Actually Coonhounds are there ?
The hound that I saw working was a Walker.
The blokes that I was out with actually mentioned ' silent hounds' while we were out and that only spoke when they'd treed the coon. The Walker obviously gave tongue whilst it was working the coon before it was treed.
Which type of hound is the most popular of the two. I take it that being silent is a trait that just came naturally at some time and has since been developed by breeders of the dogs over the years. Am I right in saying that this is something that can't be trained for ?
I'm keen to learn and appologise for asking such basic questions.
Here is a link http://www.coondawgs.com/breeds.html that shows the 6 major breeds of open trailing coonhounds.
There are some hunting dogs called Mountain curs, that as you said are silent trailers. you are correct, a dog giving tongue or not on the trail can't be trained, that's genetic. No stupid questions here, you'll find lots of folks happy to help.
Where at in Wales are you from? My wife grew up there in Wrexham.
About 80 or so miles away from Wrexham on the Lleyn Peninsula.
My nearst town is about 7 miles away, its called Pwllheli. Your wife should be able to pronounce it.
