whats makes a good dog to you

i think the dream dog is where u could go out any where and find that coon every time. it would never let you down. when other dogs couldnt tree the coon it would step up and find it. but realisticly i would just like a dog first and then maybe find a dog that was steadly treeing coons and didnt let anything stop them for a coon.

IM REALISTIC ABOUT COONDOGS. THEY DONT ALWAYS PERFORM THE SAME WAY NITE AFTER NITE. A GOOD HOUND TO ME IS ONE THAT WILL GO HUNTING WHERE EVER YOU TURN HIM LOOSE AND TAKES THE FIRST TRACK HE COMES ACROSS HOT OR COLD. I DO EXPECT HIM TO END UP UNDER A TREE ON 99% OF THE TIME. I DONT WANT TO SEE HIM UNLESS HE IS. THIS DOESNT ALWAYS HAPPEN BUT IT DOESNT KEEP ME FROM WANTING IT TO HAPPEN. I WANT MY DOG ALSO TO HUNT FOR ME NOT ME HUNTING HIM.MOSTLY I WANT MY DOG TO TREE COON AND DO IT CONSISTENTLY. HERE ON THE GULF COAST WE HAVE SOME OF THE TOUGHEST HUNTING CONDITIONS ANYWHERE. JUST TURN THEM LOOSE GET TREED ILL FIND AWAY TO GET TO THE DOGS. BUT I LOVE IT!

A GOOD DOG TO ME

One that has good kennel manners, one that is obedient,a dog that will hunt alone get deep if she/he must, an independant dog that will do all on their own,a dog that will stay hooked ( no matter what ) a good track dog (always going forward ) a dog of accuracy, most of all a dog that will use she/his ability, and brains each time you drop she/he ( COON SENSE ) if a dog don't learn where to find a coon they will never become a coon dog . Its true a lot of dogs will tree coon from a feeder, but to me a dog that only trees those easy coon is not a coon dog.......

john just descirbed my idea of a real good dog----the part about knowing where to find a coon is often overlooked. my old dog has found me many good little pockets where i would not have hunted if he hadnt gotten thru the country and treed in them.

I like to start with a dog that has alot of heart and brains. I think if you start there you wil always be able to get that dog your looking for. One that is there because it wants to be not beacuse we made it be there. The kind of hound that runs a coon with a desire to catch it not put it up a tree. When you put these traits together you get a hound that knows where to look for a coon and handles great. That's my kinda dog.

good dog

Good looks, good mouth, smart, seen not heard around the kennel, and the rest like John's ideal hound.

one that-

is smart enough to know the difference between a caged coon and a wild one. I want a dog that will run right on by that pet coon like it doesn't exist and go tree me a real one. Know where I can find one like that?

Posted by texhog on 08-28-2003 02:12 AM:

The perfect dog would be one that has the looks I want to start off with, then he would have the loudest mouth I have ever heard ( that would be very loud) . He would hunt like he was late for work! He would have a very good nose and be able to really move a bad track, he would have such a good nose and brains to go with it, as soon as you cut him loose he could tell if coons were close by, kind of like we can smell the lady next door is cooking pies, he can smell coons if they are in the area and if he dont then he knows he is going to have to range out and find one. He is a one bark tree dog and has the coon every time! He is the best natured dog, not a mean hair on him but when he does run into an alligator he is one bad dude, he just kills the mean dog and goes back to treeing, the other dogs at the tree loves him for it they all go back to treeing. ALWAYS comes if you call, even if he is running the biggest coon in the bottem he will throw it down and come to you. He will stay treed for about 4 hours and if you are not there he will go find you for you must be in some kind of trouble. If he cant find you he will go back to where you where you were parked and wait.

A good dog to me would be one that consistantly treed coons and never ran trash, and one that will do it all by himself.

Posted by John Carroll on 08-28-2003 02:21 PM:

I like a dog with brains and desire. I can't ever really like a dumb dog, even if it does tree coon.

I like a dog with a quiet, laid back disposition. Bird dogs are hyper; bounds ought not be.

I want him or her to look like a hound and sound like a hound. I like a cold-nosed dog that drifts a track and gets it treed. I want him to be an accurate, pressure tree dog, prferably of the sit-down variety.

I want them to be equally sharp treeing layup coon around the edge of a corn field, or treeing the hard running boar coons during rutting season.

I like a long, loud, clear horn bawl mouth on track and a ringing chop on tree.

I like them to hunt hard from the truck, leaving on the run, but not running by any coon. I like them to come back in thirty minutes or so if they haven't got struck, and to come whenever I call no matter what they're doing.

Finally...I like 'em Blue.

hey joe ,i have walkers but the dogs you are talking about have a lot of ticks on them and if you can put up with that then call warren sturtz/dan cahoy/mackie mann/ they have put together the simular blood that produce's what you'all been looking for.

i had a bluetick female 20+yrs ago that would not bark or show any interest in a cage coon .her faults was she couldn't be called off a tree like we could with our walkers at the time.she would climb and dig till you got there but you could lead her off the tree and turn her loose and she would go tree another one till you got there.

i have seen good stuff out of warren's stock and i'm going to feed some of it too till it proves not to be worth feeding. i have a male from mackies spanky dog that first time turned loose got into the dark and run with the old dog .got a female coming from dan's thats bred like the dogs of warren and mackie's got. getting a pup off warren's ben dog too.

you folks might want to go hunting with these guys and see if what your looking for has those dang ticks on them..lol

My female out of Uchtman's Albert won't pay any attention to a caged coon, but she'll go deep at night and get one treed.

You can lead her up to a cage with a coon in it, and she'll turn her head away from it.

If I did that then-

there would be one less idiot trying to make something of these red dogs!

ps. The thing about the dog passing up a caged coon was an inside joke. You had to be there at the time I released the coon to one of my young dogs and she ran right by it and treed a different one. That's how bad a trainer I am. The one time the coon doesn't run the wrong direction, my dog won't even track it.

A consistent dog that stays put, finishes what he starts and doesn't make you walk to empty trees night after night.

Bingo! You hit the nail on the head. A dog that is consistant, will hunt, strike, and tree the same almost everytime. I know different circumstances(weather, terrain,etc.etc.) makes a difference, but that falls on the owner of the dog, not the dog!

a dog that when he trees you expect to see a coon and dont need a lick of help doing it,also a dog that want go off the edge of the earth looking for a coon, i like for him to check back in if he aint found a coon. i want him to start hunting when i turn him loose , i dont want a get deep quick type of dog, them kind will run by coon tracks and never know it. i never cared what they look like, if they can tree coons in these mountains then they look good to me.lol

BRAINS!!! with none, you have nothing. One with Brains can be taught, and with that comes cosistency, which is the key to winning night in and night out. Yep, give me one with brains.

Looks don't mean SQUAT! Nose, brains, heart, desire, grit. This is what I want in a coon dog. I'll take him longer hair, shout ears, bobtail, tight mouth, loose mouth, 10lbs, or 110 lbs and any color in the rainbow. As long as he puts the meat at the end. Even if its a possum. That my idea of a treedog.
