Chevy Transmissons????

I have a 05 Z-71 and it has 73k miles on it.How many miles do the trannies usually get before going bad?Thanks.

my 2002 z71 lost its sun gear at about 62k miles...

pretty quick on the ones i have saw. I've heard more complaints about z71 transmissions than any other vehicle.

HI GUYS,
I AM THE OWNER / OPERATOR OF RELIABLE TRANSMISSION
UNLESS ITS JUST A FLUKE DEAL, THOSE TRANSMISSIONS USUALLY LAST LONG PERIODS OF TIME. THE PROBLEM IS THAT HARDLY ANYONE EVER SERVICES THEIR TRANSMISSIONS FLUID AND FILTER. YOU SHOULD SERVICE EVERY 30000 MILES. I BET YOU SERVICE YOUR ENGINE EVERY 3000 OR SO. WHAT ABOUT THAT TRANSMISSION THAT HAS A FILTER AND FLUID ALSO. THE PROBLEM IS THAT ALL OF THER ELECTRONICS ARE INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION UNDER HOT FLUID. THE LONGER YOU GO THE LESS HEAT THAT FLUID DISSAPATES AND YOU WILL HAVE FAILURES. AS FOR THE SUN SHELL, WELL THATS ALL OF OUR FAULT. THE REASON THEY USUALLY BREAK IS BECAUSE WHEN YOU GO IN REVERSE TO BACK UP, HARDLY ANYONE COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP AND CHANGES GEARS TO FORWARD. YOU CAN'T HAVE TWO DIFFERENT GEAR SETS TRYING TO GO IN OPPESITE DIRECTIONS AT THE SAME TIME, SOMETHING WILL EVENTUALLY GIVE.

GO TO ANY DEALERSHIP AND ASK TO LOOK IN THEIR SERVICE MANUAL THEY USE TO REPAIR THAT INDIVIDUAL TRUCK AND U WILL SEE. I USE TO BE AN ASS SERVICE MANAGER AT A CHEVY DEALERSHIP FOR 7 YEARS. THE ONLY REASON YOUR OWNERS MANUAL SAYS THAT IS CAUSE THEY WOULD LIKE YOU TO HAVE TO TRADE IN OR BUY ONE OF THEIR REMAN TRANSMISSIONS. HEY THEY ARE IN THE MARKET TO SALE PARTS. ASK ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP IN YOUR AREA AND THEY WILL TELL YOU.

Knock on wood... its not doing anything wrong. Just got 99,200 miles on it and thought I might ot to get the fluid and filter changed on it.

Or leave it alone?

By the way... mines a Ford F150.

your ford will cost more money usually than that, depending on which transmission you have in it. ford uses two different types in f150

i would recomend you to service it. it will give you more miles if you do. transmission repair is getting higher these days. good luck

245000 miles 98 z71......and she aint babied and at the same time aint abused. costs me 109.99 to flush, and change fluid and filter.
cheaper to do that than to buy a transmission or make 5 years of payments, shes been a good one for me , but ive always kept her maintained too.

they go a long way if you keep up the service. hey if you hunt blue dogs you might be interested in the 2008 bboa oklahoma state championship in nov. i know its a long way but thought i might say something anyway. sometimes on faraway events like this, a group of hunting buddies will go together and split the expenses

I had a 2000 silverado, traded it at just under 100,000 miles. Trans was fine. I never even had it serviced while i had it. Fluid is good for 100,000 miles. I never towed anything though, so it depends on what it's been used for.

200,000 on my 1/2 ton 2WD. Serviced it at 150,000, and I am bout to get it done again. And mine has been ABUSED I am very rough on trucks. Last year I pulled a 14' trailer with a 15oo lb zero turn mower. My Dad's 3/4 ton had 225,000 on it when he traded and i drove it while I was in High school. I will drive nothing other than a Chevy. It is just my personal preference.

I have sold GMC trucks at the same dealership for over 15 years and the Z71 has nothing to do with your tranny. The Z71 is billistien gas shocks , a skid plate under the tranny, and the sticker on the side.
If you service these GM trans. and include a flush of the system, then use a 1/2 ton truck as a 1/2 ton not a 3/4 ton you should have any trouble .

A fourteen Foot Trailer, with a Lawn mower isnt abusing the truck.

I have had the same Chevy 1500, with V6 and Automatic, for 15 Years. Still has the same Engine, and Tranny in it.
And I have pulled a 30 horse Tractor with Bush Hog Behind it, other Vehicles with it. A Horse Trailer, with Hogs in it, and had it so loaded down with Firewood, the Shocks were bottomed out.
And I have never changed the Transmission Fluid.
Still runs great. Most of the time however, it has a Dog Box in the Back, and is just used for hunting.

ive got a 93 that i put thru heck....its got 140,000 on it and still runs fine.....the only thing ive done is put a new clutch in it

I have a 97 that had about 205,000 miles,before I had to replace it.Keep it serviced about every 25,000 miles,pulled alot of trailers w/ it for hay,tractors, and cows.

Chris the best way for to 100% guarantee that your transmission will tear up is sale it to me!!!!! Same goes for all the others with 200000 miles plus. I couldn't get in them and pull a Prince albert can full of Duck feathers before it would break.

That one kinda tickled me..LOL. It reminded me about a lady that came into a service station one time while I was there. She got out of her car & came over to where the mechanic & me were standing & said, "Is there anyway you can look at my rear end real quick? My husband told me to stop by here & let you take the plug out of my rear end & stick your finger in it to see if it's low. It's been making an awful noise.". But seriously, I've seen vehicles with high mileage of all different makes & models, drive in to a service station under their own power & get the auto trans. fluid & filter changed, & the vehicle wouldn't move out of it's tracks afterwards or would start slipping. Quite a few places here have a sign up that says they're not responsible for auto trans. failure by changing the fluid & filter. Most times on a vehicle with high mileage the mechanic will pull the dip stick on the auto trans., & if the fluid is dark colored & stinks, they advise not to change the fluid & filter because it has a good chance of causing the trans. to go out or start slipping. The mechanic said the thickness of the used auto trans. fluid in the high mileage vehicle was what effected the trans. & most times it has never been changed before. I've never really liked a auto trans. in any vehicle. I would much rather have a stick shift. Most times with them, you just put a clutch, pressure plate, & throw out bearing in them, at a much cheaper $, & start driving them again. My Dad always said people that didn't like stick shifts were just too lazy to change gears.
