when I think of a dog "hating" a coon I think of them being scared of a coon ... a dog that likes to get in and get ahold of the fur I say they like coon

Id say it depends on the dog, some hounds wont fight a coon, some live to fight either a coon or anything that Hackles in front of it. its just natural for a hound to persue and hold at bay. Does a Bay dog Hate a Russion Boar ? why does he ? does the Boar hate him ? why does he ? the Boar will Cut what ever gets in his way with his razer Tusk. Why is that ? naturaly if he feals threatend from somthing he will defend his self.

This is Interesting when I first started my dog he had to fight his but off with a coon now he just works around to the back of the neck or head and when its done just walks away I think its just a natural instinct to Kill we just turn them in the direction of a certain smell. But he seems to enjoy Hating them

I think the Hate, Because Most Coondogs will Kill a Coon, and not eat it, so it would be an act of hatred, or atleast a hatefull pridjudice towards a Coon.

It isn't about "loving" or "hating" a coon!

Dogs don't reason at that level - their brains don't work that way. Imagine, if your skull stopped at your eyebrows?? do you think you'd be able to comprehend the difference between loving or hating a coon?

So, I would offer that what any hound does have instead is a KILL DRIVE... driven by movement (for a sighthound) or scent (for a scent hound) and that drive is on a deep, genetic level.

In other words, your old hound - the same one that lets the baby roll on him on the floor, sits next to you in the truck, and will lay down it's life for your wife, is indeed at a base level a killer when he's hunting.

we all know about those passionate love//hate relationships! LOL
coonhounds are very passionate dogs. sometimes its hard to tell love from hate. when you see a young pup lock onto that scent and get all excited and start moaning and whimperig about it, it sure looks a lot like love. but, when it gets there and the coon starts spitting and hissing it turns to something that looks a lot like hate pretty quick!
whichever one you choose to call it, its sure passionate!
