Stud dog owner females??

How many females do you own if you are a stud dog owner if you care to say?

Seems most the stud dog owners never have any pups for sale.

When i use to go visit Mike Dohoney i counted one time he had 12 females in his kennel?

Now it seems if a stud dog owner has over two females in their kennel it something to talk about.

I am not a breeder so i can't answer this question but would like some comments from those who do have outstanding stud dogs.

Ican't name ever good stud dog out there but no reason ever skuna River pup from that line of dogs could not be sold.
Every Clover bred pup out of a good clover stud dog would sell in a heart beat.
Every Boone bred dog will sell with out advertisement.
Who would not like to have a pup out of Bone Collector or DR.Law
How aboue High -x-pectation and Insane Cain i am going to stop here for it would take another page to name all the good stud dogs out there.
The question is it easier to ask some one else to bring their female to breed to your stud dog than to have to fool with a bunch of pups for 6 or 8 weeks i just always wondered why more stud dog owners did not have more pups for sell you call they all promised or nothing bred at that time.
I in no way mean for this to upset any one but i think is a question a lot of people would like to here the stud owners reasoning on this matter.

Hillbilly Mac pups would sell like Hot cakes if they were enough to go around.
Every one would like to own a Bean bred nite hunter pup.

I'll answer for me anyway...

I usually try to keep three females in my kennel to breed to. It works best if they cycle at different times of the year, but here lately all of mine want to cycle at the same time.

Reason I only keep three? That ones simple.... The Mrs.

I only keep 4 dogs at my house No more than that.
I am a coon/competition hunter FIRST. No room for breeding females.
Between Lincoln and a young pup that only leaves room for 2 dogs that I am pushing Right now I am hunting a NTCH female out of Lincoln in the hunts and I have another top young dog out of him that will be hitting the hunts soon.
Besides there are 3 females bred to him now and another coming next week. So there always seem to be a pup I can get my hands on when Im ready. Don't want to turn into a puppy mill!!!!!

think a lot of it due to high price of dogfood,
I only breed for my own use ,going have to cut back on dogs soon got 5 male/5females now
and back 15-20 yrs ago had around 40 dogs/pups most time ,normal person couldn't afford feed and care for that many with todays prices. feeding 125 lb feed a day back then,scares me to think of the cost of that todays prices..

I think I understand what your asking, most pup buyers will only buy from a cross the stud owner has made and yes most of the time there already spoken for, I only have two females at this time but try to keep the best i can, I have made an out cross with Chick on Pay Dirt, im still working on getting Josie titled before she is ever bred, every pup that leaves my kennel has a 12 month guaranty from the day it leaves, but the cold hard truth is you better be in it for the long haul, it will consume every day of your life, everything you do, everything you plan, every vacation (if you get to take one) will be worked around dogs and people, every weekend someone is coming to breed, buy a pup or coming to hunt so they can judge You and Your dogs, every phone call is 30 min of how great there female is, 10 min about the other cross they have made, 2 min to describe how your Stud dog hunts, Sorry Carl i forgot what you was asking LOL.

I would say it's a combination of things...the biggest one being that good females are just hard to find. I think some of the guys with stud dogs don't want to, or are not in a position to mess with more dogs or puppies. Think of the differences in the business end of it...with a stud dog, all you really are concerned with is the money. If you get paid and the owner of the female has a litter, well that's about all there is to it. But with selling puppies, now you have the general public in force. You now have to deal with every person that buys a pup, some will become new friends, but some will be those people you wish you never met.
I think though that the biggest thing is when you are a stud dog owner and you only breed other peoples females, you can easily blame the lack of reproducing on them. "awe, you know, none of them pups turned out, must be that female he has is no good...." Sort of like blaming squirrels for a slick treeing dog, we all know better...but it sounds good and it's easier than manning up.

Tim you hit the nail on the head i just did not want to put that kind of label on every female that gets bred.

The real deal stud dog owners are not going to breed a female of their own that does not have the potential to reproduce the kind of pups that will make a name for themselves.

Quality over quanity is what most are looking for and like West Virginia coonhunter Brad said any more than three or four females and people start thinking you are just running a puppy mill and breeding anything to make a few dollars.

I think buying from the stud dog owner rather than someone that has bred an unproven female to a top notch stud will give you a higher percentage chance of getting the kind of pup you are looking to buy.
I have been for quite a few years now high on proven reproducing females as the foundation in starting any kennel of your own and thats on my list if every thing works out for me so am just trying to pick your alls brains as much as i can.
I like ever thing i have read so far good advice and the right way to do things and the time it takes to get it right.

I think with the high price of gas that a stud dog owner really needs two or three good friends that he trust who live in different states. They should all have a couple of nice females to breed, that way you get your pups closer to the guys that are looking to get a pup off of said stud dog.

Problem with doing it that way is someone's feelings get hurt and you end up loosing a good friend.

You got the out of state right Hobo for i spend about 5 years trying to get a Joe Newlin bred pup out of Clover Cubed and a good reproducing female and it just never did work out for me so i just gave up and went another route.

It does help when the Stud owner is a straight shooter.The ones that will tell you straight up what kinda dog there breeding.Thats the kind I wanna be friends with and buy pups off of.Some will only tell the good and some will tell you exactly what you wanna hear.The truth always comes to the top.Most habits or faults that a female has will show up in her pups.Sounds like these guys make the best crosses they possibly can.It shows in there pups and reputation.Shame Yall are so far away.Keep up the good work.

But two of them just come in once a year.... That's the part I hate, if they would come in twice a year I could get one bred and skip the other till the next cycle.

I'd much rather get a pup from someone who keeps a female or 2, to HUNT. He has proven them in the woods, and has done his homework and found what he believes is the best stud in the world to breed her to.

I think your chances of getting a top quality pup are alot better.

Problem with that is how do you know they did their homework? Most guys just breed to a dog that's in the books or the latest winner.

I started doing it this way about 20 years ago and went from once in a great while starting a good pup to usually starting a good pup .

I'm new to the stud dog world and newer to hunting than alot of you well probably all of you but I am working on my own females and got one ready to go now and I think I done my homework that's why I have her because I believe it's 60% to 70% female than stud dog and that's imo.
