TAKE YOUR KIDS HUNTING INSTEAD
OF HUNTING FOR YOUR KIDS!!!
IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN HUNTING.
In 4 years ive made 2 nite chs and 1 grand nite and put wins on 3 other dogs!
every dog on my signature was finished by me to a nitech. and most of there wins toward grnite..but usually i have a young dog i'm messing with, so a few of there nite ch wins were from some of my hunting buddies who wanted something to hunt... i like to start young dogs and after a two yr old starts winning a little i get bored with them and like to start on a different one..

Ok one man trains it from pup to finished dog as far as being able to win against comp.
One man takes it and puts it in hunts and wins all the credits.
Now my question is wich man do you think finished the dog?

I'll probably make someone mad,
but I would think that it is much easier to make a Nt.Ch. or Gr.Nt.Ch. the last 5-10 years than it was 20-40 years ago.
First, I'll answer the question that was asked. I have finished 9 dogs to Nt.Ch. over the years, & 4 to Gr.Nt.Ch. After they made Nt.Ch. I would try to put the wins toward Gr.Nt.Ch. on them at larger Hunts. Once they made Nt.Ch. that dog would never be for sale.
IMO, if a dog can't make Nt.Ch. or Gr.Nt.Ch. in todays Hunts, as small as the entry's are, there is something wrong with that dog. There's a BIG difference in winning a Hunt where there are just 1-3 casts of dogs entered compared to a Hunt where there are 15-20 casts of dogs entered.

I haven't hunted in many hunts and never put credits on any dog but I have been in enough and around long enough to sure agree with that.

0, but then again I haven't tried.

I have to agree w/Witt.
Back in the day, hunts were 3 hrs. long.
A local event would draw 20-30+ dogs any given wkend.
There wasn't much "handlers for hire" then either.
Clique's were mostly none existance. It was all DOG.
Not saying most of todays NTCH/GRNTCH are counterfeits either.I have just seen my share of them in the last 5/7 yrs.

I think John hits it pretty much right on the head with his statement.
To answer the post. 40+ Nite Champions and right at 20 Grand Nites, but now I have been around for some time now, in fact I may be called an old timer. Alan Kalal
Finished...
1- to GRNTCH GRCH that I raised from a pup. He was finished before he was three. Only entered in about 12 hunts, won 3 different State Championships. Would not back on an empty, would tattle on others that "junked".
2- Raised from a pup. Finished to NTCH & @KCCH by the time he was two. One way hunter, would be by himself 99% of the time with the meat. Not for the faint of heart.
3- Born in my brothers kennel out of "our own dogs". Sold as a started pup to a pleasure hunter, bought back as a NTCH with no wins toward GRNTCH. Finished him to GRNTCH in 6 hunts. COONDOG from truck to tree!!!
Finished a handful more to NTCH that we/I bought already running and treeing.
For some strange reason I like to mess with pups and watch them progress, usually only enter a hunt when I know I have something extra special at the end of my leash.
I will never enter a hunt unless I know for a fact that I have a COONDOG at the end of my leash. Would never consider myself "famous" but will say I know what a dog should be. If I have what it takes I should only have to strike and tree my dog, nothing else should be a factor! Jmo, wd

Thanks Tardawg, I had to reread yours. Your post was under your signature and threw me off. Getting a little slow. I don't know that much about it but from what I have seen I would agree with you guys. If you tree enough the coon is bound to be in one of them. LOL

My husband has only finished 1 to GRNITECH. He got him when he was about a year old. He belonged to my husband's buddy who had become sick with bone cancer. After his buddy passed away he pushed Sam hard to make him a GRNITECH. We bought 2 other dogs from his wife and promised her that we would keep all of them. I've made on Nt Ch. When I first started comp hunting I hunted a Bluetick female that female had more cast wins than any dog I've ever owned but she NEVER did get that first place win. I haven't hit the comp hunts much for several years. I'd just as soon go pleasure hutning with a few friends than worry about the comp hunts.
BUT I do plan on hitting them pretty hard this Spring and raise my total up a lil.
LOL
I'm with dogfaceNH I'd rather hunt a young dog and get it goi8ng than mess with the comp side of it.

I have always said I was my dog's biggest liability. I have had a hand in finishing 2 to Nt.Ch.; I helped finish 1 female to Gr.Nt.Ch. and PKC Ch; I completely finished one female to Nt.Ch. and Show Ch. by my self. The 3 Nt.Ch. were not campaigned after getting their Nt.Ch. degrees.
I do enjoy the hunts but I just like coon hunting too much to get too competitive about it. Here is one of my favorite examples. On a cast one night we were having a good hunt. My female was running a good track and threw out a great locate. I was standing there looking at the other guys and said,"wow! did ya hear that locate?" I knew I had a bit of pride in my voice at the job my female was doing, but I got snapped back to reality when the other handlers all shouted out tree my dog. I actually took last tree!
Now, get me on a driveway court and a basketball in my hand or on a pool table and the competitive spirit comes out full force.
