Silent Help

My female just turned a year old Nov. 1st and she is coming along nice. The only real problem she has is she is silent, I mean completely, until she sees the coon. The first time she treed she barked, but it was out of season on a turned loose caged coon. I didn't shoot it out because of the off season. Could this have set her back. I petted her up and praised her real good. Last night I after I cut her, I saw a coon run across a field and into a tree. Not long after my dog followed and after a few minutes found the tree. She would stand on the tree, but no matter what I did she wouldn't tree. I tried patting on it, scraping it with a stick, squalling, and even barking myself. Since she stood on the tree I went ahead and knocked him out. Once on the ground she started baying, and really let him have it after he grabbed ahold of her. I then hung the dead coon in a tree where she could see it. She barked treed on it a little. Should I turn one loose in the day so she can see it climb, or just keep hunting her and hope she just clicks one day. I don't think I'm gonna knock any more out if she doesn't bark treed, or should I? I need help please, this pup has tons of potential. She is the most well mannered dog I have been in the woods with, never use a leash except to tie at the tree. Walk to truck say load and she jumps right up and in her box, and not an ill hair on her. Please give me some ideas.

Then that's what you might do; leash her to the tree, walk back to the truck and say load. If she hasn't barked to remind you by then, go back and do the other things you had been doing. Some young dogs are exceptionally tight mouth when the don't know what they're doing. But if she starts making alot of noise because you're gone, it MIGHT dawn on her it's ok to make noise while you're around. Since she enjoys the taste of fur keep giving it to her while she's young. Last half of the season you might start playing mind games with her once you know that she knows what's going on but just won't do it.

Don't turn out in the daytime to see one climb, they want to tree by sight.

I'm with you on lack of a leash, but they must be good for something. But it's not for leading a dog around on!

I've found that pups that go crazy on a hangup coon they already killed are a little on the stupid side and just sight barking.

Sometimes you can catch a coon in a cage , find a huge field i mean huge turn coon loose with pup watching, let coon get plum out of sight almost to the woods or fence lines some were it can climb turn pup loose, I have had really good luck out of this making a pup open, most will ,some don't

my male does the same thing except he will be completly silent on track no matter how hot the track and all of a sudden blow the top off a tree and you know hes treed everytime he barks hes real chop mouthed but for everything i try he is REALLY tight mouthed on track so when i comp hunt him i guess im just gonna call him struck and then treed right after another

i wouldnt quiet knocking them out to her so far that is
the only time you have got her excited.Years ago i took
a dog to a training pen he came back so mouth it took
a yr to get back to his self.i thank in that atmosphere
coons get on top of the fence and run around it making
dogs mouthie.

Thanks guys. I'll keep knocking them out to her. Hopefully she runs one and can see him climb, maybe then she will start to use her mouth. She just doesn't seem to like to bark too much except when she sees a coon. It's kinda hard hunting her when she is silent though. I guess I'll just start walking the woods looking for her if she isn't back after a while to see if she is treed. It wouldn't be so bad if I had a garmin, then I could see when she is stationary and walk in to her. I think she will come around eventyally.

I don't think I'd knock anymore out to her untill she actually treed on it. What you might try to do is find another hunter you can hunt with and when their dog trees if she's there and not treeing tie her back and knock the coon out to the other dog and just ignore her. Do this again till she starts treeing I wouldn't think it would take her to long to figure it out.

i had a similar situation on a pup and i ended up shootin a coon just right and it climbed back down the tree right in her face..it was blind luck but from then on she was a TREEEE dog..see if you can shoot around one or shoot it in the leg or something to get it to climb back down in her face. might not work on all of em but man it worked on her. like i said before i found this out by accident and i havent had to try it since then.

Hobo I like your idea. I think I'll try it a few times before I let her have anymore. Maybe she is spoiled by getting the coon and not barking for it. It couldn't hurt to try it anyway. Thanks guys.

We had one that did the same thing, it seemed like no one could get her over it, I guess it was really more luck than anything, but one day we turned a cage coon loose for her, and it climbed up a tree right next to a telephone line. When we shot it, it fell out of the tree and hung on that line for around a minute or two, and she hasnt had that problem since.

Seeing one come down sounds like has some merrit.

"Seeing" one go up won't do anything but keeping on doing the same old thing. It sounds like she has "seen" too much of a coon in a cage and "seen" the other one climb.

If you want a sight treeing dog why don't you train her on squirrels? If you want her treeing hound style, you might want to "blindfold" her and get her working off scent. If she aint caught on to working off scent, she is not coming along as good as you think.

No offense to the squirrel dogs, I know they do it both ways!

We have one of those silent dogs too.

She's a year old as well and hardly opens on track. She trees well and is a good chop mouth but just quiet on track. The loudest we EVER heard her on track was when she had a bobcat! LOL There are a couple of bloodlines out there that produce some of these silent track dogs. They are hard to competition hunt for certain but dosen't make them any less a coondog.

treeing cage coon

i believe this is a good way to get a dog started,but after fooling with them on a cage let the coon loose and let it get away out of sight for a few minutes then let the pup loose it will help them use there nose then when treed shoot it out this should be a big help. as being silent on track a lot of dogs are breed to be silent with the breeding people are doing these days you need to hunt with the parents of your pup if possible before you buy it or talk to others who have hunted with them if you can this is still no garantee your pup will bark on track but might help to know .

hobo has the right way even on a semi silent hound thats been this way it will make them open up.

does the dog bark at home? I had a female that if she had a collar on would not bark. take them off and shed tree, I think a auto bark collar ruined her.

I like Hobo's idea too. That is the first thing I'd try. I don't think the problem is her nose or her mouth. It's her age! She just doesn't have the maturity and experience it takes to make her mind and mouth trust her nose yet. She has to see it to confirm what her nose already told her before she believes it. Just keep getting her in the woods and giving her plenty of chances to let her learn that her nose is telling her the truth. With Hobo's technique you are doing this without teaching her to be lazy and that she can have the coon even without barking. She'll learn quick that if she wants to get in on the fun of fighting the coon she better bark when her nose tells her there's one there.

hobo's idea does work i had a kid from tn. visiting his grandmother for the summer he saw me coon hunting one night and asked if he could go along, my female english was semi silent but had a mouth that was as loud as the loudest mouth i think she figured it out if she tracked silent she could catch them on the ground. well any how this kid says to me hunt her with another hound and when they tree tie her back shoot the coon out and don't let her go in to the coon. i tried it and she went beserk did it the rest of the night and from that day till now she opens real good on track whether it's hot or a cold track. this hound turned 9 years old and still beats the dogs to the tree. one night i had 5 first trees and 5 first strkes with her hunting with 3 gr nite champions and 2 pups.
i realy think most hounds with strong hunt in them can be made better by figuring ways to make them better and also think many give up to easy when there hounds have problems'
recently an english female made world champion and at one time she was considered to be culled new handler made her world champion

l.lyle yes she did real good on the squirrel. Plottchaser I think you are right. I turned her loose by herself on a red hot track last night, and she actually opened on track, only a few times but hey its a start. After about 1/2 hr. of her going back and forth I started looking in tree tops. I found a coon in one and sure enough she kept going to. It was hard to do, but she didn't tree it so she didn't get it. I waited a while longer and she would circle the tree, jump on it, walk away about 10 feet, and come back to do it all again. I am sure she just isn't confident in her nose, and isn't sure what to do. I'm gonna try Hobo's idea I think it might work.

Hobo's got the right idea. She sounds smart so she should figure out how the treeing thing works real quick. One more thing I wouldn't show her any more caged coon if I were you. The only coon she needs to see are the ones that fall out of the tops of trees. Caged coon and shock collars haved ruined their share of potential great hounds.
