-- What the Heck???? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928489089)
What the Heck????
I have had several pups with the "cow lick" along the top side of the neck out of my old Daisy female and she had this trait as well. The old timers tell me that the pups with the cow licks always make the best dogs and there may be something to that as I have had some good ones out of Daisy.
In this latest litter out of Yuma and Cl. Rv. Diamond Jim, I not only have three females with cow licks, I have two with chalk eyes. I bred to Diamond Jim 13 years ago and did not see either trait in the offspring. Yuma is not from my breeding as she was an outside dog that I purchased because I liked her pedigree. She goes back to Runnin Bullet and Tramp on the top and bottom and this is her first litter. I called the young man who bred her and he said that he had not seen either trait in the dogs before.
So my question is, have any of you seen cow licks or chalk eyes in Runnin Bullet, Tramp or Cl. Rv. Diamond Jim offspring????
Adios,
Gary
i would ask guy ormiston, i bet he can tell you
I'd ask John Smith. He and his dad bred clear river diamond Jim a lot. To a bunch of different lines. He can probably tell you.
gary
My hunting buddy has a bluetick female with both the cow lick and chalk eye. Hope that means shes gonna be a good one he and I are both do for a good one to come along. She is out of mad dog rhino and mad dog shelly but i could have that wrong. Im not sure what these dogs go back to but maybe they have one of the three dogs you listed in there somewhere. Cant think of where ive seen any others with the cowlick trait but Ive seen the chalk eye come out of piazon and several different females. I had a little female here at the house outa piazon that had one chalk eye, she was a decent dog. I know there are some others with chalk eyes but i cant remeber where they come from now.
I know that Guy Ormiston had a few chalk-eyed dogs in the past. The cow lick exhibited by my old Daisy female came from the Spur dog, if memory serves me correctly. Since I am keeping the male no matter what, I guess that I will keep the female so that my buddies will not have to explain what is wrong with their blueticks.
Robert and Melanie Hittson said that the old timers would fight over the pups with the cow licks and I must admit that the ones I had were pretty good...just not so sure about the blue eyes.
Adios,
Gary
Had it in a pup out of a Chief female, Warren was getting a stud fee pup and he took it immediately.

I don't believe there's much difference in chalk eyes, cowlicks, long hair, flag tail, monkey face, liver color, dark eyes, open ticked and the list goes on. If they make a top hound you'll like them.

blueticker, I agree with you on that statement. I don't think that there's any chance that these pups won't make above average coon dogs but I am going to be asking a lot more of them than that. I have fallen in love with the dry land lion hunting and if a dog is going to excel at that I am going to test them in different areas. I train these dogs on coons around home but when they get old enough to get over rugged terrain, I start hauling them to the mountains. Nose and knowing how to use it, is paramount but having great feet and legs that can carry them 20 miles or more a day in rugged terrain is also very important. When I drive 12 hours to hunt, I generally stay and hunt everyday from 5-8 days. It takes a dog with a lot of drive to want to go after day 3 when he is sore. I never worry about how good a tree dog they are as these blues always seem to have plenty of "tree" in them. Next year, you will no doubt see me hauling two blue eyed pups because the male that I must have and the female that my bride has fallen in love with are the two blue eyed ones. The female also has the cowlick to go with her blue eye.
Adios,
Gary
The chalk-eye is a recessive trait that goes back to the Vaughn dogs when Elbert breed into the Hyde fox hounds back in the 1920s and 30s. Heavy line breeding will bring it out, especially in hounds heavy to SR Diamond Jim, who was all Vaughn blood.

Jim, Eddie Moore came by the house the day before yesterday and said that he had purchased a blue eyed dog from you a few years ago as he was trying to breed for this trait. He said that he never produced a blue eyed pup while breeding blue eyed dogs to blue eyed dogs. He was impressed that I had two chalk eyed pups out of seven puppies without trying.
Adios,
Gary
Sounds like you have the genetic code.

Yeah, if I was trying to breed this characteristic, I would be just like Eddie....
Adios,
Gary
Yeah, Travis owns her now. I have a female out of her and Duke.

Gary does that mean grey? I've not personally seen that but I was called a liar one time when I said that I had never had a redtick pup born either. Way back in the years that when you had the cowlick it was thought to be a kick back of ol Sage. Although I have had pups with cowlicks but not those eyes.
Yes Sir, gray, chalk, white or blue, I have heard the off colored eyes referred to in all these ways. It seems the bluetick guys call it "chalk eyed" but since I was raised on a ranch where we used cow dogs, many of catahoula decent, I refer to them as blue eyes.
Yes, these are my first blue eyed ones but I have had many of the cowlicks, especially on the back of the neck or head.
Adios,
Gary

Meadowoods blue Penney has a cowlick. I always look for it in her pups. Sometimes a marker like that is a blessing
I have one with a cow lick on the top of her neck also.
She is from Pounder x Shipsewana Sis cross. I have not seen any of her pups have it.

Cowlicks are the rule around here rather than the exception. They really began showing up with the Daisy female that I purchased from Robert and Melanie Hittson. She was one of the two generation all dual grand cross litters that the Hittsons made. She was out of Kenny Jones Spur dog and the Virck's Smokey female. She was a great reproducer and a nice little coon dog, I sure do miss her.
The Hittsons told me that the old timers would go to blows over the blue dogs with the cowlicks. I must agree that they do seem to be the better dogs that I have hunted. My dogs go back to the Curlee female of Jim Smalling quite often and she was known to have a pretty big cowlick from what I understand.
I cannot tell you where the blue eyes came from but I have a feeling, I may see it again if I am able to get pups from Frio and my better females.
Adios,
Gary
I have a 3yo female with the cowlick. Her sire is off of bullet2 and the dam has pounder in there through the big time Wendy dog. I've also heard some of the old dog men looked for this.
Gary I have raised a few pups but can't remember having a blue eyed pup until now. Never had one that I knew of from Rebel. Irene died 4 days after having pups. We saved 4 pups . One has a blue eye. Irene had real dark eyes. Rebel had dark eyes. Guess a throw back from somewhere.
