new coonhunter

I've started doing some hunting in the past year and a half or so. Hunting with some knowledgeable guys that have been around a while doesn't hurt either. Recently bought a english hound and from what ive read he may turn out. I hope so! My first one didn't turn out so well.

I'm posting to ask for more advice on what should be done with starting a new pup. He's 3 months old and I'm anxious to get in the woods. Can i get some tips on what needs to be done? I've gotten alot of advice from the guys i hunt with. Just wanted more wisdom on what i should be doing.

Let him be a puppy but teach him to mind and handle first. Loading, unloading, and walking on a lead are all very important. I've got two that can tree a coon but the compliments I get on the way they handle make me proud. Don't forget to reward good behavior with small treats( hotdog weinie cut into small chunks, cheese crackers, etc). Start walking him in the woods in the daytime and let him smell around, cross streams and logs, and such as he will encounter in the woods. I don't take mine into the woods at night until 6 months of age or so. The main thing is don't expect your pup to do an adult dogs job.
