catch a possum throw it in the dog box shock dog when grabed
open the door let the possum out shock dog as needed.

Posted by POTOMAC on 03-11-2009 03:37 AM:

build a 1x1 box as long as youd dogs kennel/ let opposum live above your dog for awhile tap him with colar to start when he bark or jumps to get it eventually he will get used to the oppossum geting fed and wont pay no attention to them. this will work for fox as well but fox you need to let them urinate and such on dog only take dog out to feed then back in it wont take dog long to gat the idea.

possum

take a pickle barrel and drill holes in it. Catch a possum in a cage and put him in the pickle barrel. then put your dog in it. roll the pickle barrel for about ten min. then take a break and repeat

that's what I was thinking... good grief.

I don't ever try to set my dog up for punishment. If you want to break them off trash, one of the best ways is to road the dog. Let him run in front of the truck and hunt. You will run across a lot of trash. And you can see everything the dog does.

I try to do this toward the end of a night with my young gyp, and some night it's all we do. I just scold her on trash and after a couple of times she won't bother with it. Now if we do get a coon that way, I get out and love her up good.

while doing the gut stomp. JUST KIDDING. Repitition is the key. The smarter one's get the message pretty quick. And in the case of a redbone, you're in for a long battle. Some on here have said once they tree it, the damage is done, and I have to agree cause the dog has already got his jollies. Set him up and apply discipline while he's on track. DON'T GIVE UP. I made it my New Year's resolution to break Jane. Check out thread "finally" on the redbone side. Check with Johnny Altman, Carolina Kennels, in Andrews, S.C. (843 602 6750)

One of my Plotts caught 1 on the ground and treed 2. The other treed 5 (she was a little harder headed, just like a female...LOL). I hit him with a hot tri-tronics everytime and that's all it took. They hate the smell of them now. I know because they haven't treed one since.

Never ever , ever ..... ever .... ever .... shoot , trap or put your dog on a track of something you don't want him to run .

Being smarter than a dog means understanding that a dog knows a set-up .

It means you have to make the dog understand it's not ok to go looking for ... trailing .... or treeing possum.

It means you have to do the legwork and get out in the woods and do some quality control .

The best way is to cut your dog loose in a pecan orchard of somewhere that you can see there are possum , coon , skunks and such out feeding .... if the dog veers after the trash then burn him up and/or shake him like a rag doll .

It's gotta be natural and consistant ...

Posted by otown on 03-12-2009 02:38 AM:

If you can see or tell it is a opposum without walking to the tree try scolding the dog and tell it to come on . Sometimes this has worked good for me if they are not set in their ways.

Posted by samskennel on 03-12-2009 03:38 AM:

same as you break a hound off a deer wait till you see one cross the road and turn the hound loose and let him get on it if he does then shock em, I don't believe I would show the hound the game you don't want it to run, I would do that then get him on the track of the game you want and praise him.

Posted by Walker Man .22 on 03-12-2009 04:56 AM:

just start showing it coons nothing else and after a few months if theres no improvement then turn a possum loose and shock him for barking at it chasing or fooling with it in any way

Dogs can smell stuff that crosses the road before or as you are locking up the breaks to set them up for a shocking .... you aint tricking them but once ... if that .

Dogs know when you are putting them on a track ... don't put them on a track you don't want them to run ... it just confuses them .

Be smarter than the dog . ...

Turned dogs loose where Johnny has a coon lick on a tree right beside the road. Dogs shot across ditch and disappeared. I turned to watch Anthony crossing ditch on board laying across ditch and spot a possum in the tree with the coon lick. He was only about a foot above the lick and no more than 6 feeet off the ground. In about 10 mins. the dogs were treed in deep with a coon. You never know what may have just crossed the road ahead of you when you turn loose. I expect my dogs to be smarter than me ( Gummy da Dummy ). Around here there's plenty of offgame and you never know what might be hanging around, especially if you're hunting around feeders. Some say they smell the same but obviously OUR dogs are smart enough to know the difference. Or at least smart enough to remember THE TREATMENT. The next one of mine that trees a possum will get a trip to Johnny's the very next day. I'M SOLD on THE TREATMENT.

Most dogs that have been scolded will go past trash that is in plain sight .... it's when they are deep in or coon aint moving ... or other dogs trash that you get to test a dog .

Ever had dogs run a track or bump a tree that " just don't sound right " ... if you don't hoof it in there and look around you might just keep thinking your dogs are straight .

How about when a track "blows up" .... I've left the fat boys at the truck to sneak in and do some quality control and found possums laying in a creek that they stretched out and moved on from .

Your dog knows just how hard you hunt and just how much you expect ... and EVERY dog will pull the wool over your eyes if you think you can get lazy and say you know what he's doing from the tailgate.

.. you asked for comment , lol.
