Kennel sizes?

I am gettin ready to build a couple kennels, I need them to be able to be moved, as I dont plan on staying in this location for more than a couple more years, I need them to be portable, where they can be hauled onto a big flat bed trailer. For a full size hound that gets hunted fairly often, would a 6' x 10' x 6' high be big enough? What are the sizes you are using?

i have the 10 x 10 x 6 chainlink kennels , also have a pupy lot that is 6 x 10 x 6 and when not in puppy use i put older dogs in it they do fine

ever seen the off ground type? move them anywhere you want to. topic is under the title kennel design with pics. used them 37 yrs and there is not a better kennel design made.

Matt as soon as I get my taxes back I'm going to pour a slab and my runs are going to be 5X10, I think thats plenty big enough.

Matt the 6x10x6 is plenty. thats what our dogs are in and they are hunted on a regular basis.

These are 9X12X5.5 tall. Made them from 2"X4" steel panels and 2" round tubing. They are bolted together at the corners. These didn't cost me a whole lot because I used the tubing from cattle stalls I used to have.

If I were you I'd build a cheap wooded deck up off the ground, and put your kennel panels on that. When you move just use a wrench to disassemble the panels, load em on a flatbed or even into a box truck, and put em together at your new place.

Hey Matt, you live in the right part of the country to get old perduction tubeing to use as a frame. You could build them on pipe skids and drag them around if needed and load them with a good come a long. I would make them the same width as those rubber horse mats you can get for horse trailers and use them as a floor, raise one end up just a few inches so the water will run the way you want. Then have a troof made out of 8" PVC cut in half and run the waist any were you want.
It is pretty easy to bury a tank to use as a septic tank. 55 gallon barrel will last for several years. Got to put a top over them becouse the black rubber will get to hot and the rain will play heck with your septic system.

I used 10x10x6 and divided them with panels I picked up. They are now 5x10x6. Six spots only cover 30 feet. You can buy panels with two doors and then divide them with a spare panel. Put your houses on the outside and the dogs have plenty of room. I have one 10x10x6 for a brood pen. I can take the whole thing apart in less than an hour and put it all back together in less than an hour. I have probably less than $500.00 invested in all of it. Look in your local trade paper or swap shop radio program and you can pick up these kennels cheap. I would stop at houses where I would see them stacked up or an empty one without a dog in it and ask if they wanted to sell it. My dad and myself bought some really cheap.

Hey Matt, look at that pic up above. You can get that tubeing the gates are made of at the rail road yard in Stilwater pretty cheap. Attleast you could a few years ago. I made some out of that about 8 years ago. If you can weld a little that or perduction tubeing for the frame would be for ever or atleast last longer than me or you.

Matt, I have the Prefiert powder coated kennels; they are 5X10; they are absolutely the best kennels I have ever had. Atwoods sells them; for a couple or three dogs they are reasonable and extremely portable. My oldest ones are about ten years old, and look like brand new. I would suggest putting a top on them for shade and to keep the dogs from climbing out. I attached 2X4's to the top of the panels of mine and screwed sheet metal to them; it works great. Tom

LOL it is all relitive to what one makes. I have one 10x10 like that and love it but I think it was about $500.00 bucks just for one pen. They are really nice pens though.
You should consider that troff though. Man washing it in a troff that will pipe it were ever you want it is great. I built some cement one here in town that I tied to the city sewer. No flies,fuss or muss. I done one out in the country the same way but had to buy an old take to bury fog a septic tank, then a couple pieces of lateral line. That was 7 years ago and it is still going and should for as long as I live. It was an old 50 gal. gas tank. It is in ground that wont perk too.

Grady, I would love to set up a septic system, but we are all red clay and sand stone. No way I am gonna dig a hole big enough to bury a 50 gallon barrel, lol....

LOL might be tough diging. Mine wouldn't perc but I had a back hoe to dig with at the time. I dug my own septic tank hole up by Stillwell one time with a pick and shovel but I was a lot younger at the time and didn't like it then. Just tired of the 5 gal. bucket with the bottom cut out set over a post hole with a toilet lid on the top. Oh and black plastic fence around it for privacy. LOL
It is rocky there but not sand stone. lol
If it is 3' off the ground you can still run it into a tank and catch the solids. Then pipe the water anywere you want. Septic guys will come suck it out every few years for little of nothing.

The rail road yard use to have some 1"x3" subeing I will use if they staill have it. It is easier to work with than pipe. You don't have to cut out a sadle ever time you joint it together.

Mike Donaldson, that's a really nice set-up you have on your kennel. The only advice I would give anyone is to consider pouring your concrete pad on a slope. You have to "stick build" your kennel but the slope sure helps a lot when washing out your kennel. I also poured a trough on the outside which slopes into a 6" pvc pipe and then into a buried 50 gal. plastic barrel with lateral lines. Has worked really well for me.

The 10' X 10' X 6' Tarter Gate Elite series with a concrete pad.

Do not use a smooth concrete surface. It should have a medium course surface. Smooth surface does not provide friction for the pad to adhere to. Smooth surface will cause joint problems down the road.

If you are in need of a portable kennel . I've been using the
removable
18" X 30" X 1.5 " Slab.

Also, For the person above with the extra smooth kennel floor. You can put the 4' X 6' X 3/4 " Rubber pad over it especially at the entrance to the Dog house. It's a good idea even to put the dog house on top of the rubber matt. I've seen some kennels have most of the area Rubber covered. My dogs do not Crap or urinate on the rubber . It teaches them where to do there business to be cleaned.

The rubber mats are great but I would stick with as smooth off finish as you can get. If you ever get a dog that paces it will wear it pads off on a rough finish. The smooth is easier to cleen too. The smooth rubber is best but I would get the heavy mats and make sure the edges go out both ends of the pen or a lot of dogs will chew them up.

I have about 3 inches of slope in 12 feet. That is a steep bank on the back side. I wash out into the drip line of the shed roof and it washes it down the hill into the pasture when it rains. If I didn't have pasture on the back side, I would definitely go with a septic system.
I use a medium broom finish on the concrete and have never had any foot problems.

I have the Prefiert powder coated pens like Tom was talking about. I just never set them up as runs. I think I am going to now though. I have some dogs now that are playing heck with my yard. I will be able to controll there energy more that way too.

I am gonna build a couple above ground kennels. Gonna be 6 feet wide, 8 or 10 feet long, (not counting dog house). Gonna have them 3 feet tall, and 3 feet off the ground. Start with 1, and see how they like it.

Matt I guarantee you will love them. I used toecutters design and it worked perfect. The dogs do great in them b/c they don't ever have to stand in their waste, and clean up is really easy. I just rake out under mine once a week, and shovel it. I have a design for a really simple and well built dog house that just takes one sheet of plywood and one 8 foot 2x2 if you want it let me know. It fits perfect on the kennel.
