes the yagi antennas and he was not overly encouraging even though he would send me one for around $90. My understanding is that the Yagi would have to be specific for the Garmin as my old telemetry Yagi is "tuned" to around 219 frequency.

My question is where would the best money on an antenna be spent? Would a Yagi antenna perform better than a 48 inch, 5/8 wave MURS band magnetic mount antenna on the roof of my truck? I would think that the 48 inch tall Murs antenna would significantly out perform the smaller Garmin magnetic antennas, but how would it compare to a Yagi antenna? The MURS band antennas made for the Garmin run about $85 unless you make one from Ebay supplies for about $50. The cost of the GRE amplifier is only around $50 itself.

We do use lower sideband CB radios and I already have a Wilson magnetic antenna on my truck's roof. There is no way that I can separate the two antennas by the magic 10 foot rule some suggest to prevent burning up the Astro 220. Almost all of our radios have been "tuned" up to a higher output and some club members do run amplifiers in addition to their radios.

The best money would be spent on an arrow antenna for around $50. Google arrow antennas.If you are referring to the antenna you pm'ed me the link about, was that not a "base station" antenna not specifically suited for mobile use? I did not look that close but as I stated in the PM, I can point you to sources much cheaper and just as good as that if it was even a mobile antenna at all.
Who did you speak to about the yagi antenna? Why did he say he was not encouraged? I can promise you, if you get a yagi and learn to use it poperly, you will be completely satisfied with the range but as I have said before, if your dogs get deep and you typically hunt in places where you can drive around and get closer, a magnet mount will probably be the way to go and avoid the hassle of the yagi.
The antenna you are looking at does have a "gain factor" because it is 5/8s wave antenna as opposed to a quarter wave, so it will have some gain as well as a larger "capture area" for the signal, and there is the problem for me. I want as small a footprint as possible without sacrificing alot of performance because I do not want to be constantly whacking the antenna with limbs while I am driving. You can always remove the antenna and redeploy it when needed but the larger antenna is going to be more aggravating to do that with and the magnet is going to have to be much larger and stronger.
The cb is 27 mhz, not 156 mhz like the marine radios so there is a large difference in operating frequency there.
Let me answer your questions:
The yagi needs to be close to the freq. of the garmin. Your telemetry yagi will not work well!
The murs antenna will outperform the smaller magnet mount, in theory!
The yagi will outperform the murs antenna if used properly in theory and actuality!

What they don't tell you is that it shortens the life of your Garmin a great deal. It will slowly burn it up. Keying up a mic on a two way radio will do it to if done a lot.

Yeah I would say your right but it will save me from burning alot of gas and at $3.40 want take long to pay for a new garmin. I will just keep it in my pocket till I need it.

By what first hand knowledge do you know this? Yes, transmitting on a marine radio in close proximity to a garmin can overload the front end and damage it but by what experience are you claiming the preamp in and of itself will damage the garmin?

I don't know much about radios and such. I was reading what a tech said on another forum that did know a lot about them. He was saying his was allready getting weak and was going to quit useing his and was asking Garmin to try and do something about makeing the new ones hold up better useing them on the new models. Garmin didn't deny the problem so I took it he knew what he was talking about.
