Yep what he said
Just make sure you're not surprising him when you reach in to grab him. Talk to him, let him know you're coming. Then if he does it again, you need to put a knot on his head.
i would get rid of him,i think its bred in dogs to do that.be careful about reaching for his bowl when hes eating.
seriously lmao right now........remembering a cast......PKC one in fact..several yrs ago......when a well known dog (not gonna name him cause I didn't own him) grabbed a cast member just south of holy hanna hahaha
it wasn't funny at the time......got real heated real fast.......but I cant think of it now without laughing
the pkc rep we got on the phone.....think it was Leroy gamble......told us that there was no rule on a dog biting a person but it had bitten another dog that would be different.......
last pkc hunt I ever entered

Sometimes
Sometimes they get so zoned into the desire to get that coon the eyes will roll back and they are so into it they will grab when startled especially if they have had some coon shot down and are conditioned kill dogs. I had a nice English female wouldnt harm a flea never fought never run a dog off the tree. She would tree so hard her eyes would roll back and she had a habit of grabbing a low limb or grapevine. One night I walked in and leaned on the tree to look up and she grabbed my arm like a vine. I always spoke to her from then on when I came into the tree or reached to leash her up and she was fine after that. I know other guys that have to do that with their dogs. I would just watch to make sure he doesnt facebark or grab at other dogs at the tree. Like I said she knew the routine and the reward for treeing was she couldnt wait to grab that coon was part of her nature. When other dogs were with her she was aware they were there and no problem but alone she did the grab the limb or vine thing. Good luck

rdmedders, teach your dog to come off the tree to you, problem solved.when you get to the tree, say about eight feet, call his name ,then here.the e-collar works wonders for this.i just used the tone button and mine caught on real fast.i have two dogs now and both will come off to me for me to leash them.saves you from other aggressive problems at the tree.
i'm sure you startled him and he was thinking it was the coon. Let him know what you are doing by saying HERE when you leash him or stand back a few feet and call him to you
22 shells are hard to come by. I'll send you some. He won't bite again. A biting dog, a kicking horse or a cheating woman never has a home.
A friend of mine used have a dog that would bite you while he was treeing if didnt talk to him first before you leashed him. He wasn't mean at the tree or anything. I think it was because of all the excitement.
Thanks for all the help!

A lot of variables can go into this, like tapping tree, petting a dog the wrong way. I've seen dogs like this. Best way to fix them is let them know you are there verbally and when you go to lease try to grab behind his head just below the back of his head. This will keep a dog from nibbling at you

Re: Opinions
quote:Doug,,,,I agree. That's the most stupid response in general. I have hunted several radical tree dogs,,,,,not mean at all. Just zoned out and treed hard. Just let em know your bout to handle them. The 22 bullet training method is for the most part for folks that have no business owning a hound to begain with !

Thats the trouble with message boards opinions are like a-holes everybody has one.
If the dog has never bit and bit out of excitement this time do what these guys are saying and give it a chance to see. If he has in fact got mean under the tree I would never stand for a mean dog and has to be dealt with. Just tell that guy to send ya the 22 shells and we will split them, he wont need them cause he dont sound like a hunter or dog man to me!!LOL!

Try this, When you are at home and your dog is out in the yard with you and the kids playing.Grab him around the mouth with your right hand. Cover his muzzle, roll him over on his back and squeeze his mouth till he whimpers . When he starts whimpering stop and pet him. This will let him know you are dominant. Good luck.
i had a red dog that would bite a stranger at the kennel and at the tree as lomg as i was there he was fine didn't have to worry about somebody takin him never did try to bite a kid but a growin adult stranger he disn't like
Btt

Ive seen several dogs this way. Myself id smack the feed out of them if mine tried it. My buddy has one and i hate gettin mine off the tree with her. You have to watch them though cause the ones ive seen all have been a lil ill around the tree with other dogs. Im not talkin about jump on a dog type but face bark and toe bite dogs which starts fights.

My grandpa had an english male several years ago that was a radical tree dog never seen another on like it a few times the dog would tree so hard that he would fall down and try to keep treeing layin on his side...if it took a long time to get to him...but you could not leash him on the tree no matter what you did he would try to eat you up finally pap made a long choke lead would walk up behind him drop it over his head and yank him off the tree after you got him off the tree he was fine
