Gray walkers....

I'm sure this has been covered several times, and I know it isn't completely uncommon, but I personally don't know a whole lot about them.

Is there a way to register them at all?

And, whether they can be registered or not, I'm assuming color has no effect on ability, am I correct?

do you have pics of them.

I have seen some pups that looked grey as young pups, but later that grey turned tan as they got older.
would like to see what you are talking about and how old are they?

I have seen some turn smokey black & have had one stay gray.I think it comes from hersberger blood imo.

possibly,,, but I have

seen this in some recent show dogs at the winter classic and a lot of them go back to some finley river dogs as well.
I remember some coffee colored heads on walker dogs years ago. mostly all finley river bred.

i think it go's back to the field trail dogs that were bred for getting the job done ,
before when they bred greyhound,elkhound ect. into them to make them faster and smarter...

then along came the hunts and papered dogs,
paper placeing/swaping papers,

now the papers are worth more than most of the dogs that have them..

you will see the gray color throwback when linebreeding a lot,,
most of grey ones i heard about make better coondogs than the pretty ones that meet the color standards..

you will find them in most all the walker bloodlines if you look hard enough and people tell the truth..

the kennel clubs used to not allow to reg the grey one s,
but the littermates still carried the dna for it
so not allowing the ones showing the grey to be reg.
wouldnt stop the color unless you droped the whole litter from being reg..

We had a litter of foxhounds yrs ago that were really inbred (accidentally) that were all grey headed and stayed that way but they didnt produce it

I am no professional, but it is a gene or something out of the ordinary that creates this color. The Silver Lab is exactly the same thing. The number one problem with a TRUE grey walker is that they almost always seem to suffer with skin problems. This is also a problem with silver labs. I owned a grey walker for ten years and she was one of the best.

I tend to agree with shane i own a grey walker right now she is 2 and has had skin problems her whole life.

Years ago I had a Nt Ch son of the origanal Finley River Pete. I raised quite a few pups out of this dog and nearly every litter had a grey one or two. All of them got darker as they grew up and most of them turned black or almost black.I registered them as tri-color and they were usually the first pups to sell.I can't say they made better dogs but they sure were just as good as the others.

I've got a male who has produced a grey pup in every litter. Since he has been bred to different females- I'm guessing it is him He's pretty heavy on the old Finley River lines.

None of the pups I have had skin problems. I've kept a couple of them and keep in contact with the others. No skin issues. There is 7 of them. No health problems.

Here are a few pictures of my walker Daisy. She does have a skin issues but its only on the grey part. Where her fur is white it is completely different its a lot softer then the grey.

Looks like a regular walker with mange to me.

We actually have taken her to the vet and the vet said it wasn't mange but thanks anyway.

The greyish hue is caused by a modifer to the black color gene. Technically, the color is still considered black.

I have seen this many times in several different lines. Most appear mostly black by the time they hit maturity. I will say this the picture of the female looks more like blueticking than the gray hue of black. Ya all know the walcurs and blu-dawgs were both considered English dawgs once upon a time.

The blue color is a dilute, and it's a dominant gene. If you breed blue to blue, you only get blue. With the dilute genes do come a lot of skin problems. They have weaker immune systems and almost always have genetic demodex mange, plus flea/food/seasonal allergies, sunburn, hotspots, thin coats ect.

Been around Pit Bulls and Hounds my whole life, and know quite well about the "blue" dogs. It's something that should be avoided if possible.

I know there is one finley river bred female that is behind 90% of the show dogs that if you breed on her to tight you get grey dogs.

i have a grey walker he was real silver as a pup now he is 4-months old and turned black be you can still see a little grey in his head no skin problems he is lone pine finley river breed the grey goes back to old finley river blood

Here is a picture of one I got from a litter of 8. I also had 3 other litters by the same male, 4 total, and all had blue pups within each litter. I had a nice casual discussion on the TW forums going w Cripple Creek and for some reason it is now deleted.

I'm not afraid to mention this odd color coming out of a few crosses I made recently. I've been breeding TWs for near 20 yrs and was shocked to see this surface. I'm very curious to where it comes from and why breeders continue to not follow the breed standard, by not culling them from gene pool. Is it so hard to openly discuss this? To the point a post gets deleted? Are breeders hiding this information from potential buyers?

yea stacey.... I was not happy about

that thread getting deleted, cause that was my stud ad on my dog.
what the hey.......I had a lot of time into that thing. I was getting business calls on pups and stud service.

I think the fued between those last two posts on there got it deleted. Why couldnt they just delete their posts or put a warning on there or something. Either way is really disappointed me.

I still think it is a color pigmentation genetics problem coming through on line bred and or inbred strains.
It has to be because it shows up in pedigrees where there are no matching dogs.
albino animals have either blue eye or glass colored eyes and they have skin pigmentation problems as well. thats in humans and animals.

I would shy and will shy away from registering anything discolored like that. I will probably just give them away.
I am like you I have never had this problem from a single pup in over 32 years of breeding. also I have never even seen it until going to the winter classic and the pedigree had several of the top winning dogs in the UKC shows right now and over the past 5 or 6 years. The whole litter was colored like this and they were sold as far as I know. They were getting regular prices for dogs with their show pedigree. I think about $250.

As you can see from dougs pics above, these pups have not got a single show dog in their pedigree or any of the current hounds I saw at the classic in his pedigree, But however, doug did make a tight cross he was real open about. It was a half bro/half sister cross and the next gen are like neices/nephews or something. Doug can tell it better than me. He described it as 3/4 cross. I have some friends down here that made a cross just like that and it turned out super. No color issues or ability issues for sure. several are coondogs and were early on.

Is there a single dog showing up several times in the same 4 gen pedigree of the pups that turned out grey?

Not sure if we will all figure it out. We need a scientist or genetisist if I spelled that correctly( haha) that can figure out the genome type and all that biology stuff I slept through in high school.

You are exactly right about the field trial race dogs. Had them even ran gray hounderier dog in 1992 from missiouri. Seen many good ones.
