LED light issue, anybody else with this?

First off let me say the three LED lights I have are top quality. I have the Super Six from Brite Eyes, the Boss and the Sunspot. I used the Super Six on my belt light until I got the Boss and Sunspot and I went to using them and leaving the belt light at home.

The issue I have is this, I can't find the dang coons near as good with the LED lights. If they don't look at me it seems I can't hardly make them out against the bark of the trees. What made me notice this the most was the other night I had one look at me then go on up the tree. I knew where that coon went and I NEVER DID FIND IT AGAIN. I watched it climb up there and saw it real good. Should have been able to find it easy and never did find it again.

I went back to my old head and last night they just seemed to jump out at me even though one was balled up in a fork and never did look.

Maybe it's just me but I can't seem to make them out as good as I can with the old style light. Anybody else?

I will add they seem to look more with the LED than with the old style, but that may be me just wantin to find a positive for them light, bright things without all the other stuff LOL.

That is the very reason, especially when I am on a competition hunt, that I carry my spotlight. When the dogs tree I put my yellow pop cover on my led head. By the time we get to the tree my eyes are adjusted to the yellow light. Try this - you might find it works for you.

You just need a better dog.....If they are there, you will find 'em....bla..bla..bla.

Yeah, it's not that I am not finding the coons, it's that they have to look at me or I have to see the tail. The rest blends in. It's wierd. The light is every bit as bright (the super 6 with my belt light is the same as my old head on the belt light) but it's way harder to see the coon with it.

But when I went back to my old, non LED light I could see the body of the coon really good even though it never looked and I couldn't see the tail.

Just wondered if anybody else was having that issue.

I always noticed it, but figgured I'd just bet used to it. After the other night it seems I am getting used to it, but not in a good way I'm just getting used to having to look harder LOL. My eyes just don't seem to be adjusting to the LED type light.

Rip, I have heard this from several guys, all of them veteran coon hunters. Some of these younger guys barely remember bulbs. It seems the guys who have looked at coons the longest have least appreciation for LED's. Not sure what that's about, maybe it's an optical thing. But I know plenty of guys that have said the same thing you are saying.

I've got different mounts (bear , coon , deer , etc.) on the wall.
If you shine both lights on them , switching from one to the other , it seems the old lights reflect off the hair more , and the LED's seem to be "absorbed" by it.
Don't know why , just what it looks like to me.
And , yes , I have a harder time finding them too.

I've heard lots say it. I don't have a problem. In the winter. If he's there. I'll see it in seconds! I think I can see them better!!! Rip, Bruce makes a led colored like the old heads. Its led though so you get the long burn times!

Well since I have three of them already I am going to perform another test. I'm gonna use my old light and my buddy is gonna use one of the LED's.

He's better at spottin coons than I am so we will see if all of a sudden I find them better than him LOL.

Plus I will be able to turn mine off and on after we find it to compere.

Thank god I'm not the only one. Don't have any trouble with my G2, but when I use my sunspot it literally lights up the whole tree and I can't seem to focus my eyes to find a coon. The sunspot is a great light I just find myself looking at the whole tree. But let me walk into a opussom and it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I have not yet converted to the LED's

It seems like it depends on the night which one is better. I have been on casts when the LED's clearly outperformed my light, then there are nights when mine seems to throw a better beam.

One thing is for sure, the writing is on the wall...My next light will be a LED ........weather I like them or not.

I got sick of blowing bulbs and I bought an original Predator light. It was when there were no leaves, and the first tree I'll admit, seemed a little difficult to get used to the "blue-ish" light, but every tree made after that seemed like it made the fur stand out. Now I bought a Blazer 6 LED head for my belt light, and it seems I'm having the problem you speak of, makes the coon blend in with the bark. Maybe I'm just a headcase?

The Predator light is nowhere as bright as my 6LED head, so maybe that is the issue too. The brighter the LED, the more the coon fur blends in with the bark? I don't know, just an idea....

It seems to be different for each person. It took me a while when I first started using them. Now for me there is no difference, If you like the color of the filament bulb, just use an amber lens. Mine makes my lights color look just like the 5100 heads. If I know someone is purchasing one of my lights that have never used a led before I tell them that it will take a while to get used to how the coon looks.
Remember that some leds have a different color. There is no such thing as a white led. They use a blue led and dope the lens dome over the led die with phosphorus. When the blue light shine though it the light changes color to a white color. That coupled with many different things like temp decide the color of the led. There are even color variations inside the different color bins of the leds.
I think that our individual eyes react differently to this change in color. Some of us have difficulty with it and some don’t.

To answer your question Rip, no you’re not the only one. Try the amber lens I think it will help. In my experience the amber leds nor the yellow leds look as close as a white one with an amber lens.

Rip since your a Doctor I think you know the answer to your question. What do you tell a patient that comes in and tells you things are not like they use to be. The can't seem to jump as high and see as good. Old Age!! lol Just messing with you. I have a list of people from every major hunt this year telling me how the Boss Light with the Cats Eye has found coon on their cast that no other light would find!!
Green seems to be the #1 choice.

With that said I am color blind and have had a hard time finding these coon for 40 some years. The have to want to be found for me to find one!!!

Well they seem to look at the green real good and I have found plenty of them with the green Catseye.

I will say that to me, and this by no means means it's true and could just be a bad memory, it seems they LOOK at the LED's better than the older lights. Have no idea why or if it even makes sense. Seems like they wouldn't want to look at the bright white light as much but just from my observations it seems like they look at it better.

I don't have a problem finding them when they look. It's when they don't that it makes it tough LOL.

I THOUGHT I was getting used to it (like I knew I would have to just like anything else you change, after all I have used LED now ever since the Super Six came out about 2 or 3 years ago) but after I went back to my old head and those coons just seemed to jump out at me I think my gettin used to it was me just not expecting to see them as good and looking harder.

Love all 3 of the LED's I have, but have went to the cap lights (both the Boss and the Sunspot) for pleasure huntin cause it's just so much easier and quicker. I'm gonna see these next few weeks if it was just my imagination the other night or if my old tired eyes needs that yeller light LOL.

what i had to do was put glowing dye in the coons water supply near me i can now see the coon from the truck no really i had some trouble at first now no problem

Seriously Rip there are several that feel the same as you do.
That's we we went to putting all amber LED's in some of the lights. They look identical to the traditional lights but you have the benefits of a LED light. i.e. burn time, no bulbs to change and brightness.

I wouldn't wear an led light if you paid me to wear one. They are junk as far as i'm concerned.

Anyone that says they can find coon with that light blue tint better then a yellowish tins is just fooling themselves.

It's a fact that leds do not pick up color on color. Whenever you shine that led, whatever you shie it on will reflect that light blue tint. It's pretty much impossible to see fur if its high up at all.

I have never been good at finding coons. I had buddies tell me the coon was right there and then they prove it with a .22. I can't tell you how frustrating it used to be.

Well, the first thing I did that made it better was I went to the eye doctor. i found out that I was near sighted with a bad case of astigmatism. Glasses sure did help, but to be honest i still wasn't the greatest at finding coon. For years my best chance of finding coon was the spot on my Raw Dawg. I swear I had yo light up that tree to find'em.

Now, I use a G2 head, and I have to say I love the dang thing! Not only am I finding more coons, but I am finding them much faster.

So Rip when was the last time ya seen the eye doctor? I am just asking.

As long as we are talking about finding coon....

I find it much more difficult finding coon in IN, OH, Il ect... Than it is here in MN.

The coon are usually much smaller and tend to hide a little differently....it takes a while to train your eye for this...JMHO.

I have seen several leds while in casts. There's no need to bet anything.

You ever tracked a blood trail? Track a blood trail with a led light then track it with a regular light and tell me which one was far easier to see the red.

Never seen a blood red coon still in the tree lol. The best for tracking blood is a blue and red LED on at the same time. Some peoples eye just can't find a coon with a LED. I also think that some people trun there LED up to high when looking for the coon causing a white out.
