raw eggs

does any no if it would harm a dog to feed a raw egg on top of dry dog food .i feed dog chow

If I remember right. When I worked at a Greyhound kennel as a teen the pregnant ones always got a raw egg at feeding time.

They are not bad for them. 1 or 2 a week. You can give the dog the whole thing, shell and all. My dogs crack them open and suck out the yolk and eat the shell, they love it and it has its benefits to the dog.

J have 15 laying hens here and I crack an egg on all the dogs feed each day. Good scource of protein and good for their coats.

yep they are good for a dog thier all protien i also give them to horses in thier feed if i get a dog thats on the thin side i put eggs and milk over thier feed they come to the front pretty quick jmo

i don't think the date has much to do with it. its where the eggs come from and how sanitary the laying boxes are. My brother always liked a couple raw eggs in his beer, until the day he had to go to the E-R room about 2 hrs after having his favorate beverage.. i think cooking the eggs before giving to the dog would give piece of mind. jmo

Cooking would eliminate the salmonella risk but it also changes the nutritional value of the egg. It's better for the dog to eat it raw with the shell.

My grandpa has fed raw eggs to dogs as long as he can remember. Said it was something his dad did to get a dogs coat shined up and looking good.

we got a few hens running around and laying where ever they feel like it. our yard dog keeps finding them and eating them. but i never seen him eat the shells..but have seen the hens eat them after the dog was done.

ive seen guys put egg in thier beer not me id say cooking them would help i really never gave it a thought

I remember reading somewhere that if fed raw its best to just give the yolks. something about the raw whites does something to interfere with their digestion or something. Don't think it causes any trouble unless you are feeding a whole bunch though. I've always just given them the whole egg, shell and all, never had any trouble and if you do it for a while it really will help shine them up. Some dogs will eat the shell some leave it but its good calcium and won't hurt them to eat them. You just don't want to cook them (hard boil) and feed the shell that can cut them up/choke them.

Just be careful hunting too close to a chicken farm if you feed them on a regular basis. I've known of dogs being shot over chickens.

Eggs are great for dogs! They are highly digestible and provide more nutrients than most things. Most guys who race sled dogs I know add eggs to their dogs diet! The only downfall for feeding eggs is that it sticky and thats not much of a downfall.

Eggs are GREAT for dogs but the truth is that scientific studies show they are more digestable after cooking than fed raw.

So why take a chance on Samonella and just cook them for your dogs. I give mine an egg (I have six hens onsite for the family) at least three times a week. I stir up the egg in a small plasctic cup and microwave for about 45 seconds it scrambles them just right.

Egg proteins contribute substantially to the daily nitrogen allowances in Western countries and are generally considered to be highly digestible. However, information is lacking on the true ileal digestibility of either raw or cooked egg protein. The recent availability of stable isotope–labeled egg protein allowed determination of the true ileal digestibility of egg protein by means of noninvasive tracer techniques. Five ileostomy patients were studied, once after ingestion of a test meal consisting of 25 g of cooked 13C- and 15N-labeled egg protein, and once after ingestion of the same test meal in raw form. Ileal effluents and breath samples were collected at regular intervals after consumption of the test meal and analyzed for 15N- and 13C-content, respectively. The true ileal digestibility of cooked and raw egg protein amounted to 90.9 ± 0.8 and 51.3 ± 9.8%, respectively. A significant negative correlation (r = −0.92, P < 0.001) was found between the 13C-recovery in breath and the recovery of exogenous N in the ileal effluents. In summary, using the 15N-dilution technique we demonstrated that the assimilation of cooked egg protein is efficient, albeit incomplete, and that the true ileal digestibility of egg protein is significantly enhanced by heat-pretreatment. A simple 13C-breath test technique furthermore proved to be a suitable alternative for the evaluation of the true ileal digestibility of egg protein.

"The calculated true ileal digestibility of cooked egg protein amounted to 91%. This finding demonstrates that even cooked egg protein, which has generally been considered to be easily digestible, is malabsorbed to some extent after ingestion of a physiologic load...In this study, it was shown that after ingestion of 25 g of raw egg protein, almost 50% is malabsorbed over 24 h. The higher digestibility of cooked egg protein presumably results from structural changes in the protein molecule induced by heating, thereby enabling the digestive enzymes to gain broader access to the peptide bonds."

Finally someone gets it. While ingredients are important in any feed or feed items, the manner in which they are presented for the dog to digest is the deciding factor. Rice is a classic example. So are feathers aka "chicken by-products". They are almost 100% protein and will cause the feeds protein % on the back of the bag to increase. Unfortunately feathers are totally undigestible and are of no use to the dog. But they fool the shyt out of the owner reading the back of the bag.\

To realize maximum benefit nutritionally for the dog, you should cook them first. Raw eggs in a dogs digestive system will produce little to no benefit as the egg white and yolk actually work against each other and essentially cancel each other out nutritionally.

There are two problems with giving your dog raw eggs. The first is the possibility of food poisoning from bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli. The second is the presence of the naturally occurring protein avidin in raw egg whites. Occasional consumption is not an issue, but excess avidin interferes with the functioning of biotin in the body. Biotin, more commonly known as vitamin H or B7, is essential for the growth of cells, metabolism of fat, and transference of carbon dioxide, amongst other functions. Even with cooked eggs, moderation is key. No more than one egg a day.
I give my dogs 3 cooked eggs a week. Mon,wed,fri. Like someone else posted. I just microwave them. Plus when its cold out. They love the hot meal. LOL
