Snakebites

Well it wasnt a coonhound, but man my moms dog had a rough time.
About a month ago he got ahold of a HUGE rattler, well it actually got him. They rushed him to the vet...he wasnt responding to the bite treatment...they discoverd he had also eaten poision . It had been put out for Coyotes in thier area (illegal of course).

Ok so over a week at the vet and over a thousand dollars....the other day he slips out the door ,only to be bitten AGIAN!

They said the Rattler was about 7 ft. My have even been the same one.

He didnt make it this time.

Im curious though, we had an old hound that had been bitten so many times before and he never died or had a really bad reaction. And other dogs that were bitten ....could it be something withthe Pitt Bull that made him more sensitive to it?

And they think they have a bed of them in a brush pile....any suggestions of getting rid of them. They are going to set it on fire and have a gun on hand.

thats what we were thinking, but they need to mow the grass around the pile first.

I told them if they do then wait a few days to burn it to be sure they dont just run them out, that way they will come back.

Sorry for your loss!

Our Plott got bitten last summer on our very first hunt after purchasing him. We heard him yelp and he came back to us within 1-2 minutes. He was holding his front leg up and you could see a small bloody spot so we called it a night and took him home. By the time we got home he was already starting to swell and you could tell he was in pain. We gave him some Benadryl. I checked on him the next morning he was really swollen from his chest all the way down him front leg to his foot. I called the vet and they said all you could do is keep giving him Benadryl and if looks infected we should get him in to get started on some antibiotics.

If your dog gets bitten you should give him Benadryl 2mg per pound of body weight every 4-6 hours until the swelling is down and they are better, I was told this is usually 2-3 days. It will make them sleepy and tired but will help the body to fight the venom. Most Benadryl you get in the store is 25 mg capsules or caplets you can break the caplets in half if need be. I carry the caplets in the pouch on my hunting belt so we can start it immediately in case this ever happens again.

the crazy thing is , the first time he was bitten it actually saved his life .
The vet lives in the same area,(but her office is a ways away) and knew of people putting out posion for coyotes. So when he wasnt responding to the bite treatment she went for the posion treatment ...and he stabalized.

The snake got him in the face the first time and they didnt have time to get a benadryl down, they threw him in the back of the truck with my mom doing CPR the whole way.

This time he went down even quicker.

Ive had a bunch of dogs bitten by copperheads and i could hunt them two nights later. Ive had one bitten by a big timber rattler and he didnt make it long. Is there that big of a venom difference in the two snakes??

cutting the grass around the brush pile shouldn't run them off. they will probably seek refuge in it. lol i'd make sure to be high up on the mower so i didn'e get stuck. if you got a 7 footer he can get you on a reg mower. BE CAREFUL WITH GAS!!!! if you get a 7 footer to come out take some dang pictures! lol

Down here in Texas, if you hunt much in the summer, you are going to get dogs bit. I average three per year, one copperhead and two rattlers.
I carry three things with me:
1. Benadryl, children's liquid. I pour about 1/2 bottle down them, first thing.
2. Solu-Delta-Cortef, you can only get this shot from the Vet. It is a steroid, anti=toxin. THIS WILL SAVE YOU DOGS LIFE. You give 10 cc.
3. Then, I use DMSO paste at the sight of the bit. It is drawing gel. It will cut down on swelling and pull out a lot of the poison.

In the last 25 years of using this, I have never lost a dog that I was able to get to with this stuff.

Down here in Florida we get dogs bit a lot. Usually if they get bit by a rattler they die pretty quick. If they get bit by a cotten mouth they usually survive. I am going to start carrying Benedryl with me now that everyone reccomends it.

I have had pit bulls bit several times. One by a six foot six inch diamond back and it survived so I dont think there is something about pit dogs. A lot has to do with the amount of venom injected with the bite. Some bites are defensive and dont release as much venom as an offensive bite. The rate and severity of swelling will tell you how much venom was injected.

When I got bit the first time they marked my arm off in one inch increments and time how fast the swelling advanced and how severe it was. After fourty five minutes they told me I had a lethal dose and started anti-venom.

that had to be scary for them tell you after 45 min you had a lethal amount of venom

most all snakes dislike petroleum products. put oil on ground around area they will not cross it. i have sqirted them with a petroleum based bee spray from a distance and it burns them. stay back because they will strike at it. 12 gauge works well to.

i heard a biologist speak at a confrence and he stated only 25% of poisonous snake bites are venom injected.(i would fall in the 25% catagory) i have a dog or 2 bit everyyear had beagle get bit 2 times in 1 week and won a feild trial a week after the second bite

I have also heard that there is a shot that is like a vaccianation that is given to the dogs.

first shot and a booster 3 seeks later.. $25.00 or so. Cause the blood to thicken when bitten and gives more time to get to vet...

Check with your vet think they can order them in for you...

yea, copperheads will usually not inject venom if its something to big to eat like a dog. it called a dry bite. rattlesnakes dont dry bite alot there is usually always venom used in a bite. also the venom is alot more potent in rattlesnakes.

The Solu-Delta-Cortef is a "powder and sterile solution bottle". You mash it together to activate the powder, much like you do a 7-Way shot. I have been able to buy it from most any vet. I am telling you, IT WILL SAVE YOUR DOGS LIFE, if you get to your dog before he goes completely down.
Not all ratllesnake and copperhead bites will kill a dog. Some bites are much worse that others. But you need to be prepaired.
Three years ago, while hunting, my wifes old male was bitten by a hugh rattlesmake. It got him 'GOOD'. He was down within 10 minutes. I carried him as far as the road, my wife ran and got the pickup. I laid him on the tailgate, not thinking he would make it, but I gave him the Solu=Delta=Cortef shot anyway. He had already started some convultions. I then put a large glob of the DMSO paste on the bite, slid him into the dog box, and then drove like HE!! to the vet. When we got to the vet, about 35 minutes, he was already awake, but very sick. The vet gave him two more shots, and we stayed at the vets with him for about 6 or 7 hours, thru the night. The vet said the the Coetef shot saved the dogs life. He would not have made it the 30 minutes to the vet without that shot. Chug-A-Lug went home the next day.
Each person will do what they think is best for themselves and their hounds, but I think too much of my dogs to chance not getting them a shot if at all possible. I will use it at least 3 times a summer. Like I said before, THANK GOD, we have not lost a dog sense we have been using Solu-Delta-Corlef, DMSO, and Benadryl.

Don't use gas or you will have rattle snakes flying through the air. Diesel and kerosene mixture. Don't say that I didn't warn you. Jerry West, great advice.

Mr West, shot of Solu=Delta-Cortef...you have to keep this stuff on ice? Just currious if it is something that I could carry in the back pack. Most of the time I am a good ways from the truck

i just ordered a 10ml dose of the solu-delta-cortel from The Drug Company for $39.00. i don't know if that's a good deal or not but to save a dogs' life, it's worth it. go to wwwthedrugcompany.com.
my order is coming from south africa. now i'm wondering if i'll get it. we'll see. btw, you do not need to keep this refrigerated. of course, i think, it's always best to keep it in a cool, dry, out of the sunlight, place.
