Buy A Pup Or Raise Them Yourself
A friend and I were talking about buying a $1000 pup verses taking your own female breeding it and then raising the pup.
Alright there is a cross that is fixing to be made from a proven stud to a proven female. Every time this cross has been made the majority of the litter turned into coondogs, the coondogs that are well known and are winners. It cost a $1000 to buy a pup.
Then you look into breeding your own female, that may or may not be titled, that may or may not be a producer, and you only really want one pup. The stud you choose has a $400 stud fee, is a good ride from you, gas prices are high, also you might have to get a motel room and drive back the next day.
So lets tally it all up.
Stud fee: $400
Gas: lets say $200
Brucelosis test for female: Average $50
Motel room if needed: Average $75
Total: $725
Supplies for trip food.etc..round it off to $800 for the entire trip.
Then you look into the fact that your female may not take, so then you kick in your 65 notification and then you have to make the trip all over again.
So what would you do invest around $800 in a pup that you hope turns out and then maybe be left with a couple of pups left over that you have to get new homes for, or pay a $1000 for a pup that you a pretty sure that is going to turn into a coondog.
Please don't say, well I won't do this or that. This is just an opion, please just give your related to the topic. Jayson
I would pay the $1000.

little more to it if you raise a litter of pups.
feed, shots, worming and so on bottom line
can you sell the pups and come out with a
free 1.
Money is always my last consideration in such matters....if it is ever a consideration at all. And that comes from someone who is prolly poorer than most.
Raise your own litter and if you have the sand to do it raise them to 6 mths to a year. Then you can really select a pup. Not saying none or all will make usable hounds just saying you can pick the one you like the best. But that costs more than $1,000.00.
Either way your rolling the dice. Just better odds getting the pick.

I just feel safer paying $1000 for a pup, from a proven cross.
One example, crosses made on Valley Creek Queen, she is a reproducer.
But, to the contrary I am breeding my NTCH female to Duck's Hammering Buck, he is a coondog and I really like what I have seen and heard about his pups.

GOOD QUESTION?
My self I would never pay a grand for 6-weel old puppy. My luck, I would get him home and in a few weeks he would get parvo and croke! Then I'm out a grand and still no pup. Or I raise him up and at 4 months old... he gets a Firestone shampoo while running loose on the farm. I would rather take chance of raising a litter myself. Sheep had a good comment.... go with what you know. Plus.... if you have two nice dogs and you raise pups from them and sell them at a decent price, $100, $200, or even $300 a lot of hunters would take a chance for that kind of money. I know I would! And you could still end up with the kind of pup/pups you want..... they may not have the all-grand super slam title's in their pedigree, but may be able to get their own title's in the right hands. JMO... for what's it's worth.
I buy some and raise some.
On a personal level, it is very rewarding to raise a pup out of your own hound and see it grow up and make the right kind.
But I have absolutely no qualms about buying a pup out of something else if it is what I want.
I like one or two of mine pretty well, but I am not so ignorant or blind as to think I have the best there is out there. So if I want to improve, I am going to have to get something from somebody.

what would happen and something happen to that pup.got sick or died on you now you are stuck with that price tag.if you breed one you will have a chance to pick from more than one and maybe keep 2 or 3 for yourself.

I would tend to lean towards your female, even though you think the 1,000 dollar cross will produce you what you are looking for,not everyone of those 1,000 dollar pups will make it to your expectations, otherwise we would all have the same dogs cause everyone is striving to have a good dog. pleasure or comp. hounds. Make sure your female is what you look for in a hound and be honest with yourself grade her on the expectations you have. if she passes look for a male that you are satified with breed. then grade your female as a reproducer. who knows you may hit that cross that is even better than the 1,000 litter. But you have got to have confidence in the pup your gonna start with and give it the opportunties it needs to succeed for you. It's all a game of chance with any pup. My limit on purchasing a pup is 300.00

Here's an option, try and see if the seller of the $1000 pup will put in writing a gurantee, that at a year old that the pup will run & tree its own coon, even though the pup might not meet your exact expectations he/she will tree it's own coon, then that way if it can tree it's own coon but your just not satisfied then you can probably sell the dog and get your $1000 back or close to it!
And there are some breeders out there that do put gurantees on their pups, not alot but there are a few,but it's worth a try!

WHY PAY 1000 FOR A PUP? THE MOST I EVER PAID WAS 200 MOST TIMES IT'S 150. I'VE BOUGHT 4 DOGS IN 3 YEARS AND ALL OF THEM TURNED OUT. THE THING I STARTED TO DO WAS BUY 2 PUPS FROM A LITTER. THAT GIVES YOU BETTER ODDS OF ONE TURNING OUT. THE LAST TIME I DID THAT BOTH TURNED OUT. I'VE EVEN DRIVEN TO NC FROM PA. I TOOK MY CAR AND A SMALL DOG CARRIER GAS COST ME 80 FOR GAS I ONLY STOPPED 2 TIMES TO EAT. THE DOGS WAS 150 EACH. SO AROUND 400 I SPENT AND I WOULDN'T TRADE LIGHTING AND STAR FOR ANY 1000 DOLLAR DOG. IT TOOK ME 3 MONTHS OF READING THIS BOARD TO PICK THEM BUT IT TURNED OUT.

I have absolutly no problem giving a grand for a pup. It better be an outstanding proven cross, and the pup I want, but no problem paying that for it if it is.
Think about it. The time, moneywear and tear on trucks, ext, it takes to make a hound out of a pup. The price of the dog is nothing compaired to the cost of training and promoting it.
I learned along time ago, buying the dog is the cheap part of this game. Spend the money and get what you want.

If the first cross produced pups that all turnt out to make top hounds spend $2000 for two pups. Hunt them both, keep the best one and sell one for $2500. Second option, you can look around and find the same genetics for much less and possibly end up with a better hound. The price certainly doesn't determine ability.

1000 bucks, them pups better come with gold teeth!!
Just Depends
I guess if your dogs weren't titled/all world, it would be tough to get rid of the pups...that would be my biggest concern. I like to look into the pedigrees and add some variation off of the dogs we have now without varying too far. $200-$300 range is plenty for me, plus I haven't had any luck with females and won't own one so I guess the decision is made for me

This post is not for helping answer a question if I should buy a $1000 pup or breed my own female. I'm not trying to decide what to do or ask anyone to help me out with a decision. The post was made to ask what would you do in the following cercumstances.
The question was what would you rather do spend a $1000 on a pup from a proven cross, not a cross where all the dogs ran and treed, a cross of nothing but coondogs. Or breed your own female that is not proven, don't know what the outcome will be, you may still come out of pocket near about the same amount of the proven cross, you don't have to go threw raising the litter or worry about getting rid of the pups you have left over once you made your cross.
Sheep, me and Duck are good friends I have hunted with Buck several nights and seen several coons under him, if you would recall I have posted several invites for you to come hunt with me and Duck up on the mountain. Me breeding my female to Buck has nothing to do with this thread, please read the first over again.

Those high priced pups dont seem to get buried if they need buried. They get advertised on these message boards as "super staked, performance, all grand, huge mouthed, great looking, proven cross with a head full of sense.the only reason this pup is for sale is because of my job i dont have the time to hunt this pup the way he deserves to be hunted."
if the ad were honest it would read"i gave a thousand dollars for this idiot and he really needs a bullet in his head, but im looking for a sucker so i can recover some of my money.
im not saying a proven cross pup is not the way to go,im just saying if he turns out to be a dud, take care of the problem yourself regardless if you gave a thousand dollars or a nickel for it.
I agree with ya Elvis, no matter what the price of the pup, if it is a dud then it should be culled. I can't stand when someone has a dog that isn't worth a crap try to sell it for more money than what it is worth, or try to trade their crap of to someone and make it look like the dog is better than what it is.
Oh, and don't forget to add strait legged and cat fotted to the end.
