Coldest Night You Have Hunted?

My first coon hunt was on a 9 degree night, dogs tracked and treed, that is when the sport bit me. Just curious the coldest weather y’all have hunted in and been successful? 10 here in Kentucky tonight, got the hankering to go.

Treed 6 at -10 last night

+5 back in the seventies. Our cold snaps usually don't last long and our coons usually wait it out. Most of the time our coon don't move much in the low twenties.

I talked a buddy of mine in to going hunting with me one night because I was having cabin fever. It was so cold that it felt like my toes were breaking off as I walked with insulated Mucks on . Made 1 drop, the dog went a mile in there and set down treed. I told that buddy of mine that I would walk in to this den and be back in a few but he went with me anyhow with it being as cold as it was in case something happened, got to my dogs tree and told my buddy you got to be joking, she was on a tree about as big as my arm and had the coon. Needless to say ,made that drop and went to the house.

Adak Alaska

While in the Marines I did some cold weather training there in February of 1987. As a training exercise we hunted each other. Lol. It was the worst cold I had ever been in. Now if it’s below 30 I don’t go out.

Cabin fever usually has a negative affect on my better judgement. I have hunted during some extreme below zero temperatures. I have actually had my hard hat freeze to my hair to the point it had to be thawed to get the hat off.

Around 25 years ago opening nite in Iowa -2 degrees with a wind chill around -20.Made two den trees, second den could see coon thru a crack in tree, could also see steam coming off coon or his breath. It was neat but after that headed for the truck!

Was it cold that night Robbie? I can't remember.. I don't think there was any snow on the ground if I remember.. but that doesn't mean anything... it sure could have been cold but that doesn't stick out on my mind.. I just remember old Bozz dropped in deep one direction and he had one and my old Luke dog went the other way and treed a den.. seemed like we made a blank or two that night as well... It probably was cold because now that I am remembering we didn't do real good at finding many coons that night... Lol.. one thing we do accomplish was run that poor ole boy out of the saddle.. 😂😂

It was ice on the roads. When we went to bozzes tree it was snowing strait down and we treed one in a road culvert and went on top of the mountain twice. Yea but that ole boy was plenty warm I figure lol. When that turkey ran through the creek by the cabin got his feet wet and was trying to cross that frozen road and his feet kept sticking to it was the funniest part lol.

Finally, been waiting for somebody to say something. -10 is too cold for me and the dog.

Posted by rghnd123 on 01-04-2018 03:59 AM:

Cold

19 degrees one night dogs got in water and came back out with ice on their legs, tail, and belly. The water wasn't frozen but if they had treed I wasn't going to them. Never treed a coon. I don't hunt in that kind of cold often. Went to Illinois the week of Christmas, had intentions to hunt. It was definitely to cold for me.

Usually if it's below 20 at dark I stay in here in Virginia. Usually we will get a cold snap which will last for a week or two then it will warm back up into something above freezing in the daytime. I have found that if the weather changes considerably overnight, it takes the coons a couple of days to move again. If it stays cold, they don't pay much attention to it but I sure do. I have hunted when it was in the single digits but I promised myself never again!

The last 3 weeks though have been unseasonably cold here. I have been hunting some with decent luck despite the cold. We went a couple of nights last week when it stayed in the teens. The first night it was around 15* and Swag treed a coon. We went another night and he went a little over 3 miles and never barked but it was a little windy.

I usually stay away from big water if I can help it on these cold nights. The rivers are frozen over here but not thick enough for something to walk on. Better safe than sorry.

Warmed up enough here today to get hit with what they're calling a weather bomb. Hurricane force winds and 12-18 inches of snow. The plows will never keep up once it gets rolling good they say to expect 4-6 foot drifts with zero visibility.

I really don't know how you guys handle such weather conditions! Just the thought of that much snow and extreme cold makes me cringe. Hope you guys the best. Dave

I'll pass thanks lol. We hunted up til two weeks ago. Our
coons ppretty much den up solid here for a month or two and most of them den in the ground or old buildings so you don't even get to listen to dogs tree on dens. They'll move here when the rut starts don't matter the weather or snow.

Dave you've never lived til ya tried leading a couple crazy dogs thru a thicket on snowshoes lol

It was 5 degrees last night when I cut loose. Treed a slick and a coon but covered some ground to do it. Its just part of hunting in Iowa. Winter can be rough but a fella can only take not having a hound loose for so long. LOL I have hunted in worse but definitely hunted in better. We are going back to the winter classic so if I wait for the weather to break before I get a dog ready for that hunt I will be reading about the winners of it in the bloodlines mag. Thank the lord for the heater in the truck, a good garmin and a dog that will go do what it's supposed to do.

Trying

Trying to hunt this arctic blast but dog can’t seem to finish, not enough brains and nose I guess

Me and Shawn Gillespie got up one and went morning when it was straight up zero.

But it was during the rut and had been unseasonably cold for several days.

My old Blue bitch treed a big boar just after daylight.

It was miserable.
