Started in 1986 hunting with my best friend Joe. I was hooked. He then got me my first redbone in 87. Her name was Blondie.
Joe passed in 93 in a boating accident. Only off colored dog I ever owned was the bluetick pictured here. His wife gave him to me after Joe died. O"Stump died in 99. Blondie Sept. 8 2001

Well lets see here.

I worked all summer mowing lawns to pay for a trip and the hound at 12 years old. So that would put it at 24 years now. Been coonhunting since I was 4. The best finished hound I've owned would be a close one between my old NtCh Ginger with 4 wins after coming out of retirement at 9yrs old that dissappeared at a hunt and the NtCh Kitty female I have now. Kitty hunts harder but Ginger just made it all look easy. Ginger beat several that went on to make GrNtCh and beat one several times that got 22 in the Ukc World Hunt. Kitty beat a hound that got 4th in the Ukc World Hunt and one that had won over 18, 000. But the best young hound I ever had was one out of Ginger and GrtCh Brown's Oklahoma Twister named Ann. She was in 7 cast never lost a cast to include several Purina Hunts all before she was two and only needed a first to be a NtCh. She hung the buckle of her collar in a chainlink fence and hung herself with 8 week old pups on her out of GrNtCh YR Red Rocky. It was Rocky's next to the last litter and her only litter. Just to prove what kind of young hound she was she would beat NtChGinger in the woods 80% of the time, and her 3rd place at the Kansas State hunt came from her running a coon down. One of those you could hunt all night every night and never wear her down.

I've hunted redbones for 35 years. GrNiteCh Sawblade Fiddle has been my favorite. NiteCh Red Sage was probably the best one I ever hunted with. Allen G. Tex dog was as good as any also.

1963 was my start with Redbones---

The hound's name was General Red. 1985 Spook. 1988 Red Cheta II. I have owned a few from other kennels that were good hounds, but the 3 I have mention, well they were the head of the class when it comes to personality, voice, looks, nose and treeing coon, not empty trees.

Good question there Kelly. Now this will show up the kind of drive the pups out of Ann and Rocky had. Three of them which were the ones that went local dissappeared in the woods. Even as pups they would go until they hit a coon. This meant with the thin coon we have down here that once they got things figured out if you didn't have a tracking system you lost em becuase you were eventually end up with a night the coon weren't moving and they would just dissapear, no come back. I had a tracking system and so did one other around here his pair turned in to nice solid hounds. He eventually sold his female. She was more of just a tree hound, kind of like some of the heavy Ace stuff. His male reminded me a ton of GrNtCh YR Rebel, nice soild well rounded hound. The male I kept reminded me of Twister but he got shot in the face soon as we got him going, ended his career, he was a solid hound until the. The female I kept was a clone of her mom Ann with more winding ability, she got ran over. Both of these weren't really hunted like I usually had as I was off in college. Another guy was hunting the male for me, that's how he got shot. I seen enough in the hunting they had though to seen what they were. That's why I bred them the second time to get Daisy I still have. Becuase of the way the Rocky pups were crossed this made them triple Fireball and close, since Ginger was a granddaughter to him. Both that Rocky and Twister crosses I had down here would flat go hunting and out of both crosses we only had one that was a cull. The male I had just hung around after he figured out he couldn't smell. If it was super hot he'd look like a million bucks but he had a super cold nose that was gone after the gunshot. He just dissappeared from the farm about 4 years ago. Think he was around 12 at the time. Think he went off to die. A few talked of breeding to him but never did. So the only pups that ever came from that cross forword was the ones I had here. That's one of the reasons I have tried to get a good number of pups out of here in recent years trying to spread the wealth.

Hunted as a child with my uncle and grandfather, they had redbones. However they lived 3 hours away so I only coonhunted a few times a year with them, usually at Thanksgiving and Christmas break.
I worked in Tobacco during the summers and at 14 years old in 1984 bought my first Redbone puppy from Tony Russell in Big Springs, WV. This dog turned out, though he was notjhing great, very much a me too dog with a low mouth. However at the time in my youth I thought he was the greatest.
My best 2:
Ch'PR' Herring's Pine Cone Chance - I bought her as a started dog from Lester Greene, she was bred similar to the JABO dog which makes sence since Larry got JABO from Lester also. Chance was a great strike dog and great track dog and a good tree dog she choked down when treeing which sometime affected my ability to hear her. She won many casts, but never got the first place need to be a Nt Ch.
'PR'Herrings Pine Cone Max - MAX was out of Bernard Schindeckers (sp?) Rambo male. he was small built, super dark red, almost dead silent on track, impressive tree dog. He was given to me by a redbone guy because he had health issues. Max was sick and I spent big $ trying to save him. We got him healthy, only to have him take a setback 6 months later and die. I do not normally like semi-silent to silent dogs, but I must admit Max was fun to hunt and impressive on the tree. I wish he had lived longer.

About 15 years

First time I ever went coon hunting was with a family friend. He was a walker man. ( kenny Horne) was his name. He had some fine hounds. I went with Him a few times when I was about 15. A few years went buy an I got the chance to go with a redbone. Roger Sellers an his ole GRNITECH Jim dog is the reason I started hunting redbones!! I believed I loved that dog more than he did. He was sure enough a coondog. After hunting with Roger a while I wanted my own dog. Lester Greene put me in business with a 1 1/2 old female. Maggie!!! The best dog I've owned so far. She came frome Rogers as a pup. Lester was getting out of coon hunting an he had Jabo an Maggie forsale. I choose Maggie an Larry Stringer bought Jabo. We were going to breed them but maggie got hit buy a car one night. Gone but not forgotten .. To this day Stringers Hillbilly Jabo is the best that I have had a chance to hunt with.

32 years. Got my first Red pup when I was 12, with money saved mowing the neighbors lawn.

Had a few good ones including that first pup that turned out fairly well. I still consider Tex my best because he was the most balanced. Hot or cold tracks/weather.... there were few places (large, small, wet or dry) that he could not tree a coon in. Didn't like thunder and lightning storms. Worked out well for me because I don't care much for it either.
