Weekend scouting trip & close encounter

Saturday was a nice day to be out and about. I was scouting for bow season next year, and found myself at a small funnel between hardwoods and 2 swamps.

I stepped to the edge of the funnel to see a large coon working the hardwood/swamp edge to my left. Hmmm it was 1:00 pm, and that was a nice coon. After that coon disappeared I see movement to my right, and there are two more nice coons. Then I see a quick movement near some open water. I'll be darn if it wasn't a large otter. I stood there and watched something I would have never guessed would happen. That otter started stalking those 2 coons. The otter had closed the distance, and he made his move. The coons simply went up the nearest tree. The otter watched the coons for a minute or two then turned its attention back to the water. The otter ended up working its way to within 6-7 feet away from me before I interrupted his day. After all that the coons simply made their way down the tree and back tracked to where they came from. A cool encounter all the way around!

I love spending time in the woods like that.
