scratching for off game? just wondering

haven't had much trouble with this, usually you see a possum ,skunk, cat,or porky, or the 8 does the job. in the best scenario the handler has enough honor to handle the situation the right way!........but in the case of a dog obviously running fox, coyote, or deer, you knowe " hot fast and straight through the section in mostly open fields, does the hunting judge have the authority to just flatout scratch the dog?.........gr.nt. hound

Posted by john Duemmer on 04-21-2014 03:20 AM:

Yes he has the authority, the ? is does he have the B***s.

i would imagine

that when its done ,it starts some active discussion!

Posted by dixiedog on 04-21-2014 11:11 AM:

You do not have to see it. The rule says running , treeing or molesting off game. It does not say you have to see it. Yes I have scratched a Nite Ch dog for it. The guy took it back in to MOH and the scratch stayed after the MOH had read it in the rule book.

Posted by Mark V. on 04-21-2014 11:16 AM:

in less you can smell the track how do you know for sure? We have all run tracks that we was thinking that it may be junk and right when we getting ready to push the button they fall treed with the meat. Its hard to scatch a dog if you are not sure.

Posted by dixiedog on 04-21-2014 12:48 PM:

The cast I was on , we pull into a place to hunt and a deer jumps up and takes off. The dog that got scratched struck right where the deer jumped up and ran wide open across 2 county roads into the next section and the other 3 dogs struck a track in the woods we turned in and treed a coon. Now you tell me , you think the dog might of been running off game.

Posted by Autumn Clements on 04-21-2014 09:10 PM:

You do not have to see it.. Been there and been scratched before for off game without seeing it.
There is defiantly some situations that are questionable but there's others there's no doubt it's off game.

Yes sometimes it is most likely junk That not the times in ? but the other times that is might be is when I personaly have problems with scatching a dog.

Posted by bluetick250 on 04-21-2014 10:49 PM:

Prolly 90% of the hunts I've been the dogs ran deer or fox.I just stand there wondering why my dog ant barking. Then I realize I must have the only straight dog the cast.Sad that dog men put up with that crap all for 100 strike points.

Posted by blueghost on 04-21-2014 11:39 PM:

Most the time I get last strike to babbling dogs running opening on water and trash running man I've had a man get struck and look at me and ask if he had the only dog in the cast that would run a deer and I could have scratched him without seeing the deer?

Posted by Billy Beckham on 04-21-2014 11:50 PM:

So have you guys never had a coon run a straight line for a long distance. I've seen them cross empty bean fields more than once and I'm talking big fields.
The only guys that would scratch you are the ones looking for a easy CW.
I also would remember the judge in case he is ever in a cast that I'm judging.

Don't like the judges call ask for a vote. Otherwise cowboy and take your minus/scratch. If it is obvious enough for the judge to minus or scratch you prolly deserve it. I have been on a cast where we scratched a guys dog for running junk sight unseen. When you turn four Nitech's loose and only one dog strikes. Then proceeds to run wide open across plowed fields entering two different sections and the guide says we gotta call time out and catch that sucker he has already crossed three or four different peoples land that he doesn't have permissions for and is headed out of hearing, you deserve the scratch. He threw a big temper tantrum, but the scratch stood. Oh yeah and the advisor backs it up! Do you have to see a dog leave a tree to minus? Do you have to see a dog fight to scratch? Do you have to prove there isn't a track to minus for babbling? And on and on and on. Come on people! Judge makes the call, don't like ask for a vote, don't like the vote put a question mark, don't like the moh's answer...........

The night the dog got scratched on my cast was the judges dog and he never said a word about it. I have ran long tracks in January and February but not very often any other time . When a dog strikes 20 yards in the woods and you seen the deer jump up as we were pulling in and the dog crossed 2 county roads , through 3 sections of woods , across probably at least 4 stubble fields . I would say it was running junk, what you think. Anybody that has been at it awhile should be able to tell the difference , I would think.

So it's only scratch able if it's Ntch or Grnt?

Posted by CSnowgren on 04-22-2014 02:18 AM:

There are a lot of counties on this end of the state that if a dog gets between the coon and the patch of woods he likely came from, it can be a long haul to the next patch of woods through multiple corn or bean stubble fields. There are also enough deer to keep a guy guessing if he didn't know his hound inside and out. I could see a judge from another area jumping the gun on a scratch here.

kayapellijed390. That cast you are talking about wasn't at a Breed hunt a few years ago in Indiana , was it.

Yes. But you have special hunts like RQE's and mini slams where all dogs draw together, in this case a "Open" hound could be scratched also for off game.

This is a call that requires a high level of ability to judge dogs. Most don't have it. That is why this one is discussed on here 100 times more often than it is enforced on the woods.

I agree with Mark V.

You don't want to be to hasty on this. If it runs 2 mile plus as described yes scratch it. Just don't get too quick on doing it. I have saw deer just leaving the area and treed coon.

Better to be right than wrong, Jeff

dont want to scratch an innocent dog, BUT!By not doing so their is 3 others getting

cheated on that cast plus others in other casts!
