What would you do about dog that quit treeing?
What would you do if you had a 15 month old dog that was treeing Good and now seems to have lost interest in treeing. Will run track quit it and run another track. Have seen him end them and locate hard several times marked it gone in and found the coon while he was working another track. He really isn't treeing much if at all. Has stayed on one in three months prior to this was doing good on 20-30 trees.
Would you
A.) lay him up awhile
B.) knock coons out and tie him back not letting him have any
C.) cull
D.) hunt him through it it's just a phase
E.) none of the above ( please explain your idea of what to do.)
Is he for sale? Tom

Before choosing any of those four options, I'd do my darndest to figure out WHY the dog went backwards because you can't really choose any of your options without first understanding what caused the problem.

I would first start by taking your dog to the vet and have him tested for lymes disease.

Id just keep on hunting him till I couldn't stand it anymore. I had one go through exact same thing. Made me bout go crazy and cuss A LOT. He got through it. Id also make sure he was good an healthy. Vet check. How many coons has he had. I had a old gentlemen tell me once that to many when young can cause this. Cause the last place they smell a coon the strongest is on the ground where its laying dead. Sounded good anyhow.

if i had to guess i would say he is checking and finding another track and running it...
this time of year with litters on the ground and multiple coon in 1 spot it happens...especially with young dogs just putting it all together...they arent 1000% confident to stay...theyve learned to check and when checking they hit another track and take it..
but could be a lot of other things as well...

What do you give the dog if it has lymes disease and where do you get it?

My redbone did this , but only when he was hunted with other dogs. I started going by my self and I shot alot of coons out to him and now He won't leave.

He was layed up for a month brought to ky from ga and hunted. Since he's been here he just really hasn't done well. He was hunted in the swamps in south ga lots of water few coons. The only thing I got left is that he just can't do it in the north because he sure enough did it in the south. You would think it would be the other way around but not so far with this one.
He never got ate up at the tree if that's the answer you thought I might have.
To the others About the vet check:
He had a yeast infection when we first got him back so he has been treated for that. We no longer give him dog food with sugar. Other than that he seems fine. What would be the symptoms of Lyme disease
quote:go to the vet and they will test for it. if need they will give you pills to give to the dog.

i dont know unless he was hunted in 1 place in ga and it became his back yard.i have heard dad talk about dogs
going threw a spell where they try to be the worlds greatest
track dogs.
Try this!
Get a caged coon and tease him with it on the ground. When he pays attention to it praise him real good. When he quits it stop petting him, but you start messing with the coon. Then repeat the petting process as you move the coon up the in the tree. Just make him think he is the biggest hero in the world when he gets on the tree. Atleast that's what I would do.

cause my cup has overflowed
The pup has stoppe Treeing coon because the fun has wore off and now everything he does is only for himself .... That's my guess . Have you been easy on him and let him be a pup ? May be time to let him know who he's Treeing coons for . YOU

This spring I was hunting my most recent bear pup . She treed around 40 coon and had done it right. When she hit around 10 months she almost quit Treeing completely . Was contempt with trailing , locating coon and going on to find another . I sat her up 2 weeks and started putting some "pressure" on her and letting her know plain and simple... The only way she's having fun Is if I'm having fun ... And the the only way in having fun Is if she's Treeing coon like I want her to .

I completely understand that the fun has wore off this pup has been hunted hard, put away wet. But he was laid up for awhile... How did you let your pup know she/he was treeing coon for YOU? He hasnt had one knocked out in three months is that the answer? Reason he hasn't had one knocked out is because he hasn't done his job. So should we knock a coon out to him even if he didnt tree until tied back? He worked the track but was milling on the ground instead of treeing do I reward him with a coon even though he didnt deserve rewarding?

For the yeast infection we switched to a gluten free food which is sport mix I think it's in a gray bag. And the vet gave us otecetic flush to clean ears with twice a week in both ears. Also remicin ointment to apply to both ears twice a day every 12 hours for 10 days.
