I've had my pup on Diamond Extreme Athlete since she was 7 1/2 weeks old. At 13 1/2 weeks she's lean, good muscle for a pup, nice shiny coat and the vet said she's the nicest pup he's seen in a long time.

Diamond Puppy at Tractor Supply. They are growing like weeds and healthy as horses. They are twice the size of a friends litter that is the same age. (they are feeding High Pro...)

been using diamond for quite a few years it sure grows a puppy out nice not too fat musled up nice and steady growth i have a 9 year old that was raised as a pup on diamond that still can keep up with the young dogs.
using adult food for puppies can result in problems once they become adults my vet says most dogs with kidney problems develope the proneness to kidney problems in there puppy stage due to improper food for there age he also is not a fan of purina puppy chow he further stated most vets that promote purina do so because purina provides scholarship money to student vets not because it is an ideal puppy food

my good dog was just in a bad accident, he was real near death, lost allot of weight. Got him back from the vet and put him on Diamond puppy food. In one week he looked like a different dog. I was really impressed.

Whatever I put in the other dogs feeders, they feed themselves. Lately it has been Hi-Standard 24/20

I agree. Adult food shouldn't be fed to a puppy. When I got my pup that is what she was being fed so she was switched to Diamond puppy but she wouldn't eat it. She kept going to the big dogs food so I switched the pup to the Extreme Athlete which can be fed to puppys.

We have raised two litters, plus numerous other pups, on Diamond's Large Breed Puppy (Lamb & Rice Formula)....We really really liked it. The pups grew steadily but not super fast, they always had lots of energy and really shiny coats....

Yeah, I'd like to know that too.
Puppy feed is a myth perpetrated by dogfood companies to increase profits. I feed 24/20 from a premium dogfood company to all my pups and they couldn't do better.
If you do plan on feeding those 30/20 pup feeds you best have a supply of cod liver gell pills handy.

Posted by Geminite on 03-11-2009 06:10 PM:

It is a proven fact that a large breed pup (let's face it most hound pups these days are gonna be on the bigger size of medium lol) has an easier chance of developing Bone Cancer if they grow too rapidly as puppies. Also Rickets is a big concern, if the pup dosn't have the right vitamins, minerals and nutrients in the womb and while growing up they can show signs of rickets and that's not something very pretty to deal with.....Have seen it in several hound pups just here locally....

That's not to say though that your dog is going to get this stuff if you don't feed puppy food. Someone asked why feed puppy food, I was just stating that it may reduce these risks if you feed a quality puppy food.

Saving money is a good thing in my book. I like the DEA. It keeps my older (3 yr old) dog in good health and it doesn't have corn etc. Now if my puppy wasn't doing good on the DEA then I'd switch her to something else but she is and during the switch she didn't get the runs or anything else so I'm happy with it.

Why is that?

Posted by wayne f on 03-11-2009 06:37 PM:

cod liver oil is given to pups that have rickets jim is saying your protein/fat content is too high so your pup will grow faster than the bone structure i know that he is right with that i have seen the research however i disagree with jim's thought that puppy food isn't nessesary.
most major dog food companies have come up with a puppy food formulated for large breed puppies as there growth rate is differant than the smaller mutts.
i look at it this way these puppy foods go through a lot research to get the correct formula so i'm not expermenting with my pups its already been done with research animals.
i believe my olders dogs labs and coonhounds have given me enough proof i'm doing things correctly as they still do what there bred for past 9 years old and never had any serious problems at all my 9 year old coonhound i will put against anyones hound as far as endurance

IMO there is just no way to tell whether the feed makes one darn bit of difference or not. Dogs like people age differently. I have seem some 90 year olds that smoke, drink, and eat bad still alive and well and I have seen some 60 year old clean living folks that are in the ground. Until you find a way to do a side by side comparison of the same animal in different feeds that live exactly the same.....everything else is just theory.

And really why WOULDN'T a dog food company say the higher prices lower pound bags of "puppy food" is better through research, they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I could honestly care less what anyone feeds their dogs, but IMO thinking about it more than 3 seconds, spending more on it than you should, or going out of your way to get something "special" is just silly.

I'm not experimenting with my puppy. If I was switching every other week then yes but I'm sticking to this feed because she eats it just fine and she looks good. Now if later down the road an issue occurs and a change is needed then I will but for now she is fine. My vet knows what she is being fed and said she looks very good.

Large Breed Puppy food

Bear in mind that Large Breed Puppy food was developed for large HEAVY breeds (Newf, Saint, Irish Wolfhound, etc) that were suffering growing deficiencies (OCD, bone deformities, etc) from too high a percent of protein and fat. Many of those breeders were already feeding a basic aldult food to their puppies to slow the rate of growth. The feed companies caught on, and started marketing to that group. However, it was never designed and tested on breeds that were not heavy for their size (even though the companies now recommend it for any breed that matures at over 50 or 60 pounds).
Write to a few dog food companies and get copies of their feeding trials to see for yourself.
The other mis-marketing was lamb and rice feeds, that were designed for dogs with digestive issues, and then caught on as the latest fad. There is no reason to feed a lamb and rice dog food to a normal dog.
I would not recommend feeding either large breed or lamb and rice food to any working breed, without getting the appropriate information directly from the feeding trials, regardless of how it is marketed.
Laurie
PS. the biggest difference between adult and puppy food is the amount of calcium, as puppies have higher calcium requirements than adults.

I have always fed Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy with great results. I recently went and picked up a stud puppy and it was on Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy and I was very impressed with the way the litter looked as a whole. I also saw a young dog out of my walkers at that time that had been raised on the Eukanuba and he looked amazing. So needless to say we made the switch to Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy...I am currently feeding it to Felony's litter and I am VERY impressed with the results.

dog food

We feed our pups nothing but Pro Plan puppy lamb and rice, they look good, act good. Go to my post on the Plott free advertising forum and check out the pics of our pups, they were almost 4 weeks old in those pics. Sure it costs a little more, but I want to own my pup for a long while and if I can give it a real good start in life, then I should still be hunting her or him 10-12 years from now. The adult dogs are all fed Purina One lamb and rice, it gives them tons of stamina and there is very little clean up. If you join Purina's Pro Club, you get checks redeemable for $7.00 off of every bag, and we've found Sam's Club has it cheaper than almost anyone else. Hope this helps !

I've personally raised puppies for over 20 years feeding them any good 26-18 that there momma was eating. Wean them put out a free feeder, not one ounce of problems EVER!!!!!

The 30-20 is fine too, but on free feeder stools will get too loose, and dont be puttin extra crap on there feed with it, you'll kick there legs "ricketts". I will not waste money on a "puppy" food, because any good 26-18 or 24-20 for that matter can be fed to gestating, lactating females and puppies.

If you are the worry wart type of person and sit around biting your nails, feed whatever the tv commercials tell you. Cause its all a feel good thing.
