Trashy hound?

Is there a quick way to fix a trashy hound?I got one that is getting more trashy the more I hunt him.For example this past weeks hunt.He ran squirrels,ran a deer,treed a den and treed a tree full of turkeys.He has treed bout 40 coons by himself in style.This dog hunts on a dead run all night.I know he needs hunted down.Curious if there's any way to stop the trash running quickly so I can enjoy hunting him.Also this dog has only been hunted with a old dog 3 times in 3 months.

consistence way more important than how fast. way more.

I have a young dog that can get pretty trashy when to coon are thin. I got him off deer real easy when he was a pup by dumping him on them and shocking him off then shooting a coon down to him before putting him away. Lately I know he's been running some fox and he's treed a few fishers and porcupines. My plan is i'm going to get some fox sent, lay a track for him, dump him on it, shock him off then go get a coon down to him, same as I did with the deer. I can't say Iv'e initiated the plan yet but it's about the best I can come up with. I'm hoping in solving the fox issue he'll start figuring out he's not just a coon hound 1st he's a coon hound all the time and the fisher and porcupine issue will work themselves out because I really don't approve the old method of shooting it out and beating the dog with it. When you shoot an animal down in front of the dog your telling him you want those treed. IMO

He's not treeing slick.The first track every night will be as soon as he hits the woods.He will run it,tap a few trees,then locate on a den or squirrel tree.He won't lock down treed and acts like the scent it weak.I can call him off that and he will go on a dead run looking for another track.He will strike another track and repeat.He will run anything that lays a track.I been thinking about taking him to timber a couple hours before dark.

how old is this dog ?

Back when I was a kid we had what we called check dogs.They were over broke on trash and would come tell on the young dogs when they ran trash.I don't think many dogs today are wired that way.If I had a check dog I could shut the trash running down quick.Another thought I had was to lay him up till the kitten coons come out and the coons are moving better.

LoL.This young dogs mother use to tree a bunch of turkeys until I broke her.I just lead him off them the other night.This young dog was born at my house and I like him so Im willing to go the extra miles its gonna take to get him right.Hes got the mouth,heart and hustle that's needed to hunt in the hunts.If I ever get him ready he will be hell on wheels.

if your going to keep him, you cant let him get away with being trashy. If he trees or runs anything but a coon BREAK him. I squirrel hunt so a dog treeing squirrel in the day time is not a problem for me. But if my dogs go to treeing them at night then I have a problem. dual purpose and being trashy are two different things. Deer, turkey, fox, hogs, possum are all problems

check them turkey trees close only one i ever treed in had a coon in it too round here turkeys fly into the roost so they either treein on on noise they make or turkey manure.id love to see a tree climbin turkey!!!!

Id say they are winding treeing them turkeys like a layup coon.I hunted this trashy dog with a broke honest coondog Lastnight.He got some juice.He also treed a coon by himself.I think it was a good hunt for him.

At 19 months, and he has been hunted a while, I would personally start trash breaking him. Work on one animal at a time. Find a deer, drop him on them, use your e collar to correct him, it's very important to climb the ladder unless you already know how much to use, every dog is different.
Don't get excited and put it on the highest setting, and then lay him out, that will destroy some dogs.

Any ways, I'm sure you already know that. I will drop a pup on deer several drops in a row. Usually takes 3 to 4 nights, and will usually need revisited in a few months.
Once the dog no longer wants anything to do with the off game then I go back to hunting coon. I prefer not to mix the two.

Every dog is different, but it seems to me a lot of them have at least one off game animal that they tend to be hard headed about.

With squirrels I just shock them off the tree. Mine still isn't completely broke, but she is better then she was.

Another method would be to use a blindfold, and scent on a rag. In your backyard, when the dog gets excited about the scent, give him a hard switch.

The main thing is to associate negative consequences with the scent.

There is no "quick fix" for a hound, or a horse, or a mule, or a person. If you don't enjoy the challenge of breaking him, you should sell him and get a dog with less drive. I see people on here poking fun at Fisher 13 for teaching his dogs all of the things he teaches them, but if you teach your dog how to learn, he will be easier to correct when problems arise.
