Chewing at the tree

How do you break a dog from chewing at the tree. I have a young male dog who has just started doing this and I don't care for it? What are some methods you guys use to stop them from it. I really like him he's been treeing alot of coons for me but I just don't want him to get into bad habits? Last night was the second time I've seen him do it. I want to stop it before it gets worse.

I have used the shock collar and it works really well. also can pour hot sauce down his mouth wile chewing. leaves him wondering why his beloved bark just got hot. both work....the collar is faster for him to learn.

You can slow it down, but I don't believe you can ever totally break one from it. I got one that can chew pretty bad and I have been using the collar on him. He has slowed way down but can't get him to totally stop.

If they chew, they will stay...

Good luck breaking them. You might slow them down, you won't stop it though.

I had a young blue male that chew bad, he also was a slick tree specialist. I would work on him with a switch for the chewing and he would tree harder and louder. I would shock my for slick treeing. I couldn’t stop him from slick treeing, so I gave him away. The guy I gave him to would put a switch on him on slick trees, and he would tree harder. Lol He told me one day, “this just makes no since, when I switch him for them slick trees, and he just goes crazy treeing”. We got a good laugh out of that.

Chewing

I'd rather not shock him while he is on the tree I don't want him to think he's not supposed to tree coons. I'll try the hot sauce. Any other suggestions besides whipping his ass and shocking him are welcome.

I know of someone who has their canines pulled. Once he did that pretty much stopped all the chewing. Has done it to multiple dogs.

Don't know for sure if it would work. But a muzzle wouldn't let him chew.

If your dog knows what the tone button means try toning him first. My pup does it especially if you tie him back off the tree he chews the leash and anything else he can get ahold of. I tone him first and if he does it again I give him just enough juice to get his attention. When I get his attention I just tell him to get back on the tree and he starts treeing and usually don't chew anymore. He is starting to chew less and tree harder since I started doing this.

I have broke a couple that didn't chew very bad with a switch and by watching the way that I tied them back around the tree.
There was some that I slowed down with a E collar, dogs aren't as stupid as you might think, I didn't break them from treeing and it didn't matter how hot the collar was or how long or often the shock was. It did change their tree styles, all of the dogs that had been radical tree dogs became stationary tree dogs that wanted to be handled at the tree.
An E collar also works on digging.

If chewing is a fault you can't deal with he is ruined already why not use the collar.

He's not ruined he's only done it twice that I have seen. I would prefer not to shock him I don't want him to not tree but then again he is an intense tree dog so it probably wouldn't hurt him. I can work out most problems but haven't ever had to deal with this before. How's your pup doing Rob?

I'd like to shoot the mate to yours but Jenna won't let me! He makes me so mad I can't hardly hunt him. He can tree coons slick as you please then he goes into that retarded coma mode and just trails all night and he's not running junk just won't stay goes on trailing another track. Some nights he is independant some he's not. Not my type of dog! Way too much coma, probably gonna get hit by a car on "accident"!

You might check his ears

I have seen dogs that have an ear problem chew because the barking hurts their ears.

In this case it's genetic all of these pups do this.

Lol Dan went through that about a week or two I just kept hunting him then he quit missing after a few hickory switches and pushing him on for a few long nights. Are you saying the chewing is genetic rob?

I don't know about a hound, but I have broke a few horses from chewing by mixing vinegar and red pepper then spraying down everything they want to chew. Might not be to handy carrying around a spray bottle through the woods. Might be a waste of time, but worth a try.

crazy but true . i drew a black and tan at a money hunt years ago .owner had hog rings in his lips to stop the dog from chewing .worked on him that night lol .

Does he chew with the front teeth or is he chewing with the back ones? You can float his teeth and hunt him the same night his teeth will be a little sore and if he starts chewing it'll hurt it usually works fairly good. As mentioned before I've never seen one that chewed have a habit of leaving trees.

Ear mites and some of the over the counter, or IVAMEC, should fix it right up.
