Sonny bred english dogs
Anyone hunting sonny bred dogs? If so what is your opinion of them?
I have seen alot of Sonny bred dogs that were tree dogs. Most of them were a little too tight on the track, a little too hot nosed, and didn't have the big mouth to suit me. Others may see it differently, they may be perfect to them. I have seen a few that liked to tree alot, more than they needed to, but that could be a training error.

I have hunted with some that I liked. I have a little Sonny blood in a young dog I'm hunting now. The ones I have hunted with are hard going, tree dogs and seem to be very good track dogs. I haven't noticed them being any more tree happy than any other line.
Stanley Nichols has a hound named Nichols Tree Spike that is Sonny bred. He is throwing some very nice pups, Main Street Roy, the Ky PKC leader is out of him. From what I have seen out of his line there are no average dogs, either they are world beaters or not much. Seems like there are a lot more good ones than duds though. I like them and would seriously consider one if I were to switch to the English breed.

I've hunted some Sonny bred dogs here in the past year. I had a littermate brother to the Main Street Roy dog of Stanley's. I've hunted with Roy one night and nothing looked exceptional that night including mine. But what can you expect on 2 feet of snow with ice underneath and about 10 degrees? Spike dogs are definately TREE DOGS! The ones I've had and the ones I've hunted with will also absolutely go hunting. The littermate to the Roy dog I had was not tight on the ground at all. If anything he opened too much on the ground. From what I've seen that's the fault on some of these Spike dogs. Lee Ballard from Liberty, Indiana has got a good female off old Spike that's won a couple thousand in PKC. I had been hunting one off Spike II that's a nice young dog he's got about 90 dollars in PKC.
If anybody out there knows anything else about these dogs. I'm thinking of crossing some of these Sonny (Spike) females in on some Captain Kool breeding. Let me hear your opinion. Everyone but REDTICK! LoL Just kidding Dave. I know you'll give it anyway.

If my new female turns out, I think that is what I might cross her to is a sonny bred dog.
Redtick
No offence but I think you need to hunt with more sonny bred dogs. I have hunted with many of them. I have a sonny bred female direct off of gold nugget ky lotto - If you come over and hunt with her i will show you one of the loudest females of any breed that you will probably ever hear in your hunting carrier. I can say the ones i have hunted with are loud and they are very open on track probably too much. they are also very good track dogs with good noses - they hunt very good. and yes they are treee Dogs!!!!!!! and very eairly starters. Bring your camera and record her for your collection, you won't be disapointed she is an open trailer, hard loud tree dog, hunts the instant you cut her loose, and she can tree those Janurary coon too. she's not perfect but show me one that is.
I don't know anything about sonny bred english dogs but i know a little about sonny boy bred walkers and they seem pretty nice to me, could use a little more tree though.
Oh yeah and my original reason for replying to this. If I here one more thing about January coon dog I'm going to puke. Redtick I have a buddy whos Jack Russel could tree January Coon in Illinios or Indiana. If a dog can't tree a coon in any month in your states he/she should be shot. Lets see you bring your January coon dogs up here to the northwoods and tree some coon(in January).
oh yeah and bring your video cam, consider this an invite.
nichols tree spike(sonny)

COONDOG
her mother is a Nite Ch and she is Boyds little joe and hayes hardtime speck bred . This female is a good reproducer too.
Sonny Dogs
I know alot about the Sonny dogs. Matter of fact I almost bought Chigger Hill Golden Sonny.
John G Smith bought the Chigger Hill Golden Sonny from Jack Cowgill from Ill. Sonny was the loudest every breath tree dog you ever heard. John Smith bred him to a Mcmillians Timber Chuck dog. Every pup treed from that litter. They bred a fox hound to him that would not tree and every pup treed out of that litter. Sonny could be bred to a poodle and the dogs would be tree dogs. John G Smith had a heart attack and Billy Jennet the nicest person you could ever met was working at John G Smith house building something. John mention to Billy Jennett that he would sell Sonny. Billy went home and told Bobby Jennett his brother about Sonny. Bobby bought Sonny and started to advertise him.
I have personally train over 30 Sonny dogs in my life. Dean Mullins used to have a dog out of Sonny that was lounder then Sonny named Outlaw. Outlaw I feel was one of the better dogs out of Sonny. They used to bring up dogs in the fall and I would train them. Most were natural tree dogs, and most were straight. Out of about 60 Sonny dogs I hunted and hunted with the best one was a dog that Donald Dobson had. I trained him. He was a complete balanced hound that had both strike and tree in him. He was out of Sonny and a Gr Nt Ch female directly off of Junior named Gr Nt Ch Owl Creek Suzy. His named was Buddy and I feel the best Sonny dog Sonny threw. To bad he never went to someone that would do him justice because he has it all . Buddy was a Gr Show Champion and a 1st strike dog and could move a track and a 1st tree dog that was not mean in any way. I also helped with Darby Creek Stalker, Sonny III has been at my house, hunted with Hardwood Uncle Sam, and many more. I know this line as good as the line I am hunting today. Sonny dogs are very loud and every breath tree dogs.
indian creek wendy
Isn't indian creek wendy a half littermate to sonny?I think sonny's mother was boyds little joe bred and i'm not sure about wendy's mother(deepwoods queen)

Indian Creek Wendy was out of Sire: Little River Pepper and Dam: Deepwoods Queen and she was a Half sister to Chigger Hill Golden Sonny. Sonny's Sire: Little River Pepper and his Dam: Little River Lady which was out of Boyd's Little Joe and Dark Shadow Doll
John mentioned Jack Cowgill. Jack was my mentor when it came to English Coonhounds. I spent many afternoons at his house when I was a young man while folks from all over the country would call to buy dogs and pups. Jack was a very successful realtor, he sold millions of dollars of real estate every year, but just before he died, he told me if he had it to do all over again, he would have just stayed with coondogs. I have had oportunities to make a good deal of money doing other things, but I have just stayed with coondogs. Jack helped me get started breeding English Coonhounds letting me breed my good females to his top stud dogs like Hopsing and some of his Coin bred dogs. I still have some of Jack's Illinois Valley Coin breeding in my Buckshot strain of English. I believe Larry Wilcox started out with dog carrying Jack's breeding. I sold Jack his last coondog not too long before he died. I see Jack's son, Terry Cowgill, around some, but Terry is more interested in Mt Curs.
I never used Sonny in my breeding and while Wendy is in some of my dog's breeding, I never put her in there too often or too close. Just my person preference, I have reasons but I won't post them here. I would have to look in some of my old yearbooks but I believe Little River Pepper was Platte Valley bred. But none of the Little River Pepper dogs ever showed any of the charactoristics that I have always associated with the Platte Valley line of English. The Little River Pepper dogs will tree, no doubt about it. Most Sonny bred dogs I have seen were tree dogs. Little Bam has both Sonny and Little River Pepper way back in his pedigree, but I do not breed into it. Again, just my preference.

Yes, but I would consider Oakwood's Sunkist depending on how far you'll travel and where you live in the first place. I hunted against the Kid dog and he was nice from strike to tree and had a nice mouth too!

I hunted with Rocket about a month ago. Rocket is a nice balanced hound. The leaves were off and it was colder than a witches @#@ and every tree he made he had the coon in it. He is a loud hard tree dog, very good natured at the tree. Stand on the wood looking straight up. David Mayles is a hell of a nice fellow. and he's got a nice hound to. His number is 740-696-1248
Hey Travis what Female are you trying to sell? And whats her pedigree and whats her price tag? might know someone interested. PM me or email me ....huntinfool24@aol.com
thanks
Coty
I have a Nite Ch female off of Tree Spike. She is a PKC ch with about 2000$ won onn her in PKC. I havn't had her but a few weeks and took her Tuesday night and made 6 drops and treed 5 single coons with here. She will be bred to Danny Boy as soon as she comes in.
