tight mouth track dogs thats have won big???
What tight/silent dogs out there that have done alot of winning?
Not to many in UKC. If your dog is consistently getting 25 on strike and 125 on tree that's 150,
A dog getting 100 and backing yours all night long wins far to often.
not just UKC, talking everything over all.....

Tight on track has nothing to do with not getting first strike.
There was a walker named Scar that won the world a few years back. Seems to me the article I read said he was tight on track. Got split a lot because he didn't have a lot of tagalongs.

If someone can find the scorecard that was posted for the Final Four of the World Hunt that Janice Joplin won, you would see a score that won it all with a low strike dog.

I know of a couple nt ch and grntch that did not open until just before treed.
Tight mouth dogs can win especially on a 1 or 2 coon cast. If you have a barking type dog that gets by thereself abunch, that's hard to beat.

tight mouth
iv HERD that briar creek zeb and that hard knockin big momma were both pretty tight. they have both done some winning.
I don't know anything about pointing dogs and their current scoring system in competition. From the old stories I have read I believe a dog was expected to back. Might or might not have got points for backing but for sure was not penalized. It sure would be agravating to have four independent Pointers headed for parts unknown. And they were all tight mouth to my knowledge.

Think about it
I hunt a 3rd strike dog and splits a lot but that is only 175 but if he don't split it gets gut c. so what do you do.
Goes back to the old " good handler can take a mediocre dog and win ". They pitch when a dog strikes and most dogs that are tight are gonna get the tree 1st or 2nd,. hard to beat a handler.

I absolutely hate mouthy dogs.
It seems to me there is at least 2 babblers on every cast, but in reality that probably isnt the case.
We have a tendancy to remember the 1 time we got beat by that me-too babbler but forget the times we got flat out beat by a coondog.
There are PLENTY of winning dogs that werent mouthy.

tight mouthed
A hound that leaves the lead strap like a rocket focusing only on getting a coon treed as fast as possible, alone or with company, without trashin, or staying in the ground, would be deadly in most terrains, whether it opened a lot or not. I agree that an average tight mouth dog wouldn't be worth a hoot in thick coons. With a great one it wouldn't matter in a 2hr. hunt of any registry.

There's a big difference between a still mouth dog and a tight mouth dog.
