What are you thoughts on 'no-bark' collars?
I've thought about purchasing a No Bark collar before, the E collars that discourage a dog from barking in the pen. Based upon your personal experience, do you think these types of collars negatively affected your dog's hunting ability, or caused any kind of confusion?
Thank you,
Noah

I have used both the tri-tronics and sportdog models of these. I have not observed any issues with hunting. I was leary of using them, but since I live in a neighborhood I felt it was my best option to respect my neighbors.
I typically use them on young dogs and they are smart enough to understand it is only used in the pen...by the time they have worn it 3 to 6 months I can quit using it. They may need an occasional day back in it as a refresher....

I would not own most hounds without having a bark collar available. Barking makes me madder than anything and if I get a real barker the damage I do to the relationship I have with the dog for barking in the kennel will far outweigh any damage a bark collar will do. Dogs I have had have been smart enough to know when the collar is on their neck and when it isn't. Believe it or not (I still don't know if I do) I once had a dog that I really believed could tell if the shock collar was on or off. They know the difference between barking at the house and barking when hunting. I have a short list of things I just can't stand about a dog that I kennel....welded wire, barrel houses, concrete floor, cheap buckets and feed dishes and bark collars fixes 90% of these problems.

Dog or pup?
I have used them a lot over the years and I will no longer put one on a pup that isn't to the point of being what I consider to be well started. Generally, that will be 14-16 months or older but nothing is written in stone, they are all different. But I will no longer use one on a pup. Done it a lot and this where I'm at with it now. I know plenty others see it differently.
For mature dogs, I never seen the bark collar cause any problems at all.
The problem is you still got this kennel barking pup and what do you do? Man, I hate having to run out and put a thrashin on one every time they light it up.
Almost all will bark when go out to load them or at feeding time so that is when you tackle the problem. You're out there anyway. A major dose of corporal punishment will usually fix this problem effectively. I don't have a problem with a dog that is AFRAID to kennel bark. Fear has it's place, believe it or not.
In the end, nothing I have ever done to a dog to shut it up was 1/10th as bad as what happens to them when the animal cops haul them to the pound for being a public nuisance.

I agree with everyone here. I use them on both of my dogs and has not changed there hunting habits at all. When I go hunting I take them off while on the tailgate before they go in the box. When we get back I put them both back on and none the wiser. My last set of batteries lasted a year and a half because they never bark and use it.
One of the best investments I have made. I use the pet safe one's from Wal-Mart and never had any issues.

Something to think about and wonder how it can help.
Garmin with have the Delta Sport out next month and it will be the first e-collar that you can also swap over to a bark collar.
Lots of possibilities with this system. It also has auto intensity for the problem dog.
Guys that don't want babbling dogs think what you can do turning them loose with a bark collar on and after their nonsense has been knocked out of them you can turn the bark control off and use it as a correction collar. It will shock and vibrate.
Think about when you load them. Turning the bark collar on and you don't have to worry about having your finger on the button waiting to shock one.

My dog has worn one since he was 8 months old or so...he is in a kennel down on the edge of the pasture...cats, horses, cows, people pass by it all day...that'll drive any dog juts that just wants out...
Doesn't effect him at all...hunting wise....
Its almost always on him and when its not I switch right to the tracking collar...
He started barking in the truck...a ride with it on fixed that...now if he barks i can yell and he is done...and it s usually a coon when he does now going down the road..

Here's what I know. I've tried every single one made besides a sportdog. So I don't know about it but otherwise. Get the Dogtra 500. None of the others are even in a league with it. Only time I've saw it nearly affect one. A Feller turned his out and forgot to take it off lol.

The one's I bought from Wal Mart have auto intensity levels built in. Even when excited my dogs might go three barks. I think alot of it is how hard headed the dog is and how much it is used to E-collars in general. I do not care where it is or what it is but if either of my dogs here there collar beep they correct what ever it is they are doing. I just installed an invisible fence and they will not go close to the boundary. The collar beeps and they back up.
Both of my dogs were two years old when I got them and required very little training. Like alot of other people dogs barking in the lot get on my last nerve however I also understand they are dogs and will bark.

Im with jim.Its tough for pups but i wont listen to one bark in the kennel. Biggest problems ive seen are either with pups too young to understand or with people that leave em on too long or too tight. Can make an awful mess.Generally anything ive had even a month learns real quick. most of the rest aint bright enough to make it thru the rest of the training anyway lol.

so whats the solution to the ones that bark thru them? and know they are doing as they are squalling when they do. Ive used the innotec and the sportdog nobark 6, new batteries, and he still barks thru it. everyone else is pretty well collar broke.

size 10 works for me. I want em quiet cause they know they aint allowed to be barkin in the pen not because they know they are wearin the collar. just my own preference.

The only thing that worked for me on those that are hard headed and bark through a no bark collar or shock collar etc is a muzzle. The one I used was nothing fancy, made out of leather adjustable straps, 1 strap around muzzle, 2 straps from the muzzle strap on each side of jaw going back to a neck strap, and 1 strap from the muzzle strap going back on top of the muzzle and head, to the neck strap. Neck strap has a loop extending back at the top that you can put another collar through it if they try and pull it off.

Personally I either wouldn't own it, or I would stop it one way or the other. Its just unacceptable and if a dog is too dumb to learn to stop barking in the pen its likely too dumb to learn much else.
When I get a dog where its bad habits outweight its ability, the dog is just not for me.

I think every dog ought to learn a lesson about never barking in a pen. But, you can't always be home to yell kick or beat them. As puppies you don't want them to be man shy so the bark collars work great. And older dogs no problem at all. I had a dog that lived with one for 10 years and never killed him but he knew what it was for. You will ruen a good women with a barking dog. and if you live in town you will spend way more in fines then a collar will cost you.

You can get two stronger colored contact points for the Tri tronics bark limiter. At least you could when I got mine. They work.
