Ticks
They are VERY bad here in N.W. Oklahoma.. I know some years are worse than other on all insects, ticks one year then maybe grass hoppers, butter flies, termites etc. but I have never seen ticks this bad. My wife will'nt ride in my pickup after I get back from a night out hunting. we find ticks in the pickup 2-days later...

I've seen a lot more here this spring than normal as well. About 4 weeks ago I was regularly picking about 20 ticks off my redbone every few days. She must be a magnet, because none of the other dogs got them that bad, even when I put my pup in the same pen as her.
Went hunting Friday night, and when I got home both my fiance and I found ticks on us. I've been putting Off Outdoors bug spray on before we go in the woods (even spraying it on my clothes, especially around sleeve and pant openings) and that seems to help a lot. I wasn't as thorough with the spray that night, but the ticks I found were right below my hairline on the back of my neck and one was crawling up my leg like it'd been inside my boots or my Carhartts. When I went last night I REALLY sprayed myself down, and so far so good.

I usually get them off while they're still crawling, but I've missed 2 deer ticks this year that I didn't find until the next morning and they were attached good!! So far none of the telltale signs of Lyme disease. I've had it once before but caught it early enough to treat with antibiotics, but that stuff is serious and I don't want to get it again. Problem is those tiny little deer ticks are so darn hard to see.

Yall- go to Wal-Mart and get some Permanone and treat your hunting clothes. It's good stuff. The ticks will leave you alone.

This is probably the worst year ive ever seen, but it seems like they were a little worse earlier in the year. They are still thick here in ky. but i dont think they are as bad as they were in march and april. I try to hunt along the river bottoms instead of the woods this time of year they dont seem to be as thick along the river.

They've been pretty heavy here in Mid MO already as well. We had such a mild winter they came out earlier than usual! One trick we use is we buy the flea and tick spray for dogs and we'll spray that on the inside of the truck after we get back to get rid of any that might have fallen off our clothes in the truck. Works on our clothes as well pretty good and dosen't smell near as bad as regular bug spray! Our daughter both have sensitive skin and they will get rashes from the Deep Wood Off if they use it more than 1 day in a row but they don't with the dog/puppy spray.

I tried a trick I heard about on this board for easier tick removal Friday night after I hunted. Someone suggested rubbing liquid hand soap on the tick with a cotton ball, and after a few seconds it came right off. A lot less traumatic than pulling it off, for sure!

Mleck is known as the tick extractor for SE Kansas. Never seen him in action on a pleasure hunt but seen him scratch his dog to pull ticks. I've heard the liquid soap method works. I'll be sure to let him know about that method.
If you have ever had thousands of seed ticks crawling around on your body you will appreciate the yearlings and adults. You can see them to pick off. The seed ticks can't be seen until they suck a little blood. While hunting, I have scrubed with a saturated rag of gas to get those seed ticks off of me.

Well I just got back from the Dr. and I have been diagnosed with Lymes Diesease, I pulled a tick off around 3 weeks ago and started to get severe headaches and my eyes were hurting and then yesterday my knees , ankles and finger joint started hurting, and I have been totally exhausted the past 2 weeks. So I went this morn and they said yep you got lymes. They put me on doxycycline. Has any one ever had problems with the lymes coming back later after being treated?

hunt test
I think it was the night before, Gary took me to the jungle and I pulled a tick off the back of my neck when I got home. And it was kinda itchy for a while and never really healed up, Then all the symtoms started to appear. The Dr. said it could be STARI or LYME in which there in not much difference, and even the blood test wouldnt tell which it was, they are both a pretty much the same bacteria.
So I am blameing Gary and that dang Jungle he likes to hunt every time I go over there.
The Dr. said that there was a kid that came in yesterday with Rocky Mt Spotted fever and he contracted it on Skeleton Creek by 51 hwy while he was fishing.

When I had it they gave my dox and my dad had it twice and they gave him dox too. All three occassions it went away and stayed away, but all three occassions we caught it before we had your types of symptoms. Look for the bullseye! Red irritated area with a bright red spot in the middle. It will show up long before any other symptoms and is a surefire sign of Lyme's. My dad never saw either tick that bit him but saw the bites 2-4 days later and got treated with the antibiotics. Hopefully, it will be fine for you too. Good luck.

I never really had the bulls eye rash or if I did it was small as I never seen it. But it was on the back of my neck right under the hair line. According to the cdc we shouldnt even have Lymes here in oklahoma but the dr. told me not to believe every thing the cdc says as they are very political. What ever that means. The Stari and the Lyme she said are pretty much the same thing and we have plenty of cases of them in Oklahoma. Which sucks for me! The dr. said that most likely the symtoms will expire with the dox but they could come back at any time even with out another bite from a tick.
The thing about it is where the sucker was at, Cause I always soak the back of my neck with deet since mosquitos love me. And he still attached himself there.

they have been terrible in Virgina this year, i use Bayers on my dogs and it keeps them off them but i have had about 20 attached to me. i finally got a spray REPEL Permanone to spay on cloths and boots and it keeps them off. it says you can spray your truck seats and it will kill them too. you can spray your cloths with it and it will last for weeks. my wife had lymes a few years ago and it was mis diagnosed and it affected her heart. she now has a irriganal heart beat and has to take medicine for the rest of her life
