Hunting season
Just curious as to when different places coonhunting season opened. My area, which is the western unit of Tn, (which is about 80% of the entire state) opens sunset on Sept 19. Eastern unit opens sunset Nov. 1. Could care less about killing everything I tree but it is nice to reward a dog every now and then.
Ours is open year around, but the State Trappers are trying to get a fall season back on and also they are trying to get snares in the southern part of the state, which I have heard may have already been done.

Our kill season always opens last week of October, but there are still some blue coon then, the best hides are taken around Thanksgiving. The cool damp weather in November primes them up pretty good. When I was younger I always thought it was the frosts that prime them up, but the older hunters and trappers educated me. I would rather get a couple nice big prime big woods coon each night than a truckload of unprime or young coon. I'm in Western New York State, west of the Finger Lakes.

Season
Our "kill" season opens on the first saturday in November and runs until the last day of January. Indiana has a very liberal "training" season that allows us to run our dogs nearly year around.
Training season ends two weeks prior to kill season. Not a very good way to tune dogs up......

Missouri coon season runs from November 20-Jan15. Opens right in the middle or our fall deer gun season. Not the best of times to have a young dog in the woods that might get side tracked snacking on unclaimed deer or gut piles.

Season
I believe michigan opens Oct-1, But there is a claus that you may take a raccoon any time if they are doing damage or you think they are about to do damage!!!!!!
Hey, Old Timer....I hadn't heard that about the snares......I lead a pretty sheltered life, so its not suprising.
Do you think trappers will use snares more than conibear's???
Im not sure which one is the gerater evil???
We have snares everywhere down here the year around on account of so many coyotes in the sheep and goats.I have never, knock on wood, lost a dog to a snare. The ones I have had caught in one, being as they are used to being tied or lead, have never pulled hard enough to choke to death.Had one that if we hadn't been real close to him would have met his demise but fortunately we were close enough to set him free. Now I haven't had to deal with the conibear but haven't ever heard of a dog getting in one and living over it.Our season here is year around but hide selling starts in Nov. and runs through about the middle of Feb.,that is IF we can even find someone to buy them, the last several years we haven't had a buyer anywhere around us.

I have a real phobia of conibers....I lost the best young hound I have ever seen in one 3 years ago.....Just about everyone I talk to has a conibear story, and they always end badly.
I did have a 100# female that was able to get the trap sideways on her head, pull the stake and find her way home, (trap and all) 2 years ago....In February
Man, do I hate those things!
in oklahoma our kill season is december 1st threw january 31st not a real long season but long enough to get a few skins for pups to play with

"Kill" season is what I meant by hunting season. We can run, hunt, train, or whatever you want to call it year round. Just cant start knocking them out till Sept 19 (west unit) or Nov 1 (east unit) here in Tn. I really dont care anything about knocking out a ton of coon I just think its a nice reward for a job well done to let them have one here and there.
Re
oug Robinson-I have too, always thought cold weather caused fur to prime. Was told several years ago, by a mink rancher, that length of daylight was a major factor. He put mink in buildings and decreased the lighting daily and primed them at will(so he said). I've heard a lot of "stuff" in my life, guess some of it was true.
I do know that egg farmers control egg production in the same manner.
Our kill season starts in less than 2 weeks.
ares in ga starts in two weeks
GEORGIA....................
you can run year 'round.............kill season..........OCTOBER 15..................whoever said in 2 weeks in Georgia better look at page 10 of the huntin' regs...................kill season doesn't mean that much to me..............our dogs treed 212 last year, and I shot 18.............wouldn't have shot that many, but was trainin' 2 pups...............if ya got the blood, they don't need fur in their teeth every night.
season here comes in mid oct runs untilend of feb. we can train year round
Here in the Land of Lincoln, we have a 2 area system. North of Rt 36 it opens November 5, South of 36 it opens Nov. 10. We have a 10 day period before and after seasons come in or go out that you can not train dogs, otherwise, you can train dogs anytime.

North Carolina finally went to a statewide season last year. Oct. 15th through March 1st.
Limits remain different. I do not know if they even have a limit down east, but up here in the western part in the hills we have a 20 coon limit.
Running season opens a month prior to the kill season and stays in a month after it closes.
In my area you may not run hounds during the gun hunt for deer which knocks out three weeks in late November-December.
You may run hounds year-round on private land, but the county I live in is about 80% national forest or state game lands. On top of that, there are the bear sanctuaries...
Speaking of conibears (which I personally despise), I was hunting last year, and fixing to walk off a levee into the woods and almost stepped in one. It was 10 foot from any water, right next to the top of a levee. It was close enough that if a dog had stuck it's nose off the levee, even on a leash, he would have been caught. Those type of trappers are ignorant morons who give all ethical trappers bad names. Set your conibears in the water, where they were designed to be set, and leave the landsets to legholds.
tennessee
i have heard thru the grape vine that tennesse may change and consolidate the whole state to the eastern units reg's nov-feb

the season usuall opens 2nd sat. of nov. training season is year round. note on priming of fur---friend of mine raises purebred angus cattle and shows and sells to show people.he keeps his inside his barn, controls the light, keeps it cold year round having his setup like a walk in cooler and has water sprayers to put a mist in the air. does this to keep that hair slick and the winter coat on.

Pursuit season is Sept. 1st to February 28th, harvest Nov 15th-Feb 28th.
