best feed?

Looking for opinions on what brand of feed everyone uses. These northeast winters are hard on our dogs. I just switched to DIAMOND BEEF & RICE. What is the prefered protein & fat percentages.

Best I have found for my hounds is 4 Health get it a TSC its good stuff ill feed it till there is nomore.

I live in Mi. (Cold) right now just as a maintenance issue I add 15-30% fat(beef)along w/8-12% protein(beef) that is in addition to the GA on the bag.
Fat contains twice the calories per gram as does protein or carbs.
Yes I feed a high fat(animal)diet.

i always feed diamond extreme athlete and when my dogs start losing weight i buy a few cans on canned mackerel and mix in a fish with each bowl of dog food and it really puts the weight back on them i dont care how hard u hunt one

The cold has been hard on my male. I ordered 500 pounds of black gold 24/20. They have been on it for about a week, dogs seem to like it. All see in a couple weeks if they put on any weight.

If everyone on here tried the 4 Health Performance blend 30/20 It will keep the meat on your hounds even when hunted hard ! I have made a lot of people believers in the 4 Health

I think Diamond Natural Extreme Athelete is the best food for your money. That is what I feed and my dogs do great on it, but I'd agree that the 4Health is a good feed too. Now if money is of no concern to you, then Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild are some of the best feeds you can buy. They are priced way too high for me though.

Victor good price very good feed native is also very good costs more I get victor for 28 a bag no corn wheat or gluten it also has at least three meat sources beef chicken pork and some also have fish I can't find any with that much animals in it

I have worked in the feed industry. I would not feed a diamond product to chickens, and yes even the extreme athlete. Ingredients are good, but to many recalls for non clean areas where they produce the food. That is why they have a lot of recalls for salmonella. I have fed all the different kinds of diamond products. If you go to t.s.c. and ask the sales associate who makes the 4 health line, if they are truthful they will tell you diamond. Also, The extreme athlete and the 4 health performance will have your hounds drinking 5 gallon of water a day. Again, I know that from experience.
I also try and feed a food that helps sponsor our hunts. I know some don't like to feed corn, wheat, and soy. I do agree somewhat. But, I feed dog chow, mixed with a can of tuna fish, which the tuna fish is cheap, and in turn gives you more meat in the food. I hunt 3-5 nights a week and my dogs hold up real well. Stools are firm too. (might be the tuna fish helping with the stools). Man, when we were coming up we fed table scraps and field trial and the dogs lived just as long and performed just as well. As, I stated above I know that purina has a lot of corn, wheat, and soy, but I do know that the corn, wheat, and soy they buy is the best out there on the market, and every other company gets the leftovers. If we as humans only ate chicken, or beef we probably would roll over with heart attacks by the age of 50. That's why we should eat more veggies. LOL. Shoot, we eat crap that aint good for us but we still perform on our jobs. Oh well, this is just my opinion.

Nathan, again I mix tuna fish in and WOW, you talk about eating well and holding up well, this MIXTURE WORKS!! I like your mixture as well but, I like to add the tuna for the added meat. *p.s. The tuna also ups the protein, and fat content.

When I can get meat scraps from the grocery buy the bulk.I mix in some to. This is the coldest winter we've had since I've keep dogs and all mine held up and looked wonderful. They never once acted cold and it would be -30 out at night

I like purina pro plan sport 30/20 dogs have never looked better. Was feeding dog chow and hunting 4-5 nights a week but when it got colder started getting a bag of pro plan sport and mixing it. They love it and keep weight, have a shiny slick coat, lots of energy, it's pricy but worth it.

Extreme Athlete is good feed for the money , ProPlan is good but high and the better formula's of Victor are good too ... they make a 40/30 ish that really makes them shine.

It's funny because most times we switch the feeds seem great at first , but then they kinda level off and we start to doubt it .... I am considering going back to ProPlan because I think it may be the best feed that over the long run keeps performing ... for whatever reason.

Best food I have fed in a long time American Natural Premium.Been feeding it 2 years feed original recipe 26/15 most of the year,feed endurance plus when we are bear hunting 32/20. Karl

To answer you original question, I believe the answer would be. Whatever each person is feeding their dogs at the present time and likes it. If you look at the answers on every "best dog food" thread most people like and defend the dog feed they are feeding. At the end of MOST of the threads it gets to be a food bashing match to how bad what one person feeds compared to what the other person feeds. To me feed what you want and like don't worry what another person likes and feeds. JMHO! Carry on.
