Every female is different. The ovulation test is the best way to figure it out. My Ticket female is always the 13th day.

Posted by Family on 04-27-2010 03:07 PM:

The semen lives in the gyp for atleast 24 hours after hitting it... so the 9th ,11th, 13th gets it done.
24 hours after hes in there the stuff is alive.
the test is the best way to go if you didnt catch her the first day or two.
I have a female that takes and has pups the 14-16th day...seems like she comes in forever in the beginning.

the test is cheap and most stud dog owners have a vet on the way to there house that they use and have a relationship with, just ask em where and stop in on the way to the studs house, by me its 20$ to check and doc calls me and tells me and they will tell you right there on the spot.

JMO ----

If I am breeding to my own stud, I try her the 9th day. If I have to drive a ways to someone elses stud, I will be there the 11th day and have a room booked just incase it doesn't happen. I drove one day from MN to MI and she didn't want a thing to do with him, next morning she was "in love" with him and I had a very nice litter of pups. Could have been the long ride--different surroundings--I was just glad that I didn't turn around and come back home.

Like any "female", they are all different and you just have to work with THEM!

My only experience with this was when I had my female AI'd. She was progesteron tested until it was the right time which was the 19th day after the first sign of blood. If I had gone by all the other standard choices, I prolly wouldn't have gotten pups. Without a test to determine ovulation, you are likely just going on a hope and a prayer.

in S.C. them test are very expensive they are $80 a test i asked why so high here and not in other states vet said we are not a dog state like IN.,MICH.,ILL,ETC. i called everywhere in S.C. that was the cheapest i found and most wouldnt even mess with it.i wanted to artificial breed a gyp it was going to be a small fortune, you dont even want to know the cost for that down here....

Wow, Family, just $20.00???? Here it is $35.00 and they want you to come in on the 8th and every other day until they say go. Last time it cost me over $100.00. Ya just have to love some of these vets.

The 12th day has always worked well for me, but all my females have heat cycles that you can set a clock by.

Rural America. Its the only way to go.

Just tell the vet what day I believe the female is in her cycle and he will tell me what the cells look like compared to the day I've told him....so yeah it looks right shes comin in ...or she looks real good now....or she looks like she is goin out....based on the condition of the cells.

I think comin in and goin out look similiar...maybe thats why they want you to come back so often, to make sure its not an in and out type of cycle. but that she actually is "in"

I think most guys know how there females cycle..I had one guy tell me the 12th day is the only day and he knows it and will be countin.

Most folks breed too early .... those days yall are quoting are the days when eggs first drop.

Eggs can take several days to all drop , and then they are good for a week.

Breed as few times as possible ... every extra hang-up introduces more bacteria and germs into the gyp.

15-20 Days is alot better time to let them hang once , and maybe once more in 24hrs.

Spreading out those breedings just increases the chance for runts ... runts are pups that come from eggs that didn't fertilize as soon as the rest.

Runts are typically just a pup from the latter breedings that is born "early" ... they can also come from weak semen.

Posted by John D on 04-27-2010 09:08 PM:

Forget about counting days. Counting days caused me to breed too early, 2 different times and not a pup either time. Both times the female wouldn't stand on the "right day" so we AI'd her. It turned out they knew better than we did when the right day was.

Instead, I just let the stud owner know the time was getting near, and cleared my schedule. Because, when she is ready to go, she is ready to go and it might not always be convenient.

Check her every day with a male dog, any kind of male. If its one that will mount her, thats even better. If the female stands like a statue, with her tail off to one side, she is ready. Go breed her the next day for a one time breeding. Don't wait for the weekend or for when you put in for time off from work.

If she jumps away, wants to play, puts her rump to the ground or clamps her tail down, she's not ready. There are some females that are an exception to this, but not many.

Ideally, its better to take the female and leave her a few days with the stud owner. Breed her as soon as she'll take a male and every other day until she won't. This way you do a better job of getting high quality sperm around the eggs at the right time and increases the chances for more pups. With more pups, you have the opportunity to cull harder...

Wow!!

I'm going to stick with the old school on this one. Having offered to the public two studs that have serviced 40 or more females, I have always relied on the female to say when it is time. With that being said, I have found that most females will not stand on day 9 or never have they here and most will accept a male on the 11th thru 15 th day. Timing is always on the female owner and sometimes thier timing is wrong. When that happens, expect to stay a day or two or leave the female and pick her up after she is bred. If I'm going to AI a female, the 13th day works out the best her at my kennel. Just one note, a strong studs semens has been known to alive inside a female for 5 days. If semen is only living for 24 hours, your stud needs some help and quick. Good luck!!

This is a load of bs. call any vet I've never heard of semen living in a female for 5 days. thats why they breed everyother day to keep the semen around the eggs that are dropping.

The strongest semen Known to live at the highest rate of survival from a frozen thaw. Meaning the toughest conditions semen is ever put through a test by man or beast is "stylish harry and his offspring". call once frozen in Oklahoma and ask them. we will be breeding to some of that next time around.

WOW! these folks really let there heads get in the way of facts.."semen is known to live for 5 days"...bs. the good ol days have made ya senial

Semen

Firemam Sam Danny is correct. Good strong semen from a Young healthy stud has been kown to live in the female for more than 5 days.

ok his attitude seemed a lil off, we have bred dogs for 40 years and always have heard it was best to breed every other day.

why would we do it that way and have perfect results if one time was all that was needed galaxyman?

we have a bitch booked to family's Rube dog and know he has high quality sperm, Tim gave us two different vets to call that they use and I can use when we come down to missouri. I think the last litter had 10 pups the way they are doing it now.

danny just came off as a putting down someone else. When I have a litter of pups riding on my breeding we have always done it the old fashion way and breed every other day she stands starting around 9,10 days.

always someone bitching about someone elses opinion. when we all get the same results.

so one time is all it takes galaxy man? since the eggs will drop down when they want to healthy sperm?
