Anyone interested in another training thread!!
I have 4 pups that I feel are super nice at 13 weeks old. Owned by Danny Rainville. Just back yard dogs in a way. Out of Alice ll and a grnite out of Jet 9 and northern blue Shadow. Bold, real good mouths and they love attention. If I get enough interest, I'll start it. If not, I won't waste my time and effort!!! I believe there is something about these 4 pups that just trips my trigger to see the outcome. Not performance nor pkc registered. Ukc registration is all they have. Just some pups is all!! Danny G.

I'm still hanging in there somewhat! Got a few pups here that Dan Rainville owns. I told him I would spend some time with them and see how it goes. To say the least, nice pups for what I see in them. Time will tell all. That will put me at just over 325 pups that I have been involved with since 51 years ago and still running. Been a long road to say the least! Pups will be just that! I'm gonna say at this time at 13 wks old, these 4 pups should be treeing wild coons at 6 to 6 and a half months old on their own! Their bred right and time will tell the whole truth with these pups! I would bet my pennies on them so to speak but I have been wrong a time or to at times!!! Just gonna have some fun with it is all!! Danny G.

Nothing more at my age I enjoy more than training pups. Been at it more than most. Nothing pleases me more than when I hear that pup roll up on its first tree and hold it's own till I get to them. That's what I enjoy them the most in hunting hounds. Always have and will continue to do so! I've kinda slipped away a bit but still on the sidelines if needed! Danny G.

PUPS NOT FORSALE!
Benn a bit hot here of late but have manage to spend a bit of time with these pups. I've started to tie them out on a chain inside the pup pen so they get use to that. I've hauled them just once in a kennel crate in back of the truck. I have self feeders inside the pup run. Their inside plastic barrels so the rain can get feed wet. Most important, I have another barrel that is wired together, size but top and bottom cut off so I in turn it to close off feeder opening in the morning so I can haul them when I get home from shop later in the day and their stomachs won't be full of feed and make them sick when hauling. Works great for me! Other than that, soon they'll be ready to take to the Glista lake and learn to swim! From here on out when I haul them, the lake will be my last stop before I return home after swimming them some. With the net program, where the net goes they'll sure enough follow it. Water on dry land. Drags will start 3 weeks from now! Later,Danny G.

Lets start with brains and go from there!!
In 2 days I can look at what I do and make a choice if a pup or two has the smarts to suite me!!! In 10 minutes and less then 16 weeks old , one can tell 90% of the time if his choice is the right one if he spends the time to do so with them!!! Trust me I know pups!! Danny G'

Dan what do you look for ?
evaluating brains early on
One of the best ways I have found and it works for me is when I first put the pups on a tie out chain. It works for me and of course I'm always messing with 2 pups or more at a time. I would much rather have 4 than to only have 1. For the pups, it, a confidence thing when it comes to numbers. For me, I can pick from 3 or 4! Only 1, you live with the outcome good or bad. They don.t all make it!! The 1st time I tie them out I spend some time keeping them at ease. Most pups don,t take to being tied very well when allowed to run free in the pup run. From then on, when I tie them up again, if one watches the reactions of the pups very close, the smarter wittier pups will turn away from where they had a bit of a bad experience. Keep your eyes appealed to those that remembered. They turn away because they out smarted ya so to speak. Any place away from there they realize is a safe zone. Next is how long it takes them to get use to being tied out! The quicker they get over it the better, again, keep those things in mind. Most pups I have messed with that take 6 to 8 times of being tied out more times than not I have found to be on the soft side more times than not!! Might not mean much now but on down the road it will when one needs corrected. Nothing better than a bold outgoing pup.

introducing them to being tied up
One of the most important things that needs to happen before ever hunting them or taking them out of the pup pen is getting them use to being restricted from their freedom and controlled by chaining them up. Some take it better than others. I normally start it at an younger age but in this case, pups were brought to me a bit older. So I deal with it as that. Spending time at first with them and then eventually chaining them up and walk away for an hour or so. In the video below you'll notice after 1st of being chained up one pup is still a bit uneasy with the fact that her freedom has been restricted. Other 3 have responded great. I,ve put her beside a pup that has the confidence with it and chains are long enough that they can touch noses. In doing that she gains a bit more confidence herself. Strenght in numbers comes into play here! I'll post another video where she responds in a positive way within the group as a whole. Also will point out that they will no longer be messed with in the pup pen other than just chaining them up. We''ll see if you can spot why I chose to do so.

The numbers game and making things turn out positive at the end of training!
In this video and just after being tied out with chains you can see the pup with the red collar on has a completely different demeanor once she gets free and joins her littermates in a short but positive training session! Ending things for her on a positive note is a good thing for her. If one looks at both treeing vids of them on the tree there should 1 thing that starts to stand out in both of them. It's the reason they will not be messed with on treeing in the pup pen from this point on. Time too haul them to another spot and keep messing with them. Trip to the lake will be their next training session. Teaching them to swim and that water is a great thing that ends up on the tree where if you payed close attention to their actions, they enjoy it alot! Can you spot why!!

Nothing worse than messing with pups on a full belly
Something I found out years ago so I came up with a way to make things much easier for myself. Hauling to train pups on full stomach will get you off to a bad start quick. You can.t expect pups to come out of the haul box sick and not feeling well and think it's gonna be ok. Just doesn't work out that way. With having to spend so much time at the business I found myself years back that what made things tough for myself was when it came to hauling pups just to haul them or to take and lay drags or swim them they had full bellies. I found an easy solution to the problem. Saved me a bunch of headaches over the years. Now I just go out to pup pen before I leave in the morning and close off the feeders. Later that day I'll mess with them knowing thier go to go. Video will show what I did if you are having to deal with the same problemed I faced. These pups just turned 14 weeks old and are off to what I consider a great start. Time will tell how it all works out for them and me! Still thinking they'll tree a turn loose coon before 6 months old. That's putting all 4 on the same turn loose coon. So far they have built confidence with one another as pack animals in nature tells us so! No reason to break up the pack at anytime from here on out until they are split up and go to their new homes. Doesn't matter what species in nature you take a good look at, there is always going to be a more confident and positive outcome when working with a pack. Look at a lions pride, wolf packs, or in many cases, human beings themselves. Who's gonna have more confidence and desire to succeed in a case where 1 or 2 gang members is thinking about taking on another gang of 20 with the odds being 20 to 2!! Larger the pack, the more confident and bold they will be. By now you can tell I'm a numbers guys when it comes to messing with pups. I find it easier to mess with 3 or 4 than just a single pup. It works for me! Danny G.
