Tree dog or track dog ?

I realize that ideally everyone wants a balanced dog. But if given the choice between the two and if the disposition and mouth and drive/hunt Were the same which pup would y'all rather have?
Pup A... Is a super quick stylish tree dog that just locks down and blows the top out of a tree. Will even split tree some. But he has a hard time with a track and gets bogged down and stands on his head. He will even quit it if it gets too bad.

Pup B.... Is a super nice fast track dog. Just flies on a good track and will do a real nice job on a bad track. But he is real slow to get treed and mills around on a cold tree and keeps trying to go on. He will not split tree yet.

I'll take "B" any day. "A" is not likely to be very accurate. "B" will be far more likely to have a coon when it does settle in on a tree, and the treeing will get better with time.

I would go with dog B. I can find plenty of tree power to breed to. I'd take my chances on the track dog any day. If a dog is smart enough to use it's nose the right way then I believe most are smart enough to develop the tree part.

Then you got some that say get them to tree then work on the rest. So it's kinda of loaded question. LOL

Bruce, there isn't a right or wrong answer. I keep going back and forth as to what I want. On the one hand, you don't have to wait on one that starts right out treeing. But they still probably won't make a top hound unless you only hunt where there are a lot of coons. But that trailing hound might be 2 yrs old before they start treeing or might never start. So what do you do?

I myself breed for dog B, because I never want to lose the track part, it is considerably harder to get back than the tree part!
Track dogs are accurate dogs that have the coon.

My belief is I can always add tree in a little at a time

So, second guestion, is it easier to add in tree or add in track? And third one, can you take a dog with too much tree and keep adding in track until you get a balanced hound? Or can you take a dog with too much track and keep adding in tree until you get a balanced hound?

Is it really that easy?

I will take the A dog in a heart beat, i am a little older than most of you, lol i remember back in the day when everyone had a track dog but very few of them would tree under pressure.I will take the tree dog, i can work on the other stuff,but if you don't have a tree dog you have nothing. Hell if you want a track dog that won't tree, buy your self a coyote or fox hound and you can listen to them run all night!! LOL Gene Parrow

I have also learned that different parts of the country require different types of dogs, Yes! some dogs will work everywhere, but some also do not work everywhere.
I have learned what to stay away from in these Mtns. and ridges, where a man has to walk to every tree, you are allot less forgiving

I think it goes back to where you hunt and the ability you have due to your location to train one. Down here in FL with the tree running together and the coon hard to tree. A slick treeing dog will work you to death. Love to see the tree in them but you have to be able to correct if it becomes a problem. Same thing with too much track. As long as the track dog is progressing, then things can be alright in the end.
