Gas prices and coonhunting.
Haveing recently been layed off and jobs being scarce, I am able to hunt every nite all nite, so I thought maybe id take in a dog to get ready for the world hunt for someone.
After doing a little figureing on how much I need to charge someone to be sure im makeing a little bit of grocery money, I about fell out of my chair.
My old truck gets 13 mpg and at 4.00 a gallon i think id be very lucky to be able to hunt on 20 bucks worth of gas a nite.
Hunting one right ,to me means 5 nites a week minimum.
so now im looking at 400 per mnth in gas alone.
how much should a guy figure it costs for feed and equipment? lights, bulbs, boots, bibs, shells, tracking system, skeeter dope....etc.
25 bucks a week?
ok,now we are at 500 per mnth. what is a fellers time worth?
at 5 hrs a nite 5 nites a week we have 100 hrs a mnth of actuall hunt time in the dog. I cant do it for nothing, but id say very few people would be willing to even cover my expenses to hunt a dog for them.
These gas prices are killing us all.
If I had to drive 65 miles a night to hunt there is no way I could afford it either.
You are right there are not many out there that could afford to pay you to hunt a dog, but the reality is, you only need one.

You just need to find the person that realizes that if they hunt the dog right the "expenses" part is really null and void since they would be paying that amount out anyway.
Develop a fee that you charge to hunt the dog with "expenses" being extra. We live in a $4.00 a gallon world, people need to realize that a business cannot just eat that expense.

Marv call Rev.M. He may need someone to hunt Hawk in the World. He will spend the money on a quallity handler/hunter like yourself. I know if I could aford to pay you to hunt my dog and handle her in the world she would be on her way. It is one heck of a ride from PA to IL if I even get that far.Jim

Good post Elvis,
I've been thinking the same thing....HOW LONG CAN I AFFORD TO HUNT?
What is this going to do to the price of dogs? If you buy a pup for $ 300. Feed it for 18 months, haul it hunting for 8-10 months, pay it up in all kennel clubs, vet bills, etc. how much is this dog worth if it will do a nice job of treeing a coon?
How much do you have in it?
In the past I didn't think twice of driving 200 miles 1 way to pick up a pup, now that trip will cost me $ 100 and I won't do it!
Hoosier,
If it is important to you, you will find a way.
Elvis,
Why do you need a truck that gets 13 mpg?
THe little Ford Rangers advertise 27 mpg. Buy an old beater Ford Ranger with a 4-cylinder and stick shift. Old trucks can sometimes be boughten for a mere $1,000.00. Heck, back in the day coon hunters didn't hunt out of trucks. They hunted out of cars. The trunk was the dog box.
If you spend $20.00/ night to hunt 5 nights/ week for a year, your gas expenses alone are $5,200.00. Buy a old beater that gets 25 that should cut the expense in 1/2 plus the $1,000.00 to buy and you are saving $1,600.00.
Buy an old beater Chevette and load the dogs in the hatch back, and ya could probably save even more.

Briar,
LOL, that reminds me of a story!
Back in about 1975 or 1976, I had a guy just drop a free dog off at my house. He was a stout built Treeing Tenessee Brindle. He looked like he would rather bite ya than sniff ya, but he was actually as mellow as they came.
Well, I had this ole Brindle dog named Bomber and a redbone named Captain. I had pictured our success of hunting the big timber north along the Ausable River in the Huron National Forest treeing big fat northern coons as easy as eating my grandmothers pie. Man were we going to tree a bunch of coons!!!!
My coon hunting vehicle of that time was a 1967 Pontiac Bonneville Stationwagon. This vehicle could only be described as a big huge boat.
My first drop of the night was calculated to a spot that had more coon sign than an old oak has acorns. It was along the high bank of the Ausable near a stairway with 208 steps down to the river's edge. The dogs and me made our way down the steep bank only to have the dogs head straight back up the hill. They were opening pretty good so the climb didn't seem to bad. By the time I hit the top of the ridge the sweat was stinging my eyes.
Wait a minute there in the middle of the two track was something dark, but I couldn't quite make it out until I rubbed the sweat back. It was Bomber standing there proudly wagging his tail with a black and white critter in his mouth. He was so proud! He then took his prize and shock it exactly 3 times and then threw it up in the air. He then froze with his eyes frozen on his new found toy. The second the critter moved he would grab it again and repeat the entire scenario.
Memory fails me to this day to realize just how many times that scene was repeated, but I am purty sure that ole skunk didn't have a drop of juice left. That sure cut our hunt fast!
Now here I am several miles from the cabin, my spirits deflated like a cheap grocery store blow up toy with one very proud and fragrant dog. I couldn't put those two dogs into the stationwagon so I was left with only one option. We had to walk back to the cabin.
It took quite some time to make the journey as I am sure my feet were dragging because I really wasn't looking forward to facing my dad. Man, I didn't even get close to the cabin and my father came flying out of there yelling. He made me strip right there! So here I am the triumphet hunter standing there with my free hound in my underware watching my dad burn my clothes.
To this day my dad never talks about my first big coon hunt in the northern woods of Michigan. He did say later my decision to walk home probably saved my life. Oh ya I was carrying his gun at the time ... he has neverquite forgave me for that one.
Briar, I didn't say there couldn't be challenges.

Larry,
better yet, hire me to hunt your dog and save yourself some money by buying me a new ford ranger. LOL
that is whats happening all across this country, everyone is just passing the added expense of higher fuel prices on down to us, the end user/consumer.
dont know if its true or not but was told that since the high gas prices have forced the people of indiana to buy less of it, the state is loseing millions in gas tax revenue and is considering raising the fuel tax to offset the lower demand. LOL
I have hunted off foot, bicycle, out of horse drawn vehicles, ford tractors, cars, station wagons, vans, mini vans, and all sorts of trucks. The horse issnt too cheap anymore either with hay and grain at all time highs.
I have found I save nothing buying $1000 trucks because they end up nickel and dimeing away anything i might save on fuel, on alternators, fuel pumps, starters and everything else. I am hopeful that this jalopy im driveing now will hold up without too much expense thru one more set of tires. And its hard to buy a new one without a job. And i absolutely hate that 7 letter cuss word "payment".
Why would a person, in their right mind want someone else to hunt their dogs?
There isnt a person on earth that I would trust with my dogs, besides me.

7 to 8 hundred don't seem out of line. Option two, record your miles @ .52 cents per mile and have them pay you $400 for kennel and hunting. I have always refussed to hunt anything but my own. I don't want it to seem like a job that I have to do.
