Renewed my faith in coon hunters

There is a whole lot of "negative" and "drama" on this message board, so I thought I would share a little about something that happened to me at Autumn Oaks.

Those of you who know me, and went to Autumn Oaks know that I had two litters of pups down there. All but two of the pups were "spoken for" by folks that contacted me via this very message board. Everyone that I spoke to was an adult, and were certainly old enough to make a deal based upon their word. Needless to say, not everyone that spoke for a pup, and assured me that they were going to come pick up the pup that they had picked out, followed through on their word.

Already disgusted that folks would pick pups out of a lineup, call me and say they wanted a specific pup, then not show up, I was approached by what appeared to be a very eager 14 year old young man. He was smitten with a puppy in my pen, and I watched as he stopped and played with the pup. I spoke to him, and he was very polite, but very "quiet". Not long after he left, she showed up with his parents and his sister.....again looking longingly at the little male that had captured his eye earlier.

He asked about the price on the pups and I told him. He looked longingly to his parents as to say "PLLLLLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEEE". His mother asked if I could help out a young guy that was disparate for his own puppy.

I found myself being torn....I was in the process of getting burned by not fewer than three grown ups who were not answering their phone, and were already overdue to pick up their pup..... talk about being put on the spot. Mom wanted to know if I would be willing to work out a payment plan on the puppy.....seems Jake has a part time job, and if I will let him take the puppy, he will make payments until the pup is paid for.

I basically told them that I still had to give the original person that spoke for the pup a chance to claim him, but I would certainly think about it. I got a chance to talk to Jake later in the day when he returned to see if "his" pup had been claimed. I could sense the relief when he looked into the pen and saw the little blue eyed wonder still looking back at him. Jake struck me as a fine young man that was willing to do just about anything in the world to have this little blue eyed pup.

Against what I thought was my better judgement, I worked out a deal with Jake....thinking all the while that there was a very good chance that I was just never going to see Jake, the pup, or any payment for the pup ever again. Jake brought a collar and led the puppy away after we exchanged phone numbers and mailing info.

I'm happy to tell everyone here that my faith in coon hunters has been renewed... I just got a call from Jake telling me that he named the puppy "Banshee"....and that he has already trapped a coon, introduced the puppy to the caged coon and he was pleased with the "LOUD Bawl" mouth on the puppy. He wanted to let me know that he gets paid tommorow, and to make sure that I knew that he was going to be sending his first payment as soon as he gets paid.

Yup....I could have given him the puppy....but I was raised that if we work for something, chances are we will appreciate it all the more....

Thank you Jake...you are my new hero.

Not only did you do the right thing but the best thing for both of you. You know that the pup will be cared for and probably trained. That pup will teach that boy a whole lot more than he'll teach it. You never know pardner

the lord works in mysterious ways. Good story and good hunting!

The boy didn't ask mom to buy it for him, and mom did't ask you to give it to him. Some lessons being taught in that house!

Good story ... I know the feeling of trying to sell pups and people backing out. My recent litter I had all them spoken for and in the end all but one person backed out on me.

God bless you for your decision. I would guess, it will be a pleasure, each time you get to visit the young man. When was last time you had a more satisfying sale? The example we make, when dealing with youth is so important. Thank you for being a role model.

Great story joe! Ladys and gents this is a great example of a mother and father teaching there son that he has to work for something he really wanted....and joe my hat is off to you for working with this young man!!! The coonhunting world needs more breeders like you!!!

Posted by countryboys on 09-06-2012 06:15 PM:

great story Joe. I remember the first dog I had to work for. He was my first dog. I had to pay him 10 live coons for him. Nobody in my family coon hunted at the time. my dad had retired from the sport and I wanted to get into it. I still remember all that he did for me.
