getting pup to range out

Alright guys I could use some suggestions. I've got my first started dog. He's a walker going to be 2 in the fall. I bought him from a friend who started him last hide season. He took him with another dog and by himself. He will run a track and tree alone. I bought him this spring and have hunted him with another dog but mainly alone. The problem I'm having is getting him to range out. On a field edge he'll go out 200 yds or so, but in the woods he'll only go about 80 - 100yds. He will then hunt around and get frustrated then pull up on a tree. I've been pulling him off and led him away and sent him off but he'll go back to the tree. So last night he got the whippin switch when he pulled up on the tree. He still didn't want to get gone after that. Is there something else I should or can be doing to get him to go? Thanks .

Next hunt keep you a switch handy. If he pulls up to quick for you thrash him and send him on. Sit down at the bottom of the tree with your switch and every time he returns thrash him a little harder. I almost forgot, be sure to check the tree pretty good on the way in just in case he has a coon. Lol. Most of the time it will be obvios like a corn stalk or fence post. PM me your progress. I usually charge people for info. Just kidding. Good Luck.

Heart desire and drive or bred traits either they have it or they don't a switch although might help some it also might jut make him stand somewhere else!!!! Jmo I would sell to a pleasure hunter and start over with something with some go in it!!!!! I won't stand for 200 yards from 6 month old pups that's not even going inmmy country!! Good luck but I don't think you are going to change a 2 year old dog!!

give him a little time . He has had to change owners and some dogs have sit backs with that . I would not give up on the dog .Hunt him alone for a while till you two bond. Make him your best friend , he needs to want to hunt for you .

I didn't say culls but **** you guys that are talking 200 yards that's not but 2 football fields cmon maybe in your country but you are more than welcome to come hunt with me!!! A top guy come down from Canada to breed a dog and we hunted he told my wife the next morning that he hasn't walked that much in 5 months of hunting!!! Lol we didn't go that far that night!! I have 2 litters of pups here rite now that it's 2-300 yards down to the creek and I took them there one time and rite now they will go!!! Oh they are just 7 weeks old!! I guess it's a lot what your use to!! And that's another reason that the big name winners send dogs all over the country to be hunted in different terrain and coon population so they are well rounded and nothing is new to them!! But a dog either has the want to or he don't and that's the difference in a top dog and a dog that will tree a coon!! I didn't say cull I said move him onto a pleasure hunter!! Also a lot of it is the dogs but not all of it the owner has to do his part and that's putting the dog in different terrain so they can learn and develop and be well rounded!! Most dogs from north won't tree coons here I'm not talking about the big winners are hard hunted dogs I'm talking about your two year old dogs that have had easy 150 yard chases there while life when they get to where they have to go hunting possibly a mile to strike a coon on a bad night they just don't know what to do cause they have never been there!!! And aswell as I took a top male the first night in van wert whip never went over 70 ft to strike a track and yes he treed a couple coon but the dogs from that area that were use to running wide open until they hit a hot track and slam them my dogs have to take the first track they come to and make it work!!!! All said above heart desire drive is born in them not trained!!!!!

Posted by POTOMAC on 08-13-2013 10:12 PM:

I also didn't say big hunting but even a 6 month old pup that has been brought up rite and been taken to the woods regular as it was raised is going to go and going to be hustling in everything it does and checking back in is not something you see out of the rite ones!!!! I had a legend female and my cyclone female that I would let run lode in the evenings and the legend bitch would jump a deer and you would have to go get her and both would take off hunting and you would have to call them back or go get them and I mean a lot farther than 200 yards!!!! With that said I have started 12 pups in the last 6 years out of top or suppose to be top crosses and all would tree coons !! None are at my house at this time and most left for lack of desire to hunt hard and wide !! A couple left cause of there mouth!! But this trait is propably the hardest to find in any of the breed s today!!!!! You will know it when you have one and you will want a handle on him or her !!!! I'm done when I'm done not when they are done but I only want to see them when they are treed are I tone them!!!! Anything else is just pure ask of desire and to lazy to get the job done!!

I will say if he's ranging on out there with another dog. He may start going further. I raised one here. Never hunted it alone for its whole first yr. Then I started trying to get her to go alone. She wouldn't go period. Then one night. She got out of her pen. Got about 500 yards in there treed. Treed for hrs till I noticed. After that night. Shed go to the ends of the earth alone. Still will. No come back in her. I guess she got over her fear that night.

Ya, Ga Dawg. Friday night he slicked I pulled him off walked him away and he ended up going back so I just left him. He jacked around there a few minutes then shut up. As luck has it I lost gps communication and couldn't track him. Pretty good ridges and valleys, but anyways he was gone for 3 hrs. Don't know what he was doing but he was out of range. Never heard him again. I just don't know if hunting him with the old dog will help build confidence to go or if I just need to camp out on a log and wait for him to do it alone. He stays busy, he doesn't just sit by me. I just thought maybe other guys have come across this problem and found something that seemed to help

You could try a feeder. Just turn him out within about a hundred yards a few times on it. Then gradually back up further and further. Might work.

I'm saying if ya take a 6 month old pup out for the first time you make it sound like if he doesn't fire in there 1 mile he's a cull. Lol. I don't need anyone to describe a hard hunting dog to me I promise, most men wont follow them long. But, I guess you must be hunting in my honey holes where you can usually get struck in a half a mile, that's about 8 and a half football fields, that's when the kittens are out or the coon are moving. O ya, if a 7 week old pup gets 200-300 yards from my place he's Hawthorne or coyote bait, hel$ the hawks round here can carry off a 7 week old pup that just got off the tit

is he really just picking a tree? or is he running tracks and coming up slick??

if he hits a track within his 200yd buffer zone will he take that track to a tree??

my current dog wasnt big on ranging out for a bit...most arent......they wanna play..they arent sure of what to do etc...it takes time and patience...

sit on a stump and ignore them...works sometimes..

or, walk em and sit on a stump..give em some time and walk em a bit farther...

thats all it took with mine...he started going farther and farther...i walked him where i knew he aughta find a track not overly far away...

not long after that there were some bad nites when the coon werent down when i wanted to cry because he was so dang far away lol...treed with the meat makes it alright...

i dont wanna get after a dog for not going hunting....when i turn a dog loose i want it to WANT to go find a coon...i see guys turn dogs loose at hunts and you can just TELL that dog isnt hunting FOR them...its running away from them..maybe hunting maybe not..those same dogs arent able to be caught at the end of the hunt...

my dog loves me....he hunts FOR me...he learned i am his buddy and hunting is fun...treeing coon is really fun..theres nothing else that dog would rather do than tree me a coon.....and thats how it aughta be IMO...

but, like was said, a dog like that has the desire and drive and heart...a little time and patience and he done what he was supposed to...

when i am an ole timer i really think i will train a dog to "walk hunt" and not range more than 50-100yds...i REALLY do enjoy hunting like that..i can walk the dog to where a coon track aughta be...i can go at my pace..if i dont wanna climb up and over 5 hills i dont...and when they hit a track its usually a hot one and usually treed quick and on the outside...i really like pup training just because for a while a hunt at MY pace..not at the dogs..i LOVE hunting with my dog...but i am 26...when i am 66 or 86 i just might not want a dog that goes till he finds a track...

if he doesnt come around, and he DOES tree coon, he aughta be fixed and find a good home...

We got so many fox and coyote here that the pups are playing in the road and also quite a few bald eagles here close but you know what I raise them as good as any and if it happens it happens I'm not going to leave pups locked in a kennel I have 20 on the ground now!! And you are welcome to come see what the conditions are and as far as a 6 month old not busting in there and being a cull that's your words not mine!! First I spend time with my pups daily in the woods from 7 weeks on !! So by six months old they are accustomed to noises smells etc... so yes when I cut the strap they better get gone into something or they won't be here long !! If I have to switch one to make him go I don't need him but back to the original question the man was talking about a 2 year old dog that would not hunt out much more than 80-100 yards in the woods my suggestion was start over and sell him to a pleasure hunter or enjoy him for what he is but at 2 years old he is propably short of a miracle not going to be the dog he is wanting!! Now are you disagreeing with that aswell???? I really don't care I was just voicing my opinion for what it's worth which propably is not much according to you and that's fine !! I wish you the best with your pup keep us posted on his progress and I hope he makes the best you have ever walked behindb!!!! Guys there's nobody to blame for the traits or lack there of but us the hunters in which most are trying to make the million dollar crosses with these all grand pedigrees etc if we start culling harder and only breeding top reproducing females with traits that are wanted to males that share the same traits that are wanted and don't worry about what the papers say the better off we will be!! Good luck 571-233-5819

Agreed with everything you said except I personally don't care if they start at 6 months or 10. I have owned both and had the Okla state change and he was 12-13 months when we win it, had some just as good that started later then him

He just picks a tree. He's been through the area several times and doesn't strike. He knows he's wrong too because he can't be caught at the tree. If he's got the meat I can walk up and tie him back. I don't want to correct him to the point he can't be caught up. He just needs to learn the tracks aren't always going to be 100yds away. This weekend I'll try putting him in a bigger woods and wait him out

Posted by tykar on 08-14-2013 06:34 AM:

hunt where there are no trees

maybe you cant do this but i have had luck taking a good dog out with my young dogs and makin them run a creek a half mile before they can tree

I wont keep one for very long that doesnt go hard, but heres something that you might try, if you have a honey hole take that dog to the same spot every night for a week the first few nights you might need to walk the dog some and then start gradually cutting the dog from some distance so that heading for the woods becomes a fun pattern. If that doesnt work spend the next week finding that dog a new home, they dont all make it.

When i first start training a pup if i use caged coon i always turn em loose 3 to 4 hundred yards away from where i turn the pup loose and wait 20 minutes or so. Then they don't get used to finding a track within the first 1 hundred yards. Sounds like this might be what he is used to when hunting alone just a thought hope it helps.

99 - you say you have a good female, why not just hunt this dog through the up coming season with her and see what he is at the end of it. You have nothing to lose, every dog shakes out at their own speed; this time hunted with your good female will let him get his mind together. If it doesn't work out, all you have lost is a little dog feed and some time. Tom
