Need a little advice.

I have a couple of bluetick hounds that when they come across a track they will run it and tree. The problem I am having is that they do not like to range out too far. If they do not find anything, they check back in. They have been walked behind in the past. Is there any way to break them of this. I am hunting them alone most of the time. I carried a switch with me last night. Everytime the dog checked in and stood around I switched him and told him to go hunt. It did not take him long to realize he better get going. I have not ran him with any other hound besides his littermate. I have tried to run the other hound with other dogs, but he does not act like he cares much. He will run with them for awhile and then will come back and check in. These dogs will move a track pretty decent, and tree well, they know what a coon is and they hate them. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to get these hounds to range out? Thanks, Scott

I would hunt them with a dog that goes a little deeper and maybe they will learn to hunt deep with him. I think part of a dog's hunting style is the way the dog is bred and part of it is how the dog was trained. While I don't care for a dog that I have to walk over a track to get them to tree a coon, but a dog that hunts 20-30 minutes and checks back in or one that hunts consistantly the area I am walking through suits me these days. I have some go yonder dogs that I sit on the tailgait until they tree but sometimes, they go a little further than I wish they would. I think switching them lightly will help.

Thanks Redtick

Redtick,
The dogs' sire is a comp dog, and will go, go, go. I will continue to hunt them with some other hounds. It seems like when you hunt my two hounds together they will range out a little farther. They will go hunt for about 15 to 20 minutes and then come back and will not go again until you walk a little farther down the way. I have been trying to break them of this habit. Thanks for the info.
