All that has a GARMIN ( please look )
I had a friend that had 2 collars turned off and stolen . Found both dogs but with no collars . So I called Garmin and asked about locking a collar to stay on or you would have to have the handheld nearby to turn off the collar . They said if we go to their website ( Garmin ) and comment on their site they would consider of trying to add this feature . Please let's try to get it done .
.
I know anything can happen but if your hunting your dogs and watching them on a Garmin screen. How do you loose them and allow them to be stolen?
.
I think he means that the dogs were located even though the collars were removed and summarily stolen. I do not feel as though he is saying there was an incident of loosing the dogs, at least not until the collars were removed. Somebody may have called him to tell him the dogs had shown up at their place.
Sometimes my dog is deep enough treed or hunting to where if someone was closer to him than I was, they could easily get to him before I did and they could remove the collar.
Heck, just the other night I had to walk about a mile out to the truck, then drive around to my dog because the creek was too deep for me to cross. Had someone been hunting in the area he was treed in, they could have been to him, removed the collar, and been somewhere else hunting well before I could have made it to the truck, then drove around to figure out the best attack plan.
I WISH THR WAS A WAY TO LOCK THEM SO IF SOMEBODY DOES STEAL THE COLLARS THEY CANT USE THE STOLEN COLLAR IVE HAD COLLARS STOLEN RIGHT OUT OF MY DOG BOX WHICH NOW I LOCK THE STORAGE AND A GUY WENT TO MY TRUCK MY DOG WAS IN THE BOX TOOK THE COLLAR OF THE DOG AN SMASHED IT ON THE ROAD THR ARE SOME CRAZY PEOPLE OUT THR

garmin
So your saying that you (the owner) would only be able to turn them off? I like the idea, would it be done by handheld?
So doesn't garmin have a way to put in a number that stops others from tracking your collar? Why couldn't they do that with the turnin the power off? Just have a PIN number you put in that prevents the collar from being turned off until you put that number in.

I dont think you would accomplish much, most cases of a stolen collar are an angry land owner, they would just shut them off with a hammer.

Don't know if that would help.
If they take the collar off and throw in the brush, they still have your dog.

Tone it down guys, or they will delete another good topic...
Tim there's no perfect fix I guess . Just like John said , a hammer will do the trick too . But I think it would help some . There's always gonna be some that can find to get away with things like this but then again I think it would help some of us hunters if this could be installed . Garmin said they would consider it if there's enough people asking . Thanks for all help .
I think it is a good idea. Might not be fool proof all the time, different situations get different results from the owner as well as the thief. Anyone that has ever had a good dog stolen knows that anything possible to prevent it is a good thing. I am surprised that no one has started selling kevlar collars that fit the Garmins and lock on the dog. It's not expensive material these days but many guys would pay if such thing existed.
Like Mr. Conkey, my initial response to the above situation was how could someone else get there hands on a dog outfitted with Garmin tracking??? Then I thought of the other night when one of my young dogs ran a fox...I didn't think she would do it and turned her loose with the T5 so I couldn't stop her when she blasted off...she got almost 3/4 of a mile and I got to the truck and drove around to where it said she was. Sure enough, she had quit the track when she came out to the public road. I found her, there for anyone's taking, sitting on the side of the road watching cars go by.

Without trying, I can think of 20 different ways a person could get their hands on a dog outfitted with a Garmin and the owner would be helpless to stop it.
At least with the hammer situation, a person stealing the collar would not be able to re-sell it.
if the po po couldn't teach them not to do it again
bet I could think of a way

Not trying to jump topic but there is a debate on another thread about close hunting dogs vs go yonders. Situations like this make me even more fond of my close hunters.
This shouldn't be all too hard for Garmin to program on to their units and make it possible. Apple makes an app for their IPhones called find my iphone for lost iPhones which allows users to access the location of their lost iphone from another iPhone, iPad, MacBook, etc. and it also allows the user to lock the phone, send a message to the phone incase it's found, send an alert tone in time increments which allows the alert tone to go off so long then shuts the phone off for so long and turn back on and repeat the process until found, and the app will also send notifications via email if the find my iphone app has been turned on/off and a few other notifications as well such as a map with the updated location each time the phone is turned on, while it's on, and where it was when it was last turned off. All of which make the app very helpful for someone trying to recover a lost/stolen iphone and prevent people from using/securing private data stored on your phone. I agree with the others, people that want something bad enough will find a way to do the dirty deed of getting what they want. But the longer it takes them to accomplish the task of getting what they're after and getting away untraceable gives them less time to get away unnoticed.
.
Charles let me apologize. I should never look negative at any idea because that is what makes things happen. I fully understand deer running as we do it down here and I truly can understand how they can get away.
The APPLE APP and GPS like in the cell phone might be a good idea. Three weeks ago up in SC we were at a hunt and my buddy/handler lost his phone in the woods. He came back with the cast and then my Grandson John took him back to look for the phone. They were watching the garmin and pinged the phone as they were walking and found the phone in the middle of the woods.
I noticed something the other night that I did not know. My iPhone gps will pick up and show my location when I do not have service. I use Google birdseye on it to verify what my Garmin birdseye map is showing at times and without service it was showing my location.

The only problem I can think of is another hunter with a alpha could turn your collar off because there is no way you could make a collar specific to a handheld. It's like being in the woods and noticing a dog in your handheld is treeing across the mountain but it's not your dog just someone using a collar with the same tracking code. There is only so many frequencies that can be used before the number over lap.
