How do YOU measure success?

I have been approached twice this week by folks who bought dogs from me as puppies, to tell me that the dog had finally died of old age. Both from the same litter.

Not 1 pup from that litter, and only 1 from the only other litter I ever raised from that female, ever got a night hunt degree. As I got to adding it up though, over 1/2 of her pups were kept by the origenal person who bought them as pups till they died. With only 2 alive now, still with there origenal owners.

Most of these dogs live long lives and made lots of people nice enough hounds they died in there pens.

I had gotten caught up in the # of her pups who made ntch, and had decided she didn't reproduce very well. Never gave much thought to the pleasure hunters who feed those dogs to a ripe old age and never entered a hunt.

It really made my day to think of all the nice hounds, and all the good nights of huntin these guys had because I put those dogs togather in a breeding pen. More so that the guy who called years ago to tell me the 1 made ntch.

It was sort of nice to think her sons and daughters made there place in other peoples kennels for life. That doesn't happen as much in today's world where everything has a price.
