night of dissapointment

well, yesterday i had gotten a phone call and was invited to take my pup out with a seasoned bluetick. talk about the excitement to actually take skeet out with another dog. got the phone call in the am, and man, the excitement was too much. had to do somethin, so i split about 2 cords of wood, made lasagna, cleaned the house, etc. so the evening came. got another call, the place they were goin to take me fell through, so bein me, i made a call and got permission to take them to the spot i have been goin. packed skeet up, went to country fair to get a couple sodas, got a call. mind you i am already 15 miles from the house. "why cant ryan go, he was your huntin buddy the other night and it is not fair" is what i got from the dad. i told him it was up to his brother because it was his dog. well the family got into a HUGE FIGHT on the phone and all of a sudden i am the bad guy. go figure. i was sittin in a grocery store parkin lot at this time and i just told them i was goin home. like a girl i cried. oh well.
at this point, after tryin so hard to get sound advice from anyone and tryin so hard, i figured skeet and i are on our own. i just hope i dont let this pup down. trying to get anyone to take us under their wing is like pullin teeth. so i am DONE WITH EVERYONE. i will reread the wick book i have , i will read relevant posts, but i will never put any more faith in anyone but my dogs. they are the most loyal friends i have. i will let skeet tell me what to do next.
thank you everyone for the advice

Hang in there, Kell. Your day will come. I learned the hard way that you are better off to hunt a young dog by itself. From reading some of your earlier posts about Skeet, it sounds like he will run a track and tree by himself. Keep him in the woods and when gets to being a coondog, you will have people calling you all the time to go huntin. For now, find someone to go along with you so that you're not out there by yourself. Good luck with Skeet and just be patient and persistent.

Hun, not sure how far away you are from me, I live in the center of the state. But you are more then welcome to bring that blue dog down and go out with me and my buddies. I have 2 finished dogs, a nitech and just a regular coondog and a yr. old pup I run with them. We can tree coon all night! My phone number is at the bottom of this post and I'm Lori, Frank is the other half!

I know what you mean Kelly. When I first started hunting (and even now sometimes) I often had a hard time finding someone to hunt with, especially someone that had a broke dog. I was often a little disappointed, but now that I have a decent dog of my own I can see where they were coming from a little better. I know I've made a couple folks angry because I wouldn't offer to take them hunting with me, but after the money I spent and the time I put into fixing a couple issues on my "good" dog I'm leery of hunting her with dogs that are inexperienced. Just a precaution on my part-I don't even hunt my own young dogs with her. As someone else mentioned, I find that I get better results hunting my dogs alone for the most part. These days I rarely take young or green dogs with me when I hunt with anyone else, unless I know they're absolutely ok with it. Just a courtesy I try to go by.

Good luck with your young dog. I hope he'll be doing great for you soon!

I have learned to hunt alone because of mean dogs and just not being anyone to hunt with around. You get used to it. Just hang in there and your dog will come a round when it is time. It is also much easier not to form bad habits when hunting one alone. Get you a place to hunt and put up a couple of feeders til you pup get going good and then start hunting wild coon so he wont be looking in the same spot every time for the varmit.

This whole process doesn't seem to be much fun at all. When starting a pup has me breaking down and crying I will find something else to do with my leisure time. Just take the go the the woods, cut it out and see what happens. Stop stressing, just pretend your takeing a walk, listen for the dog, and let it work. All the worrying, planning, and thinking about what your doing won't make one dang bit of difference.

Sad to say, but until you get a pup with all the tools and it just "starts" you won't be able to appreciate how easy the whole process can be. Commitment to a dog at all cost is the absolutely most frustrating thing a aspiring coonhunter can ever do. It takes work, but it should be enjoyable.

Your dad gave you the best advise you will ever get. Ever dog is differant and nobody knows your dog like you do. So the more ideas you get to try the better off you are but you will be the best to decide what is best to do on your dog. EVERYONE will look at your dog once and tell you just what it needs or tell you how the old timers did it but the thing about how the old timers did it is dogs have changed, equipment has changed and there has been new and better things learned. Study scent how it works, scent dogs and how they track. There are lots of books on it. NOT ALL coon hunting but like your dad said doesn't matter what kind of scent how a hound finds it is what you need to learn about. Good luck.

dear briar,
it is enjoyable, the process, it is just the people that make it difficult.
thank you

I can remember when I started coon huntin'. We had some boo-tick pups and we would walk them up the Edisto River as may times a week as we could. Right at dark, when it started cooling off..... we let them play and smell around. They walked on fallen trees from one side of the river to the other.....just learning. We also worked them on hides....and when they caught on ~ put two and two together ~ and left us standing on the bank of that river .... WOW! We could hear them on the other side telling there story for the whole world to hear......well, lets just say money couldn't buy that feeling!

Keep your chin up honey! If you don't give up, the hounds won't either!

I had that happen to me when I was 12. I pedled my bicycle home in the pouring down rain, cussing for every daggum, son of a gun, no-acount, thing I was worth. When the weather got decent we hunted a good bit, him and his dog what's head looked more like a possum than a dog. After that cussin, I don't know why he took me. I was to take his grandson for his first time last year, I think I was lookimg forward to it as much or more than the boy but it came a sleet and freezing rain and when I got to his house I had to put him off. I recon I wished I had a Granddaddy like him to help me work it out.
