Very confusing situation please help

im askin for any advice.

I have a 4 yr old male that im hunting for a guy in ga. i picked him up in oct of last yr to hunt for him. At first the dog didnt really click. I guess because he wasnt accustomed to the swamps yet. The more i hunted this dog the better he looked. He got to be where if he treed i would almost promise he had a coon. He was the type that if u turned him lose he was going some where to find a coon. I put a 1st 2nd and 5th on him, given him 95 points. all in 5 hunts. pretty good. specially sense the 5th was at southeastern treeing walker days. Now to the present. He has not treed a coon sense feb 28. Ive had this dog out 25 times sense then and he has treed 4 possums, 14 slicks, 1 den and the rest he just runs around barking like he cant smell a darn thing. Like last night for example. I put some buckets up to pull coons in to make it easier for me to hunt some pups. So i thought id take him in there so he could get an easy one to boost his confidence. He ran for 4 hrs without treeing. What the heck is going on im completely lost. ive been hunting for 18 yrs and ive never seen this happen. i dunno what to do. anyone have anything

I would take him to the vet and get blood drawn i got one that went stupid like this he had erlicia (dont know how to spell it lol) but it effects all dogs diff but he has made a complete turn around hope this helps

Not enough information. Was he still showing you coon consistantly after those hunts? does he act the same alone or with company? Has he had alot of coon knocked out to him? Has he been with a rough dog? Does he get gone like he did before or does hang around? Was he laid up for awhile or has he been hunted consistantly?

to answer ur questions. no he wasnt with a mean dog. he started this lil problem right after getting 800+ at southeastern treeing walker days. Which was feb 26 and 27 of this yr. i have hunted 25 times sense then so no he hasnt been put up. no i haven shot one down to him because he hasnt treed one lol. he hunts the exact same. goes deep, gets gone fast, he just never trees and when he does its wrong. hope that answers all ur questions.

I have a buddy going through the same thing with a 2 year old. At 14 months old he had 3 wins towards Grand. Since, he has gone in the tank almost exactly like your hound. My buddy was talking with another hunter about 2 weeks ago and informed my buddy that he had the same thing happen with a dog he owned a few years ago. The vet checked this dog's thyroid and found an inbalance. The vet treated the thyroid issue and the dog rebounded.

Had a buddy that dated a fat girl once and she blamed it on her thyroid but i never knew her to tree a possum.

come on a little humor never hurt anybody, now on the serious side check the T4 levels cost around 20 bucks for the thyroid at the vets

Ok heres the best i got. Get the dog a checkup to see if he has something wrong, if he gets a clean bill of health i would take him with a broke dog and just pleasure hunt him, if he trees with company knock a few coon out to him and see if he comes around. No one on here knows this dog like you do so its impossible to know whats going on with him. All you can do is go back to the beginning and see what happens, some dogs go through slumps but usually not at his age.

oh i understand that like i said ive been coonhunting for 18 yrs. just really really frustrated right now. this dog can win any givin night. gets deep by himself and has the meat and i just cant figure whats goin on. i even took him to a bucket saw 2 coons sittin in the tree and he never treed them. i just dunno.

you said slick trees is he running backwards to den trees ?that would explain maybe . if its not his health your gonna need to retrain in a controlled situation to break these bad habits get a caged coon start at square one like you would a pup so you can asess whats going on in that brain of his when dogs start bad habits its best to help them through it before it becomes way out of hand

Hey other night he wasnt running a bear was he they are alot down your way,i have had them to go dumb after being hunted to hard it could be couple things but dont give up.Did he do that before you changed his feed?might try cutting back on his feed alittle [AND NO TO ALL THE SMART ONES I DONT MEAN STARVE HIM] But some hounds will run bear that are 100% coondog or was.and alot of bear dogs will tree coon.but just sounds like hes needs to be put with a good broke hound and just hunt him couple times week.have seen very good hounds just stop altogether.keep you head up buddy it will work out.

I think that is what I would try first.........It would tell you a lot. After the vet trip anyway...........and I would get it out to him with some fire left in it..........Then praise and a bowl of his favorite ice cream. lol

Here's the deal, when a top hound "turns off the switch" it's most generally health related. I'd spend the money to have blood work done looking for tick borne diseases, heart worm, respritory problems, red/white blood cell count and tyhroid. Where I live tick borne diseases are becoming more and more prevalent; they can reek havoc in good hounds, and all hunters have to do is keep the ticks off them. Frontline is one of the cheapest trips to the vet you can make. Get him to a vet run some tests and find out; oh yeah, have his ears checked too, he might have a foreign object lodged in his ear canal or the start of infection, both can stop a dog from treeing. I'D HAVE HIS TEETH CHECKED ALSO. I WAS TOLD THAT A DOG ALSO SMELLS THROUGH THE ROOF OF HIS MOUTH. GOT A DOG BACK ONE TIME THAT HAD GONE "CRAZY" LIKE THAT AND FOUND A STICK GROWN OVER IN THE ROOF OF HIS MOUTH. IT REALLY MESSED UP HIS SCENTING ABILITY.

YA'LL REALLY THINK HE MIGHT BE COMING IN HEAT ??? I'VE HAD SOME BITCHES THAT ACTED "STOOPID" 'ROUND CYCLE TIME.

Didn't think about bear but if it is not medical it sure sounds as if something not to his liking happened around the tree, not by you but something happened that you didn't see or hear. JMHO I like fat bottom girls too ! LOL

Sounds like that my dog a few years back.. he was a running and treeing and the meat machine!! Then one night literally went to crap. This lasted about 4 months. we hunted that dog EVERY NIGHT for 60 days.. treed maybe 2 coons and the rest SLICK or he would just trail. Then one night he went real stupid and ran a pack of yotes and got his butt kicked bad. ripped his leg from toe to tail. we layed him up for 1 month and then he was perfectly fine. went back to treeing with the meat again. Is he running off game???
