Let's talk trainin pups!!

Maybe we all can learn a few things that can help us along as they grow with age! Feel free to give your thoughts as this goes along! If one is to old to learn,he's to old to train one! How do you start one??Have at it,Danny G.

By myself, by theieeselves. Very very seldom will the ever see a cage coon before hand. A coon tail or dead coon, yes but 2-3 times only. I guarantee any hound at my house at 10 months old will go hunting opposite direction of a hard treedogs if you let them get treed. I'll. Then turn them loose the other way and thats the direction they will go. Dont believe me, numbers at the bottom of all my post. Bring 4 dogs and a couple 12 packs of beer/cash and we can bet lol

what ever works!

i don't have a set plan. maybe a hide,maybe a cage coon, may turn a coon loose to them before i take them hunting maybe after some nites in the woods.
i always start them with a old dog. this just helps me keep from wasteing to much of my time with one thats not ready to be singled out yet.
oh! 1 last thing lots n lots of hunting time!

I start using coon scent on toys with them when they're too little to hit the woods. A good coon hide and plenty of play with it. Might even spray a house cat with coon scent and let em chase it around .

training pups

i like to do a little imprinting with a tail or hide when there just off momma then from about 7 months on show them a cage coon when they show enough interest i like getting them out usally with the old dogs at first when the help the old dogs track and tree they get hunted alone and i try to put them on coon every time out wether it be a occasional feed pile or spot lighting and alot of alone hunting with amix of other dogs so they get used to hu8nting with others as well as alone if i see that they are me tooing to much no more other dogs just alone this method allows me fist and for most to let me know when pup is ready to start hunting when his confidence is good enough to go to hunts this is just a guide line every pup is different but ive found if you gotta trick them to much to getem to hunt dont breed them i still think controll every situation to show your pup what you want is key to making a pleaseing to hunt finished hound

my too cents

Walks in the woods as a tiny puppy. My best litter was out walking in the woods before they were fully weaned from their mom. I continue this until I take them for night walks. They never seem to have issues with getting through the woods. Plus the fear factor of the unknown in the woods is gone. I have had plenty of 4 month old pups going with old dogs. Always have a tracking collar so you can find them if they get lost. They don't need the fear of being lost.

ill usually mess with a hide. I try to make it fun for them and challenging by hiding it and watching them work for it. I don't mess with the hide for long periods of time. I like to walk my pups in the woods during daylight while there little. Sit on a log every once in a while and just watch them. I take them around the family gatherings (CHIEFS GAMES) at mom and dads. Lots of noise there. I think when there too young to hunt they need to spend as much time running loose as possible.

I use the method Ed Mead taught me, and you as well Danny. He developed a great way to bring out the treeing instinct at a young age, by using the net with scent on a very long pole. I had heard of his method, but was kind of unsure till I witnessed it for my self when I took a litter of pups I had from Pokey and Jet 6 to his place for him to choose his pup. We took them out to the pond, and I watched him as he laid the trail, place the net in a tree then we turned out the pups and at 9 weeks old they trailed the scent and started to whine at the tree. He dropped the net down out of the tree letting the pups chase it, he placed it back in the tree and the pups treed on the net. It was something to see.

Lots of good points

Seems like everyone has a way that works for them and years ago I did alot of the same as some have posted. One thing is a must for me and that is hunting them alone from the start. It just seems for my likings to work out better and I know for sure at the end what the youngin has done on it's own. Hopefully everyone has a project for this fall and if so,feel free to share how things are going and I'll do the same. I'm going to have my hands full for quite some time with this gang I have here now. Going to be fun to a point along with some aggrivation for sure at some point! Keep'em in the timber,Danny G.

Not that I believe I'm a great trainer, But Ill trough my 2 cents in. In fact if I have a nice pup you can bet it was a pure natural. I simply take the time to expose them to scent.


I've had some good results using Ed Meads method.

I do believe it works better with 2 to 4 pups.

Good Breeding and Natural instincts is a must also.

Be careful not to work them too much and get them relying on sight.


Ill add a kicker on breeding : If your bitch aint the coondog you want,, DONT breed her.
